Dew (mtn dew) - luxe (like the lux in luxury)
Mac (like big mac) - quarry (like where ore/lime etc is extracted from)
And as an aussie I've never heard of jimmy grants.
Rip curl I didn't know the background, but that's pretty awesome to learn.

Safeway Supermarkets were established in Australia with an Australian investor and the US Parent. They used to be in most east coast states until 1985 when Woolworths bought out the majority from US Safeway and decided to retain the Safeway brand in Victoria due to its dominance and popularity. The stores in the other states closed or rebranded back to Woolworths. Any remaining Woolworths that were in Victoria were eventually rebranded to Safeway except for Karingal which retained the only Woolworths Supermarket in Victoria!

As a long time coin collector, I can add some info on the Holey Dollar. At the time Spanish eight real coins (piece of eight) were virtually the universal trade coinage. Australia would get currency in that form from ships buying our goods for export (mostly wool and timber in those days), but the currency would soon disappear as merchants purchased imports from the ships as well. The value of the coin was 5 shillings in Australia but varied in the world. The solution was to take a batch of them and punch out the middle, thus creating 2 coins from one. The large holey piece was labeled 5 shillings and carried the same value as a complete one, and the center piece called a "dump" was valued at 1 shilling, As the Spanish real was valued due to its consistent weight in silver, the ship captains would not take the new lighter punched out coins, and thus the coins remained circulating in the country. Today both parts are considered very valuable in numismatic terms and many end up in museums. Current @ value of a Holey dollar is A$500,000.00 depending upon condition, stamp quality and rarity of the original Spanish coin it was produced from, and no, I do not have one dammit.

    G'day Ian,
writing this message about half an hour away from Torquay just down the coast. Torquay is pronounced the same as Torquay in England (also where Fawlty Towers is set too..) Torquay has a small shopping mall (of sorts) just of surfie stores. I used to go there during my teenage years to buy some sloppy surfie t-shirts.
Visy is related to Pratt Industries in the USA (same owner). Back in Sept. 2019 Pres. Trump and Aust. PM Scott Morrison both opened a new manufacturing plant / paper mill in Wapakoneta, Ohio, that created about 300 jobs. Visy in Oz and Pratt in the US both do cardboard packaging which is pretty important because many things you would buy come in a cardboard box.
I wonder how many other country American towns can lay claim to hosting two world leaders at the same time?

Woolworth's was everywhere when I was a younger, 70s & 80s. Their first successful store was in Lancaster, PA. They were very prevalent in PA. Pretty much every mall had one as one of their anchor stores. The one at the mall near where I grew up had a 2 level store with its own escalator connecting the 2 levels. A lot of towns had stand alone stores on their main streets. As a kid, my favorite sections in the store were the toy section, the pet sections (think guppies, parakeets and gerbils) and the music section. They eventually evolved into Footlocker which is a huge evolution of what they started as (5 and 10 department store) and still exists today.

Woolworths (along with their only main competitor, Coles) run a duopoly in the Australian supermarket sector.
Both place profits and shareholders above consumers. Both have shonky pricing practices. Price fixing and gouging is an ongoing issue.
The same with our domestic air travel. There are only two major players, Virgin and Qantas.
One thing the USA does very well is offer real competition across all sectors.

Woolworth's here in the U.S. was a major player in the 'dime store' or 'five & dime' store as they were referred to, like Kress's, Kresge's, Ben Franklin stores, etc. It evolved differently in AU, as a different type of store, and there it still is a big player in the 'big store' realm I believe.
And think it may still be at least partly held by the Woolworth family.

    • @K24Z3CU2

Kresge's started out Kmart in Australia along with Kmart Food in 1969 before it was bought out in the 80s by a company known as Coles-Myer. The Kmart brand is still alive and well in Australia and also exists in New Zealand. They are extremely popular and most stores are hyper market sized and are 24 hours too however they no longer stock food. It's mainly a department store similar to Target Australia (same name and logo, no connection to US Target)
