- www.ascap.com Rodriguez was the greatest 70s U.S. rock icon that never became famous - except in South Africa. The 2012 Sundance documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, tells the incredible story of Rodriguez and two fans who tracked him down in Detroit to raise him out of obscurity. On Monday, January 23rd, Rodriguez performed at the Sundance ASCAP Music Café. He and the director of his film, Malik Bendjelloul, spoke to ASCAP's Erik Philbrook after Rodriguez's standing room only performance.

if anyone deserves to perform in front of an audience of millions its this guy
Im so glad someone took the effort to track down this wonderful and talented artist, and reintroduce him to the world.. What a great sound.
I'm so happy that after all this time Rodriguez finally knows how loved he truly is! I just saw Searching For Sugar Man in Miami last night, and it was life changing. So so so good!!
There's sumtin when he sings the words 'sugar man' the first time that makes my inner and outer body jolt..
The real deal. A man with great talent and humility. Hope he keeps recording.
I saw him April 16 in Los Angeles. Great voice and awesome music. If you get a chance to see him live, go for it.
Fantastic to see Rodriguez getting recognition for his brilliance, finally. I Knew every word and still love his music. Well done on the documentary I hope it comes to Vancouver Canada I can't wait to see it.
On a personal note great to see Steven Sigerman, and old friend of mine, who brought Rodriguez out to South Africa, to do a concert recently.
Omg, I wish this man the most wonderful last years of his life. Still a wonderful voice and great songwriter.
Good God this is so good! I can't wait for the documentary, "Searching For Sugar Man".
I won't say he's better than anyone, that would diminish who he is. He is Sixto Rodriquez. A category unto himself. Comparisons diminish the artist. Why do we, as humans have to put an elitist twist on it? He is Sixto Rodriguez! Awesome!
70 years old!!! amazing!
He doesn't need a band.. He is one
Finally your been recognized my Latin Brother for such amazing Talent and humility, you deserve it, enjoy it. Blessing Sugar Man Rodriguez>
My musical hero indeed.
Rodriguez!! I hope he get his zillions of dollars this man deserves it. :-D
Much respect to Sixto Rodriguez, a musical genre on his own!
"As famous as who.?" LMAO. Mr Rodriguez I want to thank you for the wonderful gift of music. Keep on ROCKING my brother.
best song!!!
"...and about love: don't be a silent partner." Brilliant.
The secret of life at 3:42.
South Africa:"Lets tell em abt the secret Its Sixto Rodriguez"
Rest of the world:"Holy MOFUS! ! ! "
I've seen this movie, and it say's A&M Records on his albums. A&M is now owned by Universal Music. The largest Music company in the world! I hope Rodriguez can get some or all of his Royalties for the sales of his 2 albums. The Soundtrack is on Sony. It would be great if Columbia Records/Sony sign Rodriguez to do a brand new album/CD. They would then have Bob Dylan & Rodriguez both on the same label.
Everyone knows that the 60s started in 1965 and finished in 1976.
this dude makes Santana sound like a car salesman.
I am guessing that you have never had a friend whose life was destroyed by drugs nor had a family of friends whose children were neglected due to parents who used drugs. When you do, you might be more understanding of those who do not glamourize drug use. There are some painful stories from those of us who have lost loved ones to drugs.
There's a big difference between de-scrip-tive and pre·scrip·tive.
Such a pity you dont know the whole story Garfield. You should have grown up in South Africa my man! :)
I think you`re wrong: it`s not drugs that produce criminal behaviour and anti social attitudes, it`s people who take drugs - and most of all society`s attitude towards drugs and drug use.
contrary to here in the US, many countries in europe have decriminalised drug use - and this has been shown to clearly benefit drug users
it might help to quit "holier-than-thou" thinking and the medieval attitudes (so typical of this country) and see the world as it is, before passing judgement on others.
Unlike Dylan, who was in an American Express ad, Rodriguez, after his new found fame, continues to remain uncompromising.
How many other Rodriguez's are out there?
You found a path, you walked it, it worked. I hope you are empathetic to people who are addicts, and I hope you don't scorn at the man with the spliff, there's a time and a place for everything. I'm sorry about your friends.
Yeah, great, just go all subtle like on TH-cam. Sure, that works all the time.
Awesome singer, fond memories of Cold Fact as a youngster. Shame about the patronizing French dude
swedish !!!!!
Would you care to provide examples of "many countries" in Europe that decriminalised drug use? Or elaborate what benefits to drug users this would bring (except the obvious one - a threat of criminal persecution.
Unfortunately, millions DO agree with him.
I grew up in the drug soaked 60's. I was there to see my friends in prison, bodies wrecked from illegal drug use. Minds destroyed by LSD. On and on. Only by the grace of God did Jesus deliver me from the clutches of drug addiction and the criminal behavior and anti social attitude it produces, as is evident by the druggies who have gone over the top to criticize my opinion. But fire away. At least I can articulate my clear headed thoughts without profanity.
better than rolling stones, was the best of the best in the world...
The 60s didn't destroy as many lives as WW1 and WW2.
Sugarman doesn't "celebrate" drugs either.
What drugs are YOU on?
The war on drugs here in the USA is a big fat joke. First of all because of the for PROFIT jails and the police departments around the country, love this "fight" because they get more money for the fight against drugs because it pays for their overtime and pensions. What this country needs is treatment centers, drug use is a disease just like alcoholism, these drug users need treatment not jail.
5 People voted this down??!!What idiots!! You try writing as good or amazing a song as this, and play and sing it when you are 71!!
The director needs to eat something, sit down and shut up. Annoying!
