The prawn rolls is actually a part of the snacks usually found in homes during CNY, but can also be a year-round snack. Its filling is what we call the "hae bee hiam", a Hokkien name which is translated as "spicy dried shrimp sambal". This is also used as a culinary sauce, which goes well with kangkong (water spinach). As for the noodles, they were dead popular when it was initially released, but faded quickly because for me it was quite "jelak", a Malay term meaning that you'd get sick of eating something after awhile.

I'd destroy a whole container of prawn rolls every time I visit my friends for Chinese New Year or Hari Raya. I'm not Chinese nor Malay hence why I rarely get to eat it unless it's at a friends house. They are amazing especially if it's spicy. One of my favourite snacks ever.

I used to live in Singapore and as much as Irvins taste great, I just think they're overpriced 😅 the prawn rolls however, is the GOAT! It's an acquired taste but is very normal on a South East Asian cuisine. I personally love it.
As a SEA, salted egg chips is one of my favourite snacks to have along with boba. I also love the salted egg by itself and dishes prepared with it. There’s even a sweet dessert called Liu Sha Bao that’s like a custard salted egg lava bun that’s just phenomenal.
I went through like 4 or 5 packets of salted egg fish skins, on a 2 day trip to singapore. And im not even ashamed ! IT WAS SO WORTH IT. its so sad that i cant get it where i live now.
Fish skin is so common in East Asia and Southeast Asia, like we eat most of our fish with the skin on, in fact we cook the whole fish as is. So when I came to the UK and found out fish skin was weird for British people, I was pretty shocked 😂 We love our fish skin, and we love our fishy/seafoody smell!
The snacks are usually flavoured with the egg yolk of the salted egg only. Usually the eggs are hard-boiled, cut by half along with the shell, then the egg white and egg yolk are scooped out and eaten with congee. That is one of usual way to eat the salted egg. During mid-autumn festival, the egg yolk is used as filling in the mooncake. The mooncake is filled with sweetened lotus seed paste (there are mooncake with sweetened red bean paste filling), with the yolk in the center of the filling itself. The festival is observed by Chinese, and similar celebration also can be found in Korea, Japan and Vietnam.
When my dad comes back from the Singapore, those snacks are a MUST to bring back home! Prawn rolls are pretty normal in SEA countries. Over here, you can find a lot of those prawn rolls served at people’s houses when we celebrate Eid Mubarak and we usually snack on those along with other snacks. Its actually really good. But plain rolls are really good too. You just fry those rolls with nothing inside and sprinkle with salt and dried curry leaves(?). Its pretty addicting!
The brand Irvin is a very popular Singapore based snack company. I’ve seen their products as far abroad as Texas and it’s still the bomb. Not cheap though, one bag is about $6-7 Singapore dollars which is £3-4 or $5-5 USD if my math works. The founders used to be in the Zhi char (Chinese family style dining) business and they transitioned to making snacks after their salted egg recipes were a hit. Salted egg generally refers to duck eggs that have been marinated in salt and charcoal to bring out a very unique flavor. Recently, there’s been a trend of adding salted egg sauce and pastes to food to make it more appealing
Salted egg is very common across Southeast Asia. We eat them as a side (just like some would do with hard boiled egg?) with plain white rice in Malaysia and Indonesia (malay cuisine), and use the salted egg sauce in many southeast Asian Chinese / Thai cuisines. (Stir fried salted egg chicken / pork / fish / prawns / squid). We also use the salted egg yolks, in traditional Chinese savoury sticky rice dumplings in the region.
The salted egg flavor is just the flavor of the yolk of any kind of egg (duck eggs are best) that has been preserved by "pickling" the egg in salt. Once the egg is "salted" (cured) you treat it like any other egg and hard boil it. The white is just plain salty (use it like you would table salt) and the yolk taste like "salted egg flavor". We use salted egg as a condiment to eating rice - kind of like how you would use table salt.

