The World of Ragnarok Online

  • Sit back and relax as you fly through the world of Ragnarok Online, see the areas, listen to the music and revisit the place you may once have called home.
This project is the culmination of a several years long personal project to load and visualize Ragnarok Online game data and run that within the Unity game engine. I thought hard about how to share the results of that work with people, and decided that a video would be best. The video itself took about 2 months to fully build, and I learned a lot while making it. If you watch this and think to yourself "I remember when I was there with my friends," then the video will have served it's purpose.
If you want to follow along with my work you can find me on Twitter as @RoDoddler. Thank you!

I'm still with the man I met 15 years ago on iRO.
He took me as I was, never asking me to make a bomber or a champ to be more efficient.
We worked together with what we had to achieve our goals.
When we finally made our first hundred million zeny and dropped our first MvP card, we decided to give it a try for real, to find out if we worked as well in real life as we do in-game.
It turns out we did, and now every day I wake up thinking, "Just another day in Jawai (paradise)"
Sitting and reminiscing with him over this video has been so much fun. The memories feel so real. It reminds me of why I fell in love with him to begin with.
From stories I've heard around the internet, it seems RO is especially conducive to romance and relationship building, moreso than other MMOs it seems.
I wonder why that is. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this as well as their own love stories - even if they were only fleeting ❤

Ive always said a similar thing. I do feel like after so many years this is becoming a serious thing that members of rune midgard really have life changing or altering experiences under their belt. I used to tell people back then but with the community so fractured, it was hard to meet anyone who could confirm my insane allegations. It all just sounds typical fan boy from the outside but in this case it's an unspoken IYKYK of indescribable proportions, just like the disturbingly heavy nostalgia no other media, game, or event has ever left.
I give iRo credit for providing the environment i am most proud to be apart of. I'm more an iRo kid than a 90s kid, and im pretty damn 90s so that's heavy. Thank you for scratching the urge to leave a comment because it reminds us, the experienced, that we were never alone in the novel experience of having fallen into what i think was really the closest vision of an MMORPG and what could happen through community-based gaming.
I know a lot of ppl jumped ship to WoW, but we all know it was a rebound game and lots of folks got married to the rebound out of spite and familiarity. Nothing is ragnarok and after 20 years, i have to tell people im from "the old internet". My biggest regret was thinking things would only get better into the future, and not realizing it was the bitcoin of gaming. Get on early, dont miss the airship to Juno(or Yuno, your choice) a flash in the pan, and a whole lifetime of intimate personal development squashed into a couple fast and DEDICATED years.
(For those who dont understand the difference; in WoW you are pushed by time constraints and game mechanisms to pull hours and be consistent, you HAD to be there, the game punished laziness. In ragnarok we'd spend 18 hours on the computer just to hang in town and be with friends, maybe level or hunt cuz were bored or feeling frisky, but the game barely had a story, MVP monsters spawned regularly each day, no pressure to do anything at ALL. And yet we pulled hours that would make people sick today.) Ive never been able to convey to an outsider the accurate rendition, but seeing a 15 year partnership forged in iRo is so completely unsurprising to me, "well, yeah, of course." Thanks for making it to the end of what was supposed to be a "lol i remember" comment. This always happens lol.

@@johnnyMcSheep I would say the feeling of exploration coupled with how "new" it all felt. It was my first MMO, and I reckon it was the same for a lot of people, and the game's nature of being grindy lent itself so well to just meeting new people and trying out weird things and reaching new areas almost accidentally. Exploring without markers telling you where you should go was a blast.

