      Might want to do something about the first 8 minutes where the wife just smiles and nods in silence - perhaps a solo rules explanation would work better? Then also, since she is introduced as themes expert it might be nice to hear her talk about the theme and not just mechanics.

    Thank you so much for your videos on Wyrmspan, ladies. I think that for me, Wyrmspan is going to be the better game based on your input. For my husband, who is a pretty casual game, Wingspan (which I already own) is the better fit.

    This was a really great video, and having played both I agree with all 6 of the improvements, especially the Dragon Guild! I really enjoy how it adds another facet to the end-game victory points that's really visible!
    I had the pleasure of surprising a friend who has played truly HUNDREDS of games of Wingspan + expansions with playing + lending them this game, and she absolutely adores its changes.
    Improvement 7: If you've played hundreds of games of Wingspan, this gives you the chance to reexperience learning it! Starting over with a new puzzle!
    Around 17 minutes you discuss the cardboard elements, and I'm happy to say the deluxe components for this game are really nice! You get little sculpts of the milk + meat + gold ingots + crystals and the coins are marvellously metal and weighty! I'm really glad I picked them up at my local board game store's launch event.

    Great review (as always)! Really appreciate your ability to distill down and present the key/core aspects of the gameplay in a very articulate and systematic way. Your reviews seem very thorough and informative without being overly long. The differing perspectives and interplay between each of your thoughts keeps it engaging. This is definitely the best overview/review I've seen for the game!
    I don't own Wingspan but your review and the added crunchiness have me interested in looking into getting a copy of Wyrmspan. And thanks for highlighting the solo mode as well. I'm thinking about playing more solo just to be able to get to play more often than I would otherwise. Thanks for the energy and effort you put into your content!

      That is fair. I'm excited for it because my roommate has Wingspan, so I haven't been able to justify getting it but also don't feel comfortable playing his game solo or with others, so I'm so happy that Wyrmspan is coming out because I can justify getting it.

      There are so many board games out, that we can't play them all. No one has that much time. So even when games don't have direct comparables, they're still competing for the same time and space. It's great that some people will enjoy Wyrmspan, and it's also ok that people won't when it's not appealing to them, or their playgroup prefers other games in the same spot for any number of reasons.

    Great review!!! I played Wingspan and it was ok, but wouldn’t push to play it again. I like what they did thanks to your review of the six changes so that I want to play Wyrmspan. I must be more into fantasy because the real life pictures of birds was just uninteresting, but dragons, that’s cool.

  • @marsz17
    @marsz17 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Initially I wasn't really interested in this game, but after hearing your thoughts I might be into this! I got Wingspan for solo play mainly, but I felt like it relied a bit too much on luck for my liking, with the restricted availability of the bird cards and resources. It sounds like Wyrmspan has less luck with the resources, and more opportunities for variation with the caves and the guild. Also I'm a fantasy girlie who loves biology, so with the added booklet this is 100% my kind of theme.

However I love Wingspan a lots, love the birds and all the improvement you mentioned were never something that bothered me in the first place. Wingspan is our "after work during the week" game with my partner, just having a relax and fun satisfying play in 40 min. • @edoardopersichetti1320
    @edoardopersichetti1320 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great review as usual, thanks ladies! Here is me playing devil's advocate :)
    Part of what I liked about Wingspan was the theme integration with the real birds, and the little facts about them, their habitat etc. This seems all much less relevant here, since after all these "facts" about dragons, the caves etc. are all made up. The fact that they are not on cards, makes them possibly even less relevant (when on cards it's much easier to take a second and read, but having to go there on purpose...not sure how many players would care). On birdfeeder: I am one of the thinkers so generally I am all for removing randomness from games, but in this case it was quite smoothly integrated in the game mechanics, so I'm not sure. The cave cards definitely add a layer of complexity, I am wary this may make the game more clunky. For running the engine: yes, one of my biggest issues with Wingspan was the fact that sometimes an optimal engine "killed" the game by simply being too good and being run over and over again. I hope this small change fixes it. Not sure what to think about the coins, I thought it was nice to have the same number of actions for everyone, it was at least more "fair". And the Dragon guild again seems like an element intended to add a bit more complexity to it.
    Overall, I am more than a bit skeptical about this game - I am afraid that it'd be difficult to justify its purchase, and I can't see myself bringing it to the table. For example, even if it were to actually improve on Wingspan, by stepping into an upper tier of complexity, it then suddenly competes with other games with which it may struggle to compare, and that I'd rather bring to the table instead (Terraforming Mars, anyone?). Wingspan, on the other hand, while being far from perfect, was a nice little game that serves a purpose to bring new and "light" gamers to the table and familiarize with the idea of engine building.
    Still, thanks for this review - at least now I have a bit of a doubt, and I may end up at least trying it out. Keep up the good work and enjoy GenCon! I can't wait for it :)

    Thank you very much for this explanation of and thoughts on the game.
    I love Wingspan a lot, one of my favorite games for sure, and I play it often against 3 AI players on my laptop.
    I hope to try this successor as well to see how I will like it.
    From your thoughts, it might be for me cause I am always looking for more strategy options, and I don't like slow start I usually get in Wingspan until I get enough food resources in order to be able to attract first birds.
    Thanks to both of you again for providing these kinds of great videos.

