  • Took the Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Paya Thai BTS station in downtown Bangkok. You get a nice view of the city when you arrive by train.
    A one way ticket is just 45 THB, the total track is 28,4 km (17,6 miles). There are 8 stations and it takes about 30 minutes.

    I love that airport link train. I get off at Makkasan and it cost me around 40 baht and it is so much faster than a taxi on the roads. Connect at Makkasan to the MRT and 3 stops later for another 15 baht I am directly under my condo building at Huai Khwang. The same distance by taxi from my home to the airport in Australia costs me the equivalent of around 1800 baht.

I'll be getting off at Ratchaprarop and then possibly walk 800m (presumably very manageable) to my accommodation or to take metered taxi or Tuk-Tuk if there are any at the station. This is a remarkably fast journey from the airport into the city itself - where I stay in South Africa you could bargain on hours to get to the airport.

    I always love making this journey, and look forward to taking it next year. In reality though, it probably never should have been built. Thaksin had his fingers in the move from Don Muang & his sister made millions on the land purchases, that were doubtless purchased on the sly a few yrs before. Don Muang could have had a fast train to Hua Lamphong, and later Bang Sue would have worked well also. I remember arriving at Don Muang in 2004. The face cameras were a bit intimidating. You were at a raised level & descended down steps I think. And then later on, Don Muang was used again for commercial flights, as the airline slots became more expensive at Suvarnabhumi. That said, I love it now.

    So I understand that both the BTS and MRT lines are expanding like crazy, but does the government subsidize them in building all of the infrastructure? I know some buildings and malls help, but is that for part of the cost of the station or also for part of the cost of the rail line? Do they go through normal condemnation procedures in acquiring the right-of-ways and widening of the streets?

    • @Sebernica
      @Sebernica 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      3 types of trains, BTS (Sky Train), MRT (some underground & some sky train), ARL (Airport Sky Train)...... For MRT, government takes care of everything. BTS is a little complicated. BTS consists of 3 sections. 1. Middle Section (Original, Mo Chit - Onnut). 2. Southern Extension (Onnut - Samutprakarn). 3. Northern Section (Mo Chit - Khu Khot). The Original section (middle), first operated in 1999. BTS Company handled everything (Construction, Purchasing Trains, Installing given signal system, implementing ticketing system, overseeing entire operation). City of Bangkok gave 30 years contract to BTS (1999 - 2029)..... Whereas northern & southern extensions, City of BKK handled construction, but BTS handle the rest (train, ticketing, given signal system, operation). Last year, City of BKK quietly planed to extend BTS contract for another 30 years!!!; which plays in to BTS hand, cuz BTS simply gets contract renewal and doesn't have to compete with others bidders. BTS claimed that they have to raise the price to 158 baht (full length ride), However, the previous agreement, the fare was capped at 65 bath. So, the government stepped in and hold off the negotiation. They're working in bring the numbers down from 158 to 104 baht. (They removed the crazy entry fee, around 15 baht "per each section"; meaning patron will only pay one time entry fee). BTS was kinda like "Oh yeah, that's negotiable if City of BKK is willing to extend the contract for anther 30 years") ..... (((WTF!!!))).. P.S. Without 30 years contract extension, City of BKK has to pay off the debt that they owe BTS from the original contract (middle section), in order to keep the fare low. ....In my opinion, City of BKK shouldn't have extended another 30 years contract. City of BKK should've let the contract expired. Then, arrange a fair auction. Let other companies join the bidding process. Another option, is to do just like the government does with MRT (government runs the show in everything; construction, train, ticketing, given signal system, operation). Due to ongoing disagreement in fare-cap, as of today, the patrons can ride northern extension "for free" until unknown date. The downfall is, as days go by, City of BKK owes more money to BTS, cuz BTS is a private entity. They definitely won't let anybody ride the trains for free, They will go after City of BKK in the future, for sure. FYI, BKK metro system is the most expensive metro system "IN THE WORLD", by per km & by comparing to the minimum wage.