      "
Imagine being at school, its almost leaving time, your parents come pick you up. You lunch extra fast and run to the computer room, you turn on that windows XP and while MSN messenger is loading you don't hesitate to double click on the ragnarok online desktop icon, its going to take a while to load, but you know it will be worth it.
You hear the nifelheim song while you login into your account, you hear the "bell" SFX and load your lvl 23 archer into the entrance of payon dungeon, right where you left it the past night. You start receiving the "hello messages" from all the guild members while you hear the payon theme (29:30), someone invites you to a party of 2, an acolyte and a thief.
You all buff yourself outside of the dungeon and enter to kill some skeletons, poporings, and the usual zoombie while the intense music plays. After a while, you go to payon dungeon level 2 (theme at 31:40) to just get your first Appe O' Archer hat!
Now its getting late, your parents are calling you to dinner, but you decide to take the sandwitch to the room, you eat it while everybody in the party is sitting around payon dungeon level 2, you're chatting about that rare Skeleton Soldier card the thief wants to get once he's an assasin, or dream about participating in your guild War of Emperium once you all get the level for it.
Its almost sleep time by now, and you got to level very close to be a hunter with the party, the acolyte decides to go to make her class change quest, and you decide to go with the thief to level up at Toy Factory level 1, to try to kill some gift boxes. You miss a lot and sometimes the box hits you like 1K and kills you. Decide to go back to payon city and just chill for the rest of the day....
You go to sleep, thinking how cool the priest was when helping, how hard your double strafe was hitting at level 10 and how much difference that apple O' archer was doing by giving you that extra Dexterity.
Tomorrow is a good day again..!

Im 33 years old now and i played euRO from age 15 onwards. Throughout my twenties and even to this day i keep coming back via private servers and iRO. This game has a special place in my heart. Nothing comes close to the MMORPG feeling back in those days in the early to mid 2000s. The sheer amount of content, the complex class system, the sense of exploration in a big world with many dangers, the rarity of many items/cards/equips... All of this makes the content of games like this a true achievement. There was a whole buzzing economy going on. I spent days farming, checking stores and prices, selling/trading with other people. I was a real ingame-hustler:) Especially during autumn/halloween and christmas time this game was so magical man... Nothing comes close to these gaming experiences. Im playing WoW Season of Discovery now and its very fun, yet deep in my heart i would really just love to play RO again with a little modernization and quality of life changes. This guy right here, absolutely gets it.
Around 5 years ago, I made a simple Flash SWF, where 4 Poring-types would hop around on a random timer, just to enjoy the sounds of the game, whilst listening to the BGMs (E.g. Peaceful Forest), but I wish I could- or someone else, would do a slow-pan over the maps, with the sounds and the respective BGMs and... here we are, half a decade later, you, answering a humble old prayer. 🙏😊
I had still only just gotten through the Prontera area of this video, before realizing this was a 2½ hour treat! I love the low-angle shots, taking off for an overhead view, seeing the world and it's monsters, having "Mini-bosses" and MVP bosses roam about, ready to be spotted, bringing back memories of the various encounters I've had and all the cool loot I'd found occasionally.
😁 This is absolutely astonishing! Thank you very much for taking your time to create this. ❤
*One final edit:* While loving the player-free environment, I DO enjoy the occasional little cameos, like the two Swordies at 2:20 chilling to the calm BGM, sound of water and an occasional Poring hopping by. But the one that absolutely cracked me up, was the Glast Heim Graveyard cameo at 2:15:20 🤣 ANYONE who leveled Acolyte, knew exaaaactly what this was about, right here. Fantastic 👏
Shoutout to my favorite little sh1t 🦊 right here. 35:34 Running around, ringing that big bell-ona-stick of hers. Good times.

It is the best MMO I have ever seen and played. The classic 1-1 and 2-1 classes was the best experience ever, with so many builds and combinations without any real META yet.
This game was amazing because people made it awesome! There was very little grinding need and money greed back then, very social often sitting and chatting by campfire and in towns for hours and hours. Building up your guild, helping friends level or gear up, it was all so organic, so nice and pure... filled with emotions and love.
Every map is etched with tons of memories for all the players combined and all the characters they ever played. The card drop hunting was the best edition which never made old content die out.
We will never see something as beautiful as Ragnarok again, it was truly a gift and a treasure for our childhood !

