For me one of the greatest musicians, in any genre!
Was fortunate to be present during this concert. Ustad ji perhaps played Raga Alhaiya Bilawal also before concluding his recital with Bhairavi. Memorable moments!
I know nothing about classical music & ragas, but listening to this it feels flawless , absolute completeness.
the way this legendary ustaad amjad ali ji coordinates with his musicians is exceptionally amazing. Needless to say that he is the finest sarod player. I was fortunate to listen to him live at least three times so far.

While listening to his soul soothing melodies - one feel like blooming inside to the core of one's heart and soul. I first listen to Sarod Vadan way back around 1982 in Mumbai in a morning programme of BBC Hindi service presented perhaps by a wonderful BBC Hindi service member Mamta Gupta. Her 2-3 minutes presentation made me a fan of Sarod Vadan. It was Rag Bhairavi and the player too was Shri Amjad Ali Khan Saheb. That recording is still somewhere in my old cassettes. Great performance by Amjad Ali ji which still often echoes in my ears giving the same pleasure. Ravindra K Kapoor

Amjad Ali is always great to his performance .
Amjad in Arabic means "the most glorious" and Mr Amjad here plays the most glorious music we can listen to ,it invokes the glory of creative spirit that Allah has bestowed on his servants ,we just keep silent and let the tunes float in the air and through the hearts of listeners .May Allah bless you Mr Amjad.

A unique rendition
I have listened to Bhairavi sung. and played by many eminent artists, but in instrumental, none like Pandit Ravi Shankar, and in vocal, none like Pandit Omkarnarhji Thakur !

All are great but melody in Sarod of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is just amazing. Even uninitiated enjoy throughout. Comparison is not desirable in fine arts. Each one has his/her own place.

Bhairavi can be played anytime. Usually it is played as a concluding piece of a concert.
It's a morning raga.. earlier most live concerts lasted till the morning...hence it became a practice to end with bhairavi in the day light...its definitely a morning raga :-)
No tanpura, amjad khan sahib is playing more like a dhoon....Jean-Luc V says it is like bayati in Arabic music...cld someone give a more enlightened review of this composition pl?

Amjad ji is one of the greatest exponents of sarod of today in India. He belongs to the bangas gharana, and he received his tutelage under his father ustaad Hafij Ali Khan who was also a maestro of this beautiful instruments.