    • @aging1847
      @aging1847 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Sebernica Thank you for the interesting and detailed explanation. I don’t doubt the transit system in Bangkok is hugely expensive, but given the massive traffic jams the city used to experience, I assume the government had to figure out solutions to efficiently moving millions of people around each day. The way I view it is, one generation always pays it forward to the next. Meaning, I never paid for the major highways built in my city that I use everyday, but I am currently paying for a now under construction mass transit system yet to be running. Seems like if a growing city doesn’t deal with how their people move around, people would want to move away, land values drop, you won’t see malls and great new restaurants opening up, so it’s a trade off. You guys did a great job cleaning up air pollution. I remember visiting back in the 1980’s with black smoke coming out of the buses.
      Do you know how Bangkok handles the compensation to land owners in the acquiring of land for these rail right of ways? In the US, after a decision where the rail will cut through, it figures out which pieces of land will be affected and then gets appraisers to value the land to pay to the land owners. This often happens in street widening where they have to pay all of the property owners for the land they are taking. So it’s a long process here. I know many of the rail lines there operate on already used streets, but wondering about new areas? Thank you again.

    • @Sebernica
      @Sebernica 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aging1847 I'm Thai, but I spend 50:50 of my time in both BKK and L.A., so I get what u mean. Problem with BKK trains system is the fare is so expensive, compare to the wages. Let's say construction workers earn minimum wage around 300 baht/day ($10 USD). The ticket fare, let's say 60 baht. If with connections, it'd be something like 150 baht or more. This is one-way only. If the patron needs a motorcycle taxi, that would be another 20 baht, add on. You can see that the daily wage doesn't cover the rides; let alone, food, rent, bills, etc... Basically, I don't think we can call BKK Metro system as "Mass Transit", cuz it's not available for all. It's available for those who earn 4X of the minimum wage. There're talks that government should subsidize the fare, just like how China does. I think that's not gonna happen......... For expropriation process, it's similar to the U.S. The government tend to send letters to the properties owners. If people in the neighborhood strongly object, they might arrange public hearing. Sometimes government decide to detour the route. But most of the times, the owners have to give in. Also, the owners usually receive the market value. ........... FYI, the real estates value in Thailand is skyrocketing (just like in Hong Kong). When there're news about the metro rail lines are going to pass through certain areas, The properties value on both side of the streets will shoot up, crazily. They should've done just like how Japan does. In Japan, if they plan to build the rails in certain areas, Japanese government would control the price of the properties on both side of the streets.

      @@Sebernica Thank you again. Yes, to visitors, the BTS and other lines are so cheap, but I am aware of the disparity amongst the regular Thai resident you point out. I agree that the government should step it and subsidize them because it only helps raise economic opportunities for those in that situation leading to a higher standard of living for everyone eventually. Regular unlimited ride bus passes here cost now $70/month and senior passes now $6/mo (used to be $40 for 2 years). People in one district of Bangkok could travel to other parts of Bangkok quickly to get to a job whereby they otherwise couldn’t get. More people working. More people spending money at a shopping place across town. No brainer.

    How easy is it to connect to BTS from that last stop? I heard that it only brings you fairly close; not like an integrated station.

      @@globaltravelmate that’s awesome! I’ve only ever gotten the train into the city once, during the day, and usually the convenience factor rules. But given the chaos during the day, this really is a solid choice.

    I'm astonished. 14k people watching a video showing a railway trip that actually is completely unused, since it connects a ghost airport to a dead city...

      All the travelers that would normally occupy these trains can only travel online now, through these kind of videos, unfortunately.

      I understand. I live in Bangkok, and it's so frustrating watching the best city of the world dying in the name of a total madness...
      Apart from the cheap propaganda of the authorities, we will probably see tourists again in 2023, but the question is what tourists will find here. Actually Thailand is a land of zombies driving motorcycles with mask and no helmets, where getting a beer in a bar or having a walk in a public parks is forbidden, but industries and 7/11 are open...
      I recommend Thailand lovers not to come here until back to normal (if this will ever happen); coming now may be a shock, but what's more it may turn out in a prison nightmare...
      Thanks for the good job you're doing.
