Pressure Compensated Flow Control Valves in a Load Sense System

  • Along with the shuttle valves, another critical piece in every Load Sense system is the pressure compensated flow control valves (also known as pressure compensator valves) in the valve section. These valves serve an important role in controlling the rate of flow through the directional valves, so that even as the pump changes its flow rate (due to the load sense signal), the flow to the actuators remains constant.     A heartful thanks to your videos. I believe this video shows about the pre comp system and not sure how this flow controlled evenly with heavy and light load.

    Isnt the compensator moving the wrong way in this simulation? It moves from from center to the left, shouldnt it move to the right?

      A load sensing, directional valve bank, complete with pressure compensators in each valve section is very common on a road grader or an excavator.

    Ok it is a good animation to get the idea for pressure compensation system but i have one question that how flow equally distributed to both sections as we know that flow always find low resistance path now if we move both valves in all over above or down position then surely in your example the more or even all pump's flow will move to second section which have 16000 lbs load which is resistance.???

      That is where the pressure compensator comes into play. It will close accordingly thereby restricting the flow to the load .

      In this animation, it is not clear how pressure compensator is restricting pressure in second half section. With my current understanding, it is logical that all the flow must transfer to the 2nd section due to less resistance.

    These vids are great. I’m trying to find out a name/explanation for a system where your source flow would be 10gpm. You would want all of that 10gpm to be supplied to a circuit, until another circle calls for 5gpm of that flow. This would in turn operate both circuits at the same time, tho both would be operating at 5gpm while that one circuit is active and full flow restored once its inactive.

      @@aidwilli thanks! I’ve looked into those, but it seems like it splits the incoming flow even when one of the systems is at rest. I’m trying to rob partial flow from the incoming flow, but yet when that system is at rest, I’d want 100% flow to provide the other system.

      @@BrendonVorio you could try a power steering priority valve. Flow is sent to excess flow port at only ~ 150 to 250psi drop when controlled flow port is blocked. Try searching Eaton vle type in line priority valve for an example. You can pull one off of a tractor or other mobile hydraulic machine if you can verify valve gpm rating is enough.

    Great work!!! I have only one question. So if you have only one load in your circuit, you don't need a pressure compensator, right? Just the load sensing pump is enough to ensure a constant deltap across the directional valve??
