Will H I've been the only white person in the room too. The fact that you sense that everyone hates you and are looking at you like wtf are you doing here is not comfortable. I think from white people is more like, I want to treat this person right so they don't think I hate black people. I've been in situations when I'm trying to be extra nice because I tried to make the person feel like they are welcomed here, from black people towards whites it's just straight up hate.
Totally! When people are excited and inviting you to participate in their culture, you can't help but feel home because you're being WELCOMED into something they cherish! It stops being about the culture and starts being about the people. You're like "Wow! You, as *people* , showed me such openness and love... how can I NOT feel like I'm home?"; Home is where you're embraced and accepted for who you are.
That's one thing I like about Jeannie. She's a culture appreciator, not a culture appropriator. She genuinely loves different cultures and people aren't hesitant to share their culture with her.

positive learning can make you see good in people and be strong enough to completely disregard blunt racism. If more taught like that racism would disappear. History is weird like that, children don't see racism. BUT we teach history to keep it from repeating itself, and because without knowledge there is no way to control the flow of information or maybee more likely misinformation spreading from older generations. SO we do best in staying positive and teaching our children equality and that race doesn't really matter, only people who have been taught hate think so. No race is less or more than any other, however because of history we will have to face this or that sometimes and never be afraid to speak up for yourself because even if it is happening it's not ok. And they are the ones who are doing wrong.
Genetics are such an interesting thing. Even though both of my parent's are latino, my father has white skin but is usually tan and my mother has light black skin. We are four siblings and I'm exactly in the middle with a medium skins tone with super dark brown eyes, I have one sister who's skin is much darker with hazel eyes and very textured hair, one is white with green eyes, and the other one is super white with greyish hazely eyes and her hair has natural blonde highlights. It's crazy
^^To the person above, that's because being latino isn't a race, but an ethnic group specifically made up of various races (white/black/indigenous) or even just one of those (most are white, a close second are indigenous, a large minority are black).

I agree with you. It's one of the reasons why I prefer the hot topic section of The View - they say all kinds of politically incorrect stuff and don't care. The Real is too soft at times.
It has a lot to do with the time slot and the network I think. It's usually, Mother's etc who are actually watching when it airs, and typically younger women are still in 9-5 schedule/school/not yet mothers with a more flexible schedule. Them being on the more conservative Fox network is why, in my opinion, they can discuss religion, and Jesus for however long they want (to each their own), and never discuss other religions, world topics, or heavy topics such as racism. Wendy Williams gets away with a lot more because she's just talking celebrity gossip, so it's frivolous compared to racial politics.
Yeah I agree. I go to the view if I want real, deep, controversial conversations. I love The Real but here is where I get my occasional laughs and fun and ironically...not really a place for a REAL convo. And I think that's something they should improve on. Stop trying to be PC all the time and SPEAK. You have a platform...USE IT
People who are looking for extra deep conversations should check other shows. The Real is primarily a light hearted entertaining show that sometimes "touch" on serious issues! Don't go to Popoyes looking for caviar or filet mignon!
I totally understand what you mean, however, I have to disagree. Some of these other shows are not able to reach a wide audience like The Real does, some of these other shows simply do not have the platform to do so. They have the opportunity to raise awareness about racism and other deep-rooted topics. They simply can not raise a topic about race and brush it under the rug and act like racism does not exist. I personally feel that a lot of what they said is a fantasy we all will like to believe that being different is amazing all the time but the reality of life is that being different is hard, I don't think they are being "The Real" if they are not completely honest. If they want to have a light hearted show they can, they do not have to bring up race and stuff and don't call it The Real, but if they are going to talk about it talk about it properly and lets talk about the reality of racism in the 21st century. I think that father was worried people (other children) may judge his daughter and preconceived notions about her because there is a lack of positive representation of black people in the media, and it's just for him to feel that way because it is true. Some races have more negative representation and some other races have more positive representation and it skews the way other people view other races and he does not want his daughter to be viewed negatively. unfortunately "The Real" did not raise that all.
Yea I completely get what you're saying but I disagree. What's the point of the repping themselves as a panel comprised entirely of women of color if they don't mean to talk about issues from their unique perspective? Why call themselves "The Real", implying a show of candid commentary if all they give are cookie-cutter, made for tv responses?