This was the most peaceful game with the best community ever. In no game after RO have I ever encountered strangers randomly and just teamed up for a party this easily.
If you were out of MP you sat down together and just small talked forever. Nowadays people just want to reach the end asap and sitting down together and just chat is considered a waste of time. Today MMO's are more designed to divide the community than bring them together like RO, or most old-school MMOs, did.
I will never have this much fun in any MMO again.

  • @ocircles738
    @ocircles738 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

Man.. I was quite young when RO came out. There was like this tacit hype for the game IRL; the dweebs were on Runescape and meatheads were on Tibia, but the REAL Gs somehow managed to get the pocket money to play RO. I was an anime fan so you can imagine how badly I wanted to get into literally the first anime-themed MMO I had ever seen, especially after seeing how beautiful the art was/is and seeing all the cool promo material. Unfortunately I was poor and couldn't play. One day though they launched a free trial pass for like a week or two. I can't even begin to describe how magical it was diving into Rune-Midgard.
Diving into it I was already on cloud nine just launching the client with ADSL. While I was killing the slimes I felt like I was in that one episode of Chobits which was a Dragon Quest throwback. Felt like "yeah, finally I'm here. I'm finally experiencing that same culture that I've loved so much for the first time". Even trying to figure out the mysterious UI was wonderful-- who knows what's hiding behind the next button?
But the most striking thing was walking into the city for the first time and seeing all the people there with their stalls, chatting and having fun. It was so overwhelmingly exciting, this sense of discovering a whole new world full of friends and adventure. That particular moment is something that I won't be able to forget for the rest of my life.

      Every MMO has it's story.
If you look at old WoW videos, we who played WoW share our memories there.
If you look at FFXI zone videos, we who played FFXI share our memories there.
If you look at RO videos, yes indeed, we who played share our RO memories there as well.
Same with Runescape, Maplestory, Fly, Rose Online, Anarchy Online, Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Auto Assault, Scarlet Blade, Ultima Online and many many many more.
There's still MMO's around today and you can still make new and beautiful memories in them.
I am making good memories with friends in FFXIV currently ^^ 20 years of MMO's and still going.
So don't feel regret for what you didn't experience. You surely have stories others don't.
They would feel equally about that ^^

One of the things ive missed from RO is the background music setting the mood, as well as the huge and varying landscapes that make the world feel vast and mysterious. Nowadays, most games are relatively small in size, and do not have the same difference in atmosphere. In RO you can go from a happy go lucky city, to a hidden labyrinth, to a modern lab where ghosts of the past kill anything on site, to towers to face gods, and down to hell to face literal satan. RO was one of a kind, and ive honestly played a ton of games in trying to capture the same type of feel but nothing compares.
That being said, i can without the horrific grind and some clunky systems, as well as relatively low ceiling for skill expression.
Wish they made a real RO successor.

I played on a private server in my early teens, going through a lot of health issues. I spent hours in bed playing this- for the longest time I had a screenshot of my name being announced as who defeated another guild's Emperium! It was a silly little accomplishment. I even remember ragnarok being the first place I did Art commissions...
I wish it was easier to jump back into this game. But now with everything going on in my life... And so many people that dedicated their time to this being so far ahead...
This video truly brought a tear to my eye. Remembering my Wanderer and her little pet Lunatic, My Assassin X squashing presents in the Toy Factory. First being shown the Heart on Jawaii.

So many good memories with this game, boy does RO just hit different than so many other mmo's and games I've played. I remember meeting so many good people on this game, creating a crew that used to sit in south Payon near the cliffs on IRO. Shooting the shit, most of us weren't exactly amazing at the game, we weren't top tier MVP killers or WoE addicts, it honestly felt so different to how most gamers approach games now, we had things we enjoyed, levelling alts, making money, helping others, farming items. Hell even just exploring. I can remember playing the game for years yet when I realised I had barely explored the games world at all, so many dungeons, zones, even towns I'd never touched until much later, that kept the game feeling fresh and mysterious.
The worst part is I'd love to login one more time and check my characters, relive some nostalgia but I can't even login to the official servers anymore since I live in the EU and those servers got shut down a good while back. Hopefully one day I'll be able to go back.