    • @HexStarDragon
      @HexStarDragon 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It'll obviously be subjective, as every game tries to improve on previous games and mechanics, even if they aren't spinoffs. I'd offer you might prefer Wingspan if: you prefer birds, you prefer that art style, you want a game closer to "entry level" weight, and if you prefer more focus on the engine-building aspects of the game. Wyrmspan obviously has engine-building, but I'd say it has a bit more focus on combos and sequencing (which is signature to the designer's style). Also, Wingspan has a lot of expansions people like, and obviously, Wyrmspan does not at this time, so you don't have any modules like the Wingspan Asia 2-player specific items.

    I would like to hear some more thoughts about this versus Asia at 2. For me, Asia+Oceania was a much better game than base Wingspan. Asia is just more interesting than the base game and Oceania took care of some of my main complaints (food lottery, potential stagnation, prevalence of egg laying strategy). I like what I’m seeing here, but I do wonder how well it rivals Asia specifically at 2?

    I’ve only played Wing Span a few times, so certainly haven’t mastered it. Certainly enjoy it. For, me it seemed fairly logical to learn. Since I know several people that own Wing Span, I very recently got Earth which so far, I’ve only played a few times too and not yet mastered. So, Wyrmspan has a lot of appeal to me and the dragon theme looks awesome. I’m just a little concerned that since it’s a mid weight game it might be harder to find other players. Reality is that the gateway games make it it to the far more often. Despite the temptation, I’ll try to wait a bit before getting this one. Thanks for detailed review focused on the differences and improvements over Wing Span.

    Based on this video only the changes seem to make the gameplay more rigid (having to invest into excavation that can only be used for one thing). Don't like the variable amount of actions either. Also not sure how to feel about not being able to use the engine you built due to increasing cost 🤔. The theme seems great, though. Maybe should look into this more, still.

    • @walris44
      @walris44 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yeah, I am curious if this version is less fun for engine building and more fun for people who like tallying points through a less random more complex puzzle the game presents to you. Will really come down to how restrictive it feels and how powerful the engines can get to possibly work around these new restrictions.

    Not played this one so hard to say but what I've seen points 2 & 5 are just the opposite for me. 2. I think I'll miss the birdhouse, it brings (most @ 3+ players) some tension and tactical decisions and @ least somewhat player interaction. 5. Nice to have an extra turn(s) but maybe it tends to unbalance the game when someone gets cards that give extra coins and others don't... But like I said, not played yet 🙂

    I am in a dilemma now. Bought Wingspan on the hype and the beautiful art, but its just too... uh...unmotivating to play. Literally fell asleep trying to play the app version to learn it. Sure I do this and then get an egg and then we roll dice and later I get a bird...but why do I care? This has to go up and that can only go in the middle and .... ugh fiddly.
    We just played Meadow the other night and the tableau build and the victory points are just so straightforward. It too is very pretty and we were going for particular creatures just because we liked how they looked. We like Meadow a lot. Maybe I am just not into birds? Splendor has that unique card unique cost obvious big points that makes it fun to add a particular card to your area, but it is so fast.
    So now you are selling me partially on Wyrmspan. My son loves Dragons, the art looks amazing, and this game takes even longer? It has even more little things to do? Does it feel more or less fiddly than Wingspan? Do the actions seem motivating? Are you like 'Ooh I want that blue one it has 4 victory points but I need to add a cave here and get a blue gem?'

    • @HexStarDragon
      @HexStarDragon 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not sure of your gaming/local situation, but there will be a lot of copies in the world, so you can probably find a chance to get a game in with friends, at a local game store, or at a Con or event. There are no KS-style exclusives, and Stonemaier continually reprints their game, so you don't need to rush to any decision.

  • @johngoodwin9606

    I really tried to watch the whole video, but I have no taste for "fantasy" themes. I have Wingspan and love seeing birds I've photographed. Even if the game mechanics were twice as good in Wyrmspan, I couldn't enjoy it. However, if the theme was North American Dragonflies instead of Dragons -- I'd be super interested. I must have a limited imagination.

  • @zhivik
    @zhivik 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Interesting, personally I find the elongation of turns a downgrade from Wingspan. I consider the progressively decreasing number of turns you have each round in Wingspan as a nice mechanic to build tension. I don't mind the idea of getting additional actions in principle, but based on a playthrough I saw, it is not that difficult to get more coins, which makes the game feel looser than Wingspan, not tighter. Regarding the cave cards, it is just one more thing to think about, but it doesn't fundamentally change the game, at least for me, so I am indifferent. The Dragon Guild is a nice mechanic, and the removal of randomness in what resources you are getting is an improvement, too.
    Regarding the abundance of cards - this is something I actually dislike in all those popular games, including Wingspan, Terraforming Mars, or Ark Nova. There are just too many cards, and the more different they are, the more you are exposed to randomness when you try to build an engine, which is a core mechanic in all of these titles. I do like the art, but apart from that, I think games designers should ease on including a couple of hundreds of cards in such games.
    All in all, I find Wyrmspan a fine game for family entertainment, but I feel the theme is mostly absent. This could have been easily an expansion to Wingspan, and no one would have noticed (just replace dragons with birds, and caves with nests). I do agree that you don't need to own both games, but I would recommend Wingspan over this one, as I feel Wingspan is a better game for its target audience (which doesn't include me, by the way).