She is as much a white person as she is a black person. Quite naturally it's awkward for her. That's why she said "Don't make it about skin color" She wants to dismiss it because it's uncomfortable and ambiguous. I just can't stand how white men date biracial women and say they are dating a black woman so they are not racist. I just roll my eyes because they fail to admit black and biracial are not the same thing.
Children aren't as slow as we think they are; it's important to make sure that they are aware of the world that they're living in. There's a fine line between killing their ignorance and killing their innocence, however naive children will learn the realities of the society we live in and it's much safer to teach the tough lessons in your home than out there on the streets. Please teach your children to acknowledge and respect everyone's differences in order to have a more peaceful and equal society in the future!!

I completely agree, especially with having 4 women of color that represent different colors really, I'm disappointed they couldn't really get really real, pun intended. I wanted to hear, because I know they've had them, what negative experiences they've had because of there race. Yes, I agree! In my opinion, growing up blind/ignoring the way most of the country sees people of color can be quite dangerous to the mind. Eventually a person of color will inevitably experience the negativity that's faced in life because of their race. This is just the truth, and the only way to change the truth is to be aware of it. I am about to turn 20, and as a child my parents slowly but surely let me know the kind of skin I was in and how some people would be opposed to it. They even shared with me the horrible things they've experienced as a Black woman and a Black man. Because of this, all of my trying times that i've faced were almost expected and I was basically ready for them because of the knowledge and love my family gave me at home. We don't want to inject our kids with fear or hate, but prepare them so they can become the change that our world is in need of.
I agree because if it really wasn't about skin colour as they said, why would there be a need for a television show with 4 women of colour? They have this platform because so many of us are underrepresented in society and need to see ourselves
One thing about Tamar even though she got on my damn nerves sometimes she would be the only one to actually address these topics to an extent. They went from race to culture which isn't the same thing and Tamera gave her usual "just be yourself" speech. They talk about being the only show with a panel of POC but are afraid to address POC issues to keep those checks coming from guess who...

Thank you! That was my thought exactly. The man was just expressing concern over the people who will look at his daughter differently because of her skin color. No matter how we try to wish those stereo types away, they still exist and we have to deal with them.
The "World" does not hate black people. racist people are the ones who are hating. there's a difference. when we realize that we as a people do not have to play into the victim role, the world will truly change. if the world hated black people, there would not be an Oprah, an Obama, a Nelson Mandela, and countless other amazing human beings of African descent making a difference. My point is you have the power to be whoever and whatever you want to be despite what a few racist folks might think of it.
They all had great points. But I think they missed the whole point.. Being confident as a women and being confident as a child are two different scenarios. And it is a huge difference between the two. I'm almost 20 years old and I am not as confident as I want to be but if I were to compare now to when I was a little girl, it's not even comparable. That's how much of a difference it is. This little girl isn't going to have the confidence that these women have because it takes time to gain.
I agree, but seeing confident beautiful role models help kids have someone to look like that looks like them. I wish I had someone like Jeannie as a kid to look up up, I'm Asian haha. But identifying positively with someone successful, especially one that looks like you can do wonders growing up
I disagree I was more confident as a child than I am now as a 20 y/o woman. It's only when people started pointing things out about the way I look that I started to feel slightly insecure. And I agree with Loni, I'm not going to let my "blackness" or whatever get in the way of me doing what I want to do in life. I've always been in a predominant white surrounding so I'm used to being one of the few black people in the room. I also don't feel like my race is a primary concern for me.
+Johanna Figuerosa I also think people should be instilling values of self love and appreciation, into their kids. Teaching children to learn and appreciate their skin/race/culture when they're young is a lot easier to do so than when they're much older, because their mindset is harder to change. You shouldn't rely on other people to tell you/validate your self worth, that power should come from you and you alone. (As cheesy as that sounds) I really do believe in that!
I agree. I feel like they missed the point. When does the conversation about race start? I didn't know about race until I was 5 being called the N word by kids my age. How do you prepare the kids to properly deal with race issues? It takes a long time to develop the type of self confidence that they speak of. Kids won't have that time.

