      I think a followup is in order! The new firmware really woke up focusing (increase g movie focus/tracking settings.) I tried a Z7 because I liked the Z50 so much, but ended up staying with the Z50 and my D500. I'd much prefer having the 24-200 (back-ordered) or 24-105 (not out yet) over the 50-250 even on the Z50. I just wish I could assign spot focus directly to a function button, it took en-el15 batteries, and had a CFExpress/SD slot. One slot is still okay if it takes both.

    • @sloppyjoe9156

      @@EP-pg3xs the sensor is basically the same as the D500. Depending on the work you can use any camera for anything. Lots of professional sports and wildlife shooters prefer aps-C cameras because of the extra range in smaller or similar sized bodies. There's mental adjustments to be made and good lenses are important but the most important thing is knowing what image you want and how to get it. You may need sightly slower shutter speeds or higher ISOs for example than on a full frame camera if you want a specific composition. You may need to get closer or use a longer lens if you want a shallow depth of field. My understanding of what makes pro cameras pro is generally usability features (focus joysticks, dual memory card slots, faster/more robust memory formats like XQD or CF Express, extremely high MP counts in some cases which you don't need unless you're making giant gallery sized prints. I'm not a professional (I shoot events and indoor sports for my University's newspaper) and have been using an aps-c camera for that. I know this was a bit rambling but basically if your camera has all the basics covered (good handling, shoots enough FPS for your purposes, the image quality is up to your standards, the ISO performance is up to your standards and is 20ish megapixels or above it should be fine for whatever you're doing. Most professionals spend more because their gear is being used frequently enough that those quality of life features will make them money (not losing shots because of a corrupted memory card, being able to crop in on a high MP capture, more flexibility in shooting when using a full frame sensor etc. The extra price isn't as big a deal because it's an investment.

    Great review, very detailed and fair. Most of the larger TH-cam channels wrote this camera off at announcement without using it, and others took it out of the box and did no prep at all and made it look terrible. I'm really curious how it does at your weddings, personally I don't think APSC cameras work well at weddings, nor do f4 zooms. I have always shot primes, and 2.8 zooms, which the z 24-70 2.8 is the best 2.8 zoom I have used to date. But for me the sweet spot are the z 1.8 primes, they are sharp wide open and have a nice balance of size and weight compared to the 1.2 or 1.4 primes. Although the z50 with the 85mm 1.8 prime seems like it could do some serious work, that would be a 130mm f/2.8.

    • @carjac820
      @carjac820 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might not work for you but I've seen some wedding photographers using an entry-level cameras as a secondary camera from their mid-range apsc ones. And yes, I've been shooting weddings with apsc cameras, wedding photographer Taylor Jackson also uses a D500 in some wedding shoots which is a crop-sensor camera. I think the Z50 can handle it well since I heard that the iso capability of the camera is a beast.

  • @jacobl6572

    It's physics, you will can better subject separation with full frame using the same lens and framing the subject the same. What I would do is shoot with the background farther back if possible if I wanted more separation so even a cropped sensor can look great. The physics of a smaller sensor also forces you to use more magnification for any given photo output size, thus more magnifying any imperfections in the shot.

    I sold my D610 and all my F mount glass and picked up a Z50 with both the kit lenses. No regrets at this point. The weight savings alone made it worth it. Just wish there were a few more (faster) DX Z mount lenses and really hoping that 200-600 on the “road map” has some sort of lens stabilization.
    One small gripe.... the focal length doesn’t change. A 50 is a 50 no matter if it’s on a DX, FX ,medium format or whatever format . The field of view changes, but not the focal length.

    Hi Will...
    A very nice video on the Z50 which was very helpful!!
    I understand why you feel it's best to use the lenses made for the Z cameras with one of the reasons being it keeps the camera compact and easier to carry than using the adapter and a FX lens.
    I think eventually most people are going to have to decide if they should make the switch and go all mirrorless or maintain two systems - DSLR and mirrorless.
    I think for the professionals the decision will be easier to make than the consumer.
    For me I will most likely have to have two systems ( which I'm not thrilled with) because I need to have a back up camera and I don't see the benefit of having two Z50s so I'll keep my D7100 and DX lenses and have the Z50 and kit lens.
    Best wishes
    Duane

    Really looking forward to the 40mm pancake lens will be amazing with the z50, but Nikon need to release an ultra wide zoom and maybe a dx prime to make me want to buy a z50. The S lenses are great but just too expensive, I can't afford a z6 hence liking a z50 but the lens choice is pretty limited (yes can adapt but I like the compactness).

