What I enjoy most about this film was the complexity of the story the encouragement it gives to viewers to learn, and the artistic beauty of it. The timid boy and Richard Parker were the same and throughout the film you see this interaction between what appears to be two characters (in the lifeboat). However, it seems that Richard Parker is actually the alter ego, the raw, untamed nature of adulthood and/or change that the boy must face (like we all must), which is frightening and yet an important part of human development

I watch tons of movies because I'm a bit of a cineaste. And I can honestly say Life of Pi is one of the best films I've ever seen. A masterful piece of work.

I just finished watching this film again on Netflix. This is my second time watching this movie and I must say this is truly a masterpiece. He cinematography and the meaning behind the story is remarkable.
Animals surely do have souls. That's why they're called animals. Anima is Italian for soul. And that comes from Latin of course
great interview and some very good questions n answers, I can especially relate to the ending as a writer myself, making the content then looking at the content you made is far different then looking at the content of someone else. It is is impossible for you to look at it the same way you look at the content of others. For when you look at your own content you remember the experience, the struggles, the joys and the intentions you had for it. Plus you already know each scene since u wrote it so that is abit of a spoiler : P
just curious why he chosen Tiger?
Symbolysm. A tiger represents the following traits. Will power, Determination, and Solidarity. A tiger in real life is a solidiraty animal, it is so extreme that the Chinese even invented this phrase. "two tigers can not share the same mountain". Through out the movie even though Pai started out with many "animals" one by one they all died, the "tiger" was eventualy alone and must survive off it's own "determination and will power"
Very nice interview. I like when he said he couldn't watch it like a movie; he had too many flashbacks of the making of it, that it wasn't a movie, it was his life. That's interesting to know. He also handled well with the complex and personal question thrown at him about whether he believed in God. He strikes me as an interesting man to know, someone with depth.
He is a true movie maker. An example to Humankind and Filmmakers - The world !!!

@@pain002 you have to believe in something to be alive, to survive.
I always pondered the thought of not being able to enjoy something because you created it. people being "oh wow, this book is amazing" and you the author imagining how it must make them feel as you yourself can't feel anything from it because you wrote it.
As a writer myself i can say that's not true at all. Creation doesn't come entirely from the mind. It comes from the heart and shows itself to your mind. You can say the creator is the one that FEELS IT ALL before any reader does.

I agree. I saw this film (literally) 13 weekends in a row and it is faultless. First director to really master 3D and CGI. It wasn't gimmicky, Ang Lee used it to make his story.
And yeah, I read the book first.

This movie was easily one of the best movie I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Ang is one the best directors ever in the history of cinematography.

What struck me about this movie is the beauty of Life. If you look around the world at all the birds, animals, fish, insects & even fluorescent algae that glows in the ocean, it's hard not to believe that "a creator" had a hand in all of it. That's why I chose to believe the 1st story...

The alternate ending it shows some newspaper clippings that show sightings of the tiger on the coast line looking very healthy with the guy interviewing just smiling.

Michele Gardner I think he represents Pi's alter ego, his courage and his inhumanity. If u think about it Richard mostly appeared when Pi was in trouble when he needed courage and left as soon as Pi was safe and didn't need that much violence in the form of courage.

so which story was true.. the one with the tiger/animals.. or the other story with the cook and the sailor?
Simon0 I don't think the movie is about what's true I think it's about which was is better the one with the animals is symbolic to having faith and the human one is an agnostic view. The movie is trying to tell us that faith makes life better as the animal story is less horrifying than the human one and the animal story is the one with faith. Deep down Pi knows that the animal story is an illusion but this illusion help him keep his morality and not be a murderer.
Its not about what's true. Its on our perspective of the world. No one has the "truth" about our Universe, science doesn't have all the answers yet so what's hold us is faith in the stories.

The second story is what actually happened. That's the whole twist with this movie.

Many in India speak English, perfect and otherwise.
Indian people put a lot of emphasis on learning and speaking English.
India has many Anglican families(not in a religious sense), if you and your partner are from diff states most probably you speak English, so Anglican.

From the small points of information that are mere drops in an ocean, most of which have not come to us by direct experience, we weave from our own personal imaginations, aided by endless times of others" imaginations, a narrative that explains and gives form to that mystery
personal belief in magical beings should not be included in movie. unless thats clearly what the movie is about
+Connor Dow Think of it as being in an alternate planet similar to Earth in everyway but with the exception of a race of superior humanoids which have grown the ability to control to PH level of the island and have shaped the island as well as encasing their own teeth in the plant and breeding meerkats which have had no contact with humans/humanoids except from the breeder. No God, just superior beings with advanced knowledge.

The most beautiful film I’ve ever seen.
The movie was pretty good, but those aspect ratio changes definitely felt too jarring for me, especially when the fish passes over the black on the frame (I thought the projectionist had done a dodgy job).