Idk why I can't reply directly to your comment with this new update... There are many examples but one relative to me would be hair. If I were to let my hair grow in its most natural state it would most likely form an Afro. Kinky hair is something with heavy ties to race. My hair grows that way. Culturally the Afro can be a fashion statement for some. For others a political statement if you look at the 70s. Then you see other segments of society that don't naturally have an Afro rocking it because it's a trend. American culture for example has influences of different races. Look at dark skin. It is something that people are born with. Some cultures use that as a class system for groups of people. Culture and Race are two different things but I was just pointing to the ties between the two.

Jollof is a senegalese traditional dish that spread through nomads and muslim empires and Plantain is something that grows naturally in subasaharan africa and many parts of asia that eat it too. Theres no such thing as "black culture". Black american culture sure. However Africa is too diverse to just assume they all share the same cultures though some share similarities due to tribes belonging to more than one nation

I'm latina, but I remember when I first watched an episode of The Real and feeling like "woah!" amazed at the cast. Ironically less because of Adrianne being there (still love her), and more because of Jeannie. Because I recognized right away that there is definitely less Asian representation in the media, other than maybe news anchors compared to other minorities. I have a very mixed group of friends, and it's important to see all backgrounds getting their voice heard, and I have these conversations with them. I honestly had a visceral reaction of being delightedly surprised to have a real diverse cast, and not just putting 1 minority voice in the mix of 5 women and calling it a day.
I'm not saying you have to be angry but this was the most watered down conversation about race I've ever heard from a group of minority women. This is not a reflection of what I talk about with my sisters/friends. Especially in these times!
wow. I could tell. She doesn't seem to really connect with what it really means to be Latino, more of just the idea of it. So annoying but it makes sense. Nuyoricans are the worst and so racist. My whole life I was treated like I wasn't really Boricua bc I'm black and my Spanish wasn't great. People actually told me i was lying and that no Ricans look like me. Meanwhile I saw people like me on the island everytime I got the chance to be there.
AshleyLaGata You all are reading too much into this and drawing unfair conclusions about her. She never went into depth about her race. She simply stated she was a latina woman, which she is! The term "Latino" connects all races of Latin American descent. She never said Latino was a race in itself.
Loni, I was with you until the last part of your statement. Most black people do not go around thinking that all people are bad and against us. For the most part we all are aware when we are the only black person anywhere but it is when the non-black people react or mistreat you, that is when we are clear that there is an issue for them. Your statement makes it seem like we are creating racism in our heads without justifiable cause. And I don't believe that as black people should down play the severity of racism in this country. You may not make it a part of you but a great number of people have no choice but to face the difficulties and pains of racism. The racial issue is not about the people who are accepting of race, it is about those who are not.
Great point👏🏾. I was the only black boy in my school when I was 11(i came from Ghana to Italy). I didn't notice any "differences" between me and them. But they let me know that I was different from them.(they were sitting on the older side of the class away from me) Black don't go around thinking that ppl are racist...but eventually the non-black will show their true colors.
It's crazy how people deny racism. It's freaking internalized and yes a 3 year old is aware. When I was five I knew my friend was white and I wasn't. And because she was white she was somehow more beautiful. Yes we do live in a racist society that has brainwashed us.
Your comment is really refreshing. They really re-enforced the argument of those who like to accuse people of playing the 'race card' -many of which have not experienced racism. I would also add that their focus on culture does a little more harm than good. Linking race to culture can fuel stereotypes. People often categorise black people as a whole because of the actions, choices and preferences of some. I'm still trying to figure out what the 'black culture' consists of to be honest. I like classical music and enjoy ninteenth century American and British literature. To some that makes me less 'black'. Lol.
Loni is lost! Kids do know about race. A three year old white girl at my college (her mum brought her in, the mum was picking up some things) told a black young lady that she had "dirty ugly hair and dirty skin", then she said "my hair is beautiful and blonde". She was obviously taught to be vicious but seemed really happy and proud of herself for being nasty to someone. The lady she said it to was a tall, slim, gorgeous, well put together, part time (Indian and black mix, dark skin) MODEL/ student (who all the adults could not take their eyes off). But that evil 3 year old girl didn't see any of the young ladies attributes she just saw black and thought it was ok to insult the poor lady. These are the people who grow up to be racist because they were taught it at home.