fun fact : indomie released a salted egg flavored instant noodle way back when, it's discontinued now due to luke warm response , which is a shame because personally i think it's delicious.
It divided the nation though, there are people who like it, and there are people who really really hate it. I haven't tried it to be honest, but lots of my friends said their burps smell like salted egg even hours after they ate the noodle. Josh and Ollie should've tasted that though, since they're a hardcore fan of Indomie Mie Goreng...
@@MelisaWijaya it is quite polarizing isn't it lol, and the burp thing is kinda true, but worth it in my opinion. and i agree Jolly should try it, if they can find one. that would be an interesting episode. but i have a feeling that ollie would hate it.
Singaporean here 🇸🇬. I can definitively say that Irvins is super overhyped. There are much better alternatives to get your salted egg yolk fix in Singapore, it’s just that Irvins is much more readily available.
@@jessicalau3152 appreciate your reply :). just to clarify, since IRVINS started selling in 2014, we always sold our 105g packs at SGD 8.00 and 230g packs at SGD 16.00. never changed the price, even when everyone else does :)
let's be honest. gyoza flavored everything is just THAT good. if someone managed to make anything gyoza flavored taste bad, it's their fault. not the gyoza.
The nasi goreng you had with Nigel had dried shrimp in it too, So the prawn roll is just the intense version where shrimp fried in sambal/shrimp paste (aka chili not so jam) is wrapped in spring roll skin and deep fried.
I went ahead and ordered some myself after watching your video last week as I had no idea these were a thing. I am now in some kind of snacky, crunchy heaven after eating some of the normal salted egg potato chips and the black pepper salmon skin :O :O I can't wait to try the other Irvin snacks in my box; thank you so much for showing these off!!
Singaporean here. Prawn rolls (done well) are next level amazing. Dried shrimp (used in prawn rolls), fermented shrimp (chinchalok and belachan) and salted fish are traditional umami flavours in South East Asian cooking. That fist hit of pungency might shock. But if you love it, you will hard core love it.
Salted egg is actually very common in Indonesia (and various other SE Asian countries), so common in fact that during a field trip in my middle school, we went to a duck farm and actually helped in the brining process of fresh duck eggs, my aunt used to brine duck eggs at her home (both to eat and sell), and you can just buy some fresh salted egg from street vendors, it's everywhere here! And in almost every restaurant you can find foods cooked in salted eggs (most commons are seafood, so like salted egg crab, or squids, etc)

Hey hrithika - where do you live? Just curious
2:08 That's THE most relatable reaction to a food i think i've ever seen.
30 seconds in and Ollie referring to fish skins as shiny costumes has already made my day 😂
Thanks to JOLLY, I've really started broadening my horizons food-wise. Never knew how much I was missing out on!
Salmon is not "just another fish!" Try line-caught Pacific salmon that's been cooked skin-side down until the skin is crisp. So, so good!
“It’s a prestigious fish... salmon” seriously reminded me of the pelican in Roald Dahl’s the giraffe the pelly and me 4:51
When my dad comes back from the Singapore, those snacks are a MUST to bring back home!
U south indian?????
@@sreelakshmi4341 No. Malaysia.
Careful tho. Those are pretty pricey. XD
@@withluvmia i always thought curry leaves were a south indian thing....... 😅🤷♀️🤷♀️
That's the reason i asked ..... Guess i have a lot to learn
@@sreelakshmi4341 you just need to widen your view.
Yayyy! jolly is backk :)
love from Indonesia
anyway those snacks look good
The brand Irvin is a very popular Singapore based snack company.
As a Japanese speaker, I was so confused by how Josh said “gyoza” until I realized he was bringing in his Chinese pronunciation. Now I see…
This channel has become my place to do some healing, so much helping with relaxation after work, thanks Josh and Olly❤❤
I love salted eggs, they're so good as a topping or just a little something more as a flavoring. You guys have to try the actual thing at some point.
"That is more bland and I'm absolutely loving it" how British can Ollie be 🤣
Yeah, no. I don't taste my food and say 'thats nice and bland'. Or 'not bland' enough add tap water. It's a stereotype from rationing during ww2.
