When I was 13 years old and my parents gave me my first darkroom setup, the small local library had two books by Andreas Feininger, on how to process B&W film and how to print and process the prints. My hobby turned into a 24 year career in professional photo labs. G-d bless the soul of Andreas Feininger.
Decades later I was walking through an international photography exhibit in Santa Monica, CA. Nothing appealed to me much, until I saw two small B&W prints of 1940s New York City. I looked closer and both shots were by Feininger. Their appeal to me could not be accidental.

This to me is the greatest of these programs.
And that is high praise, because this series is probably the greatest filmed portraits of great photographers ever.

I am an amateur photographer; just stating a fact. I learn a great deal about photography by studying the work of masters, but seeing these videos gives me so much more to think about, listening to the philosophy and creative dynamics of making pictures. Most important in this video for me were two items: 1) Taking a picture is not always about pleasing the public, and 2) If a person cannot understand a picture, that is not a critical element of the relationship between the photographer and the viewer.

I think the number one rule I should follow as a photographer, is how to push reality and the surreal into the photographer, and the viewer. If the picture doesn’t have that element to it, it’s off. That’s why macro and up close photography can be so effective. It pushes things we usually take for granted into the forefront.

This was such a delight to watch at 3 a.m. What masterpieces he took- & all in black & white. @ 15:46 you suddenly realize what an amazing photographer you are actually watching. For him to explain his pieces, priceless. I am in love with his style of photography.
He captures forms so beautifully. Saving this one in my favorites. I am going to go look this man's work up. He is a true master.

I admire Feininger's thoughtful approach to his work and his philosophy. It got interesting from the 20:00 mark onward and Feininger's response was priceless. Great insight into the mind of this photographer!

It was too expensive for me, so I built my own camera. What??? Feininger is on a totally different level.

    So seldom seen today.
Mr Feininger could make phtographes without photoshop.
No miracle, just being a master of photography.

I don’t understand the anti photoshop comments, and I don’t even use it. What’s the difference? It’s a manipulative tool, just like anything else in art.

    • @jacovanlith5082
      @jacovanlith5082 2 ปีที่แล้ว

No anti feelings on photoshop have been expressed.
To see any difference between grain and noise it can
be an advantage being an old analogue photographer.

Perhaps on a much more limited scale I share with Andreas Feininger the appreciation of how biochemistry and embryology effect the morphology of animals. Truly fascinating.

He meant to ask is he taking multiple exposures and layering them for a certain focal effect. High Feininger didn’t do, but others did.