In a way, it was. Mind you, I was about to get agitated as well at where the conversation seemed to be going when Loni started talking, but by the end, I realized that the approach they're taking for addressing racism in children isn't necessarily a bad approach for little humans who are just becoming acclimated into the world or even an adult who has been in this world and fed BS about minorities their whole lives and now thinks that we're all horrible human beings. At the crux of police brutality, racism in all its forms and prejudices and/or stereotypes is the idea that has been fed to the White masses that minority races are somehow inferior yet, if we as humans taught young children that we're all multifaceted and fully actualized beings that just have different cultures who all hold value, imagine how much more positive life could be. It wasn't the conversation I thought I wanted in the beginning, but they did have a point.

HOWEVER at the same time , as a young man who eventually wants to get married and have children ; I don't want my children to be scared or nervous because they are the only one who is younger or the only short or only black one on the team or in a certain space ! I think we at first are usually intimidated by “ nobody looks like me “ but we should focus more on our values that we bring to a team , to a group , to a business because we are more than our outer appearance and we should focus on so! I completely agree! I have children who are the only black children in their class and I tell them everyday they are just as good and smart if not better than their classmates. I'm not teaching my children fear; I'm teaching those around my children to fear what they have in store. Peace

You are referring to colorism which is prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group. There's a difference between colorism and racism.
Yes there is a difference between colorism and racism. However, light skinned people are treated differently by whites as well over their darker counterparts.
I have to say, this one was one of my FAVORITE segments. I agree with Loni and Tamera, and it is so healing to hear it from women of color! They know and understand racism. I relate to this so much. Just last year I started hanging out with a group of people who are now my ride or die and Im the one who just learned English and is fluent in Spanish and is an immigrant and before I was just so shy because I saw myself as inferior but now I can teach them what they want and they can teach me what I don't know and I just love it and they love me even more for being this special

Such a GREAT conversation! All four ladies had great points of view. And I'm glad Jeannie was able to (indirectly) shed light on why she's attracted black men -- not that she had to. Jeannie grew up in exactly the same neighborhood I did. My neighborhood's a mix of black, Hispanic, Caribbean families. Yet we have a Vietnamese/Puerto Rican family next door and a Cambodian family up the block. As a matter of fact, a Haitian family lives in the house that used to be owned by another Vietnamese family (who moved out in the middle of a blizzard - YIKES!). I'm so lucky to live in a culturally diverse neighborhood. Even the lone white girl down the street who lives with her black boyfriend and his entire family! Love her too! It's what makes my hood, My Hood!

Im the only black person at my office,not even African American,im from africa. But never for once have i felt like oh im de only black person,rather im very excited to let them see my culture whenever I wear my ankara to work and stuff like that and they love it.
This was a great topic and I agree with all of the co hosts. Kids at a young age should not worry about racism. Of course when the children get older, they will experience racism and then that is when you need to talk about it with them. But for now when the children are young, they just need to enjoy life and their childhood. Kids just needs to be themselves and don't let anyone define them.
Each of them made some great points. I will say that the man has a right to be concerned as I had my first incident with racism in kindergarten. He needs to support and love his little girl and just be prepared to answer questions honestly and age appropriately.

The human race is one. Humanity has been conditioned to believe we are all from different races to create division and justify violence committed throughout history. We are all different because every person is their own world but we also have so many things that make us alike. At the end of the day, we are all brothers and sister within the human race. And I hope one day people begin to realize this and put a stop to those who promote and benefit such a division among the human race. (I wonder who would benefit from racism and genocide...) I really hope one day people can get along. Look how diverse the girls are in ethnicity and how cool it is that they can come together to make such a nice show.

Where we all have the right to think differently, regardless of if others agree or not. And no, we are not from different races. Humanity is one. Unless of course you consider yourself not human. Ok Jeannie.. The pieces are coming together more and more each season about you and your swag. Growing up, being close with your Hispanic and Black neighbors.. ok, I see you! Very cool.. And that's what we need more of really to help with "racial" issues. People need to be exposed to different people in a positive way as early in life as possible.