Lol at Ollie’s face during the “unpaid advert” announcement
im feeling so down today and binge watching jolly vids really helps. thank tou
i'm always so happy when a new jolly episode comes out :D
definitely a fan. and I remember the best salted egg flavoured pot noodles is from indonesia/Thailand. that brand is literally soooo good, and they have actual salted egg and stuff, u guys would luv it so much, coz me n my dorm mates r sooo addicted!!
"I feel like I've run out of animals."
"What? After the 4 that you've named?"
"YOU WOULD'VE BEEN A RUBBISH NOAH."
Burn 🤣🤣🤣
Honestly I'm so glad you did the sortedfood colab. Otherwise I would never have discovered your channels ❤️
Now that you’ve both tried salted egg snacks, you should give the actual salted egg a go!
If you’d like to be more adventurous, try century eggs 👀
Ollie dancing at the beginning and Josh looking at him funny is literally me and my mom lol I'd be randomly dancing to kpop and she's always looking at me weird, silently questioning if I'm okay LMAO
Sad that they hate prawn rolls. Sumpia is so good
😏 I love when Jolly isn't just about food. I often find myself excited to have fun with you guys. :D
You guys are so much more than just food. You guys are fun and I love the sense of community in the channel and seeing everyone evolve.
Oh what a jolly monday!
I highly recommend salted egg wafer biscuits (you likely had the sweet version as kids) they are savory and just a thing of beauty.
I woke up just in time 😂 y’all are amazing
Their remarks are the best and the most awaited haha. Especially, Ollie's. As always, I'm thankful to every video you guys upload. Thank you JOLLY! See you JOLLY soon~
fun fact : indomie released a salted egg flavored instant noodle way back when, it's discontinued now due to luke warm response , which is a shame because personally i think it's delicious.
Every Chinese New Year I'm just holding onto a container of prawn rolls, snacking away xD my fav CNY snack
Singaporean here 🇸🇬. I can definitively say that Irvins is super overhyped. There are much better alternatives to get your salted egg yolk fix in Singapore, it’s just that Irvins is much more readily available.
Exactly. When it started it wasn't so expensive. They became so.overpriced. I can buy "non branded" salted fish skin elsewhere
I prefer the Golden Duck brand and Crusry brand over Irvins
@@jessicalau3152 appreciate your reply :). just to clarify, since IRVINS started selling in 2014, we always sold our 105g packs at SGD 8.00 and 230g packs at SGD 16.00. never changed the price, even when everyone else does :)
I’m dying in pain on the couch from my period. Thank u for saving my day 😭😭😭😭
let's be honest. gyoza flavored everything is just THAT good. if someone managed to make anything gyoza flavored taste bad, it's their fault. not the gyoza.
The nasi goreng you had with Nigel had dried shrimp in it too,
So the prawn roll is just the intense version where shrimp fried in sambal/shrimp paste (aka chili not so jam) is wrapped in spring roll skin and deep fried.
싱가포르에서 고등학교 다녔을때 편의점에 있었는데 다른 과자에 비해서 너무 비싸서 안먹었던 기억이😅
Just Ollie starting the video with Voguing. Classic Ollie. LOVE ITTT
JOLLY !!
2:55 “Say that to the fish!!!” lolllll Ollie’s comedy gold
Even the intro shows how extra ollie is HSNXJSJSJ
"You would've been a rubbish Noah!" Best behind the camera comment EVER!!! HAHAHAHAAA!!!
Hi!
Hi UwU
I love that Ollie's burps are much more gentle compared to Josh's that no eagle cries are needed
Ollie's burps right before the prawn chips are kiiiiiilliiiiing me! 😂😂😂
But if you love it, you will hard core love it.
some REALLY good prawn rolls can be soooo addictive it helps get you through the house visits during festive season haha
i can imagine ollie as noah saving sea animals and leaving everything else behind lmao