    Always appreciate the enthusiasm and energy you bring to your reviews. You’ve become my favourite board game reviewers on TH-cam. However, this one is a big miss for me. I could not be any less interested or disappointed in a game than I am about this one. While Wingspan introduced us in a fun way to the amazing array of actual bird life, this is about imaginary and childish creatures. They could have done something amazing instead, on insects or mammals or genuine extinct species that would have fit it perfectly with the Wingspan genre

    First Scythe now Wingspan, this company is without any new ideas. Some tweaks and nips and tucks is all about grabbing the Wingspan audience, and $. That is it. I prefer something imbedded in the real world. Wyrm should probably be put on a fishing line and used for the fishes. I recon, still, it will be successful as who doesn’t like dragons which are cool.

      I would not play one vs another just for the theme… Wyrmspan have just “more” than Winsgpan. For someone which is not super fan of familiar games, there is no sense in chosing Winsgpan justo for “birds x Dragons” the games is much more evolved.

    Another SM-game I will pass on. The Dragon-"Facts" book is a terrible name IMHO. Instead of dragons (yet another phantasy-themed game) a (fictional) time-travel back to the period of dinosaurs (or into Arthur Cannon Doyles "Lost world") would have sold me on the game. Also, from what I can tell NOT having played it (and probably never will), the mechanics look rather confused and harder to get the engine going. I would go as far and say this game is rather a cash grab. But your video is as always very good, and I love your excitement.

    Hard pass. I used to have all Wingspan games, but then I realized that I'm not as interested in games that work even if you remove cards from the deck. Wingspan and Ark Nova, unlimited cards, we'll never go through it all in one game, can't really hope or expect a specific card.

      Crazy, that some people might care about a mechanically more sound game. Yes, I like birds but I could only consider buying Wingspan if I just wanted to look at the pictures because it is mechanically flawed as hell.

      @RaK0 can you be more specific in short about what you find mechanically so flawed as hell in Wingspan?
      I played more than 50 games of it, and I do see some flaws for me, but those are relatively slight problems easily rectified with easy simple houserules(even though I play without them because I only play digitally so it's not possible for me to houserule it).
      I personally see "flawed" or "bad" mechanics in almost all the games, more often than not. And basically every game I do own(which is not nearly as many as I do want to own) I houserule some part of them when I play them(with my family, which is my "gaming group").
      It's basically impossible for me to be 100% behind all of the game parts, in any game. There is always something for me worthwhile houseruling some part of every game I play.
      If I had it phyisically I would houserule Wingspan to give me more options on cards and foods, to reduce the luck factor and put more emphasize on options to mitigate luck, and to also discourage/disable such easy and boring "egg-spamming" strategy which unfairly overshadow the main point of this game for me: searching for powerful birds I like and enticing("building") them with required food.
      Food is at the beginning very hard to come by and I always find myself having slow start and feel like I am wasting my turns getting one food at a time. Especially even when you can take two food without additional cost, you mist get lucky to get those foods you really need badly.
      Unless I immediately(ASAP) build 2 birds in the forest, which isn't always possible if you get unlucky with the card draw, and it almost excludes all the other strategies in the beginning from being worthwhile and winning(though it's possible and I do win, with over 80 and sometimes 90 points, that way). Having to always play at least two birds first in the first round, in order to get the engine for food to the point that other actions are worthwhile at all.
      That my problem with the food, and from what I see also the problem with egg-strategy, seems to be resolved within mechanics of this new game Wyrmspan. For that I am especially interested in trying this new game. Even though I first need to try Oceania expansion for Wingspan, which is said to resolve the egg-strategy (and even food problem).
      Otherwise I love the mechanics. I love building(enticing) birds and running my engine with those builds (even many tines in a row - I don't consider that a negative or the flaw, as some do, because that's what I was working towards and I am responsible for, unlike egg strategy which doesn't involve any planing, just playing any birds in the plains row and laying egs whole last round because building birds isn't worthwhile/efficient compared to points gained through egs, especially since you need to discard egs to build birds).
      I was mainly commenting above(or I meant to at least) on the theme, not the mechanics. Realistic beautiful theme seems to me more worthwhile than "generic" fantasy of made up creatures. But that's how I see it, my opinion and taste, so...
      I hope you answer. I am interested to find out what are all the problems you have with Wingspan.

    Spin Off of an already boring and overrated Game.
