The beatitude, “The ‘meek’ shall inherit the world”, in the original Greek, is supposed to embody this, but English doesn’t have any one word that conveys it well. “Those who know that they have no enemies shall inherit the world”, is the best version I can think of. “Meekness” is something you choose to do, not having something is something you realize.
@@russdykes6446yeah, writers can struggle with knowing how their work will be received despite their personal thoughts on their own work A writer might believe something they think is genius will not be entertaining or eye catching to others (and vice versa) I’m assuming he wasn’t sure if others would find the line corny or not, but the line obviously wasn’t as it is a good ideal that fits the themes of the story perfectly
Personally, I use Shinji's infamous "I mustn't run away" quote from Evangelion to ease my nerves for speaking to a crowd lol I do use "I have no enemies" for a lot of other situations and it really has helped a lot, Vinland Saga is a very important story for young adults.
I personally believe the priest talking about love was more interesting. Because it’s true, we take and take and take and only start giving when we can take no more and become a part of the world that gives nonstop.
Gundam SEED being one of the first shows I actually understood as a kid rather than just seeing cool flying robots, "I have no enemies" or the equivalent somewhat shaped my outlook towards life.
it speaks a lot to how strong Yukimura's writing and Thorfinn's character is that not even all of its readers or viewers, in the comfort of their own homes living way easier lives, can even fully grasp or just straight-up misunderstand so simple yet profound a point Thorfinn came to. It's so easy for some to screw-up that quote and mindset or to twist it to their own benefit, but Thorfinn and Thors had it on lock
Just never take it too literally… I had a friend who just love this quote cuz he was a pacifist and all that, saying how he has no enemies but in reality he was just scared of violence and getting hit which I don’t shame him for. Just remember that even if you don’t have enemies in the moment, now, or even tomorrow, just know that there are those out there who would make enemies out of you and would try to take you down even if it were for no apparent reason. So never sell yourself short. Work and dream up and good life and always take care of yourself. Remember that being able to handle violence is a skill so even if your not interested in martial arts or brawling in general, it’s always good to pick up that skill especially since to world is filled with chaos and literally anything could happen even in the most peaceful neighborhoods.
I think it should be taken more as a "I might be the enemy to someone, but I have no enemy" so no one should resort to violence, unless it is the last resort against someone who thinks of you as an enemy. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to fight or you should just get abused, but that violence is not always the answer.
It's not surprising that Western audience resonate to this quote since their root is founded on Christian principles. For example, "Love your Enemies", which is said by Jesus Christ. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. -Matthew 5:44 With this I see hope for the West going back to the teachings of Christ. God bless you

I like it because it's naive. Naivety is a privilege. Most of us wish we lived in a world where we could be naive. Sadly, getting beat tf up or dltd isn't nearly as fun as the anime makes it out to be.
Thorfinn has this mindset and has this quote after going through a childhood filled with nothing but violence and personal anguish. There's nothing "naive" about wanting to embody kindness. Calling it "naive" just shows you refuse to give up hating others unreasonably, especially when I doubt you've gone through as much as Thorfinn has; the conclusion he came to ought to be way easier for you to realize as well, I doubt you had as traumatic a life as he has lol
I know the reason why westerners love the quote becoz they are rooted from Judeo Christian Values and Tradition, "I have no Enemies" almost the same as "turning the other cheek around."

That was actually a very good public speaking tip. Definitely making a mental note of that.
