How Kendrick Lamar Used Cultural Hatred to Teach Self Love

  • I’ve wanted to make a video about To Pimp a Butterfly for a while now. I mean, shouldn’t every video essay channel make a video about this album at some point?
I couldn’t muster up the courage to try and tackle it... so I refrained from even writing about the album for years. But there’s something that I feel like rarely gets addressed with this project, and that’s relationships.
To Pimp a Butterfly is complex and layered and hard to wrap up simply, but it really does ultimately boil down to relationships between different parties of people and the factors that influence each individual’s approach to them, whether those reasons are for better or for worse. I settled on starting what will end up being a video series on To Pimp a Butterfly, where I’ll examine these relationships and the statement that this narrative makes about them, and how we can see out positive growth in our own lives.
But first and foremost, we have to settle our self hatred.
And trust me I get it… it’s not easy. Loving u is complicated.
What do you think of this record? Let's talk about it in the comments!
Thanks so much for watching. Every subscriber/viewer means a lot to me, and I appreciate every like and comment. Let me know what you think about the video or the album and I'd love to have a discussion in the comments! Music is meant to be discussed to assimilate ideas and to grow as people.

I am a Christian and student and I made this channel when I was in high school. I started this channel because I love talking about music (specifically hip hop) and given that the genre seems to be going downhill, I want to be part of the community that preserves the expectation of great music and dissecting what makes a beautiful record. Dealing with a lack of friends to discuss these matters with, I hoped to start my own community that loves music just as I do, as well as to provide a unique perspective as a follower of Christ that also appreciates this community. I appreciate everyone who watches and I am truly happy to see anybody comment their thoughts on a project I talk about.
Put "EVERYBODY LACK CONFIDENCE" as your comment if you read the description!
As always, thank you very much for watching and taking time out of your day to discuss music with me, God bless. Isaiah 55:8-12

Another aspect that doesn't get talked about nearly enough is how Kendrick portrays his psychology in this album and connects his political commentary while also self-analyzing his own psychology.
The way Kendrick constructed the tracklist and songwriting makes it so as we see his progression in thinking he's untouchable, to hating himself, to reflecting on life, humbling himself, and accepting himself, it makes it so even if we don't relate to his situation, we can understand how his mind is processing this and how we got from point A to point B. This is why this is currently my favorite rap album of all time.

Just wanted to add onto your reading of the track “Momma”, Kendrick isn’t talking to himself in the third verse, not physically but in his own mind he may see himself, but during the tracks momma and how much a dollar cost, Kendrick is in Africa. Explaining the “Kendrick you DO know my language you just forgot because of what public schools had painted” line in momma and the “Indigenous African only spoke Zulu” line in Dollar Cost. And the title of “momma” is referring to The Mother Land, Africa. This trip to Africa was a wake up moment to Kendrick, the fictional conversation he has with the little boy let’s him know that he doesn’t feel Kendrick’s impact on music “Oh I forgot ‘Don’t kill my vibe’ that’s right you’re famous, i used to watch on channel 5 tv was taken” Kendrick hasn’t changed all he thought he has changed, this little boy he feels related to is going through all the turmoil Kendrick went through, and Kendrick realizes he can’t put the weight of changing the world on his music alone, he needs to “be an advocate and tell your homies especially to come back Home” He hates himself in “u” because he feels that he wanted to be a leader of change through his music, while simultaneously ignoring his friends and family back in Compton, then realizes by going to Africa that the music isn’t the change, it’s being an advocate and activist. Which is why he doesn’t solve the audience fight and become a leader in the song “i” through music, but through a speech educating on the history of the n-word through the lens of African History. I think your videos on Kendrick’s music are great, just wanted to add to your understanding of the tracks

This album helped accept myself. The good the bad past accomplishments past mistakes everything is what makes me who I am. The parallel between u and I is what really made love myself and forgive myself for my mistakes. This album is sent from heaven

you probably made zero money from this video because of how much music you used and you are a saint for that cause you probably knew that going in. im halfway through and this video already made me cry a bit. u is such a powerful song its ridiculous. i dont think i can think of a single song that feels more emotionally powerful to me.

No disrespect but you definitely miss the mark on “for free” It was about how his ancestors pick cotton to build American and now his hard work isn’t for free like his ancestors work was for. Nothing to do with bragging or ego trip

This is a great perspective, and one I have not been enlightened on before! You are right, I am ignorant to those dynamics in TPAB. I tried as hard as I could not to overstep that boundary, assuming I would likely fail pretty badly. I hope you can forgive my insensitivity to these racial injustices I cannot relate to!

My boiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!! Great job on the vid dude! Would you ever do a vid on Denzel Curry's Melt? Or better yet, Danny Brown's recent release, Quaranta? Both albums have a wealth of meaning and depth that I think you could make a vid on?