    My Z50’s EVF/monitor also displays slightly underexposed. What I did was assign Fn1 button to “preview” ... when I press it, it will show me the properly exposed image. So I think that’s something Nikon needs to fix because with the slight underexposure display, it’s certainly not WYSIWYG.
    Keep pumping out that awesome work of yours! Love your “down-to-earth” style and choice of topic coverages.

      I can definitely speak intelligently on this topic as my previous cameras were 800 series nikons. You will definitely want to be looking at the Z6. The Z50 is great but the Z6 is in another class in-terms of dynamic range, ergonomics and lens selection. Adapted 3rd party lenses also work better with the FTZ adapter on the Z6.
      The Z series will completely change your ideas about what was possible with photography, they are an absolute joy to use. Feel free to reach out with any questions any time!

      You would loose a lot on the wider range with a crop sensor with your lenses and the ISO performance would be not as good. For subject isolation, full frame is always better using the same lens, framing the subject the same, opened up to the larger f stop. I would definitely go with the Z6.

    @WhittyPics 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The size of the sensor has nothing to do with the Boken. A FX camera just forces you in closer to get the same image size on the image which makes it appear you have less DOF. It is your lens that creates the boken, not the camera. Those kit lenses appear to have a plastic mount. I have to wonder about the durability of a plastic mount?

    Still not convinced for serious usage. What lenses to use for a 35mm +85mm combo to replace D700 +35F2D + 85/1.8G? Last time I checked, you need a DX 24mm F1.4 and DX 58mm F1.2 lens for the same depth of field effect. The former is called AFS 24mm F1.4 G for $1700 and the later is Noct 58mm F1.2 second hand copy for $3500 if you are lucky.

    Greetings from Japan Will,
    I have been trying to decide between getting Fuji x100v or the Nikon Z50. I am working on improving my B&W Photography works (as a serious enthusiast) and have been looking for the best equipment to handle micro-contrast and overall Tonal Contrasts handling. My Olympus EM1 mark ii works well for my Color Macro shooting but only okay for BNW.
    A couple of questions for you on the Z50:
    1. If I get the Nikon Z 50mm f1.8S lens, can I attach it directly to the Z50...or do I need to use the FTZ adapter to attach it? I realize that the 50mm becomes 75mm equivalent and I'm great with that for BNW Candid Street shooting which I like to do!
    2. Is the kit 16-50 lens sufficient for daytime BNW Photography?? I'm concerned about the variable aperature ranges
    3. Does Sigma produce lenses that will fit the Z50 lens mount without that FTZ adapter?
    Awaiting your informed input,

(sorry to all Fujifilm fans, but it just wasn't for me) I've had a camera like the Z50 in my head as a dream for the longest time, portable, have on me all the time, fairly priced...it really fills a niche market and love that Nikon released it! Your point about the lag really put me off though, I shoot portraits and sports for work, need something super dependable.

    Hi William. I came across an issue with my Z6, which seems to be a minor fix for Nikon. I had auto-area AF on and eye AF on. If the camera decides to focus on any unwanted subject, i can press ok button which displays a white box in the middle and i can point that box to my subject and focus again (back button AF or half shutter), and then it starts tracking my subject, but it stops tracking eye. i have to restart camera, or switch modes or switch AF modes to get eye AF working again. Would you please test that and report this issue if it is an issue, or do you have any workarounds?

      Hey buddy,
      I’m traveling out of state right now and don’t have my Z6 with me. I do have my Z50 though. If you have pressed the OK button and brought up the white tracking box, all you have to do is hit the zoom out button (magnifying glass) and that will reset auto area with face tracking. This is how it works on the Z50 at least. Let me know if this works for you

      Get the FTZ adapter for $49 and you can use any lens you want. This is no "cheap body" and it deserves better glass, it will grow with you, unless size/weight is a concern. Even if you didn't want the kit lenses, getting the full kit with FTZ adapter, and selling them you'll still come out ahead. Also, better glass doesn't depreciate nearly as much as the kit lenses do. Check out ebay prices of older kit lenses versus 1.8 and 1.4 primes.