It was sweet and positive, with all the negativity and violence going on, its refreshing to see this conversation also focuses on positives rather than negatives. I think a lot of people wanted to hear sob stories of racism and appeal for less racism, but others like me want to see messages like this, this is the realest you can get, highlighting that there are negatives while not ignoring the positives.....Not every one is bad, people are people..hopefully what we can all learn is to give people the benefit of a doubt...innocent until proven guilty...within our own race, and out of it..
Well said Loni. The community that different cultures have, I envy that. As per Loni's story about giving the nod to a member of her ethical community, of whom she didnt even know. I would love to walk into a room and connect with a group immediately like that. I think thats so neat. I personally am a variety of ethnicities and dont realte to just one. I miss out on that sense of community and belonging. Appreciate that if you have it because its so special in its own way!
This show has lost the REAL!!!!! It is tamed, ABC special, rehearsed TV answers! I miss Tamar, she said what you were thinking no matter how crass it came across.
Exactly, without Tamar we are missing that REAL moment. She always said something you were possibly thinking or wanted to say but thought it was too much for television. It made the table more well rounded. Everyone is not this straight laced and agreeable.
Ever since I was young I became aware of the "room scan". There are still places where I go and depending on the setting, I either scan the room for other black people, or other people of color in general, or for other women if the setting is predominantly comprised of men. Again, that depends on if it's a new setting for me usually.
personally as a young woman who was always the only black on the academic course i was on, it always affected my self esteem. I was the only black person in my grade to be in the "gifted" program. I often felt isolated from my culture in that experience and it lead to a lot of self hate and wanting to distance myself from the "black". It wasnt until, like most black people, i made the concious effort to overcome my self hate that happened as an effect of simply being surrounded by their standards and a very eurocentric education, after i mentally decided to love myself and my people, yeah sure everything gets better. I wish they would have stressed how important it would be for the man to instill in his daughter a love of self now so she doesnt go through what so many otger minorities go through. And i think out of them all, Loni wouldve known that
I feel like they missed his point completely. Like, he's scared about what his daughter is gonnna go thru bc of the color of her skin, especially considering the racial tension happening rn. Like, there's no way he can protect her from that. And they're all like "don't worry about it, she's only 3! she shouldn't be thinking about it, she's too young" but he never said anything about her worrying about it. Or they're like "I understand but it doesn't stop me from being who I am. I don't care about what people think about me, I just be true to myself" like that's all fine and dandy but what that gotta do with the 3yo? What that gotta do with his fears? She still gotta learn to be happy and not worry about what ppl gotta say about the color of her skin. It's harder for a kid to not worry about it than an adult.
They are so fake. I feel like they don't want to go deep into issues or they try to make it seem like issues don't exist. It's either the way they are as a panel or what they are directed to say/do. It's annoying though...the show shouldn't be named The Real if it aint gonna be REAL!!

History is weird like that, children don't see racism. BUT we teach history to keep it from repeating itself, and because without knowledge there is no way to control the flow of information or maybee more likely misinformation spreading from older generations. SO we do best in staying positive and teaching our children equality and that race doesn't really matter, only people who have been taught hate think so. No race is less or more than any other, however because of history we will have to face this or that sometimes and never be afraid to speak up for yourself because even if it is happening it's not ok. Genetics are such an interesting thing. Even though both of my parent's are latino, my father has white skin but is usually tan and my mother has light black skin. We are four siblings and I'm exactly in the middle with a medium skins tone with super dark brown eyes, I have one sister who's skin is much darker with hazel eyes and very textured hair, one is white with green eyes, and the other one is super white with greyish hazely eyes and her hair has natural blonde highlights. It's crazy

I agree with you. It's one of the reasons why I prefer the hot topic section of The View - they say all kinds of politically incorrect stuff and don't care. The Real is too soft at times.
It has a lot to do with the time slot and the network I think. It's usually, Mother's etc who are actually watching when it airs, and typically younger women are still in 9-5 schedule/school/not yet mothers with a more flexible schedule. Them being on the more conservative Fox network is why, in my opinion, they can discuss religion, and Jesus for however long they want (to each their own), and never discuss other religions, world topics, or heavy topics such as racism. Wendy Williams gets away with a lot more because she's just talking celebrity gossip, so it's frivolous compared to racial politics.

I love The Real but here is where I get my occasional laughs and fun and ironically...not really a place for a REAL convo. And I think that's something they should improve on. I totally understand what you mean, however, I have to disagree. Some of these other shows are not able to reach a wide audience like The Real does, some of these other shows simply do not have the platform to do so. They have the opportunity to raise awareness about racism and other deep-rooted topics. They simply can not raise a topic about race and brush it under the rug and act like racism does not exist. I personally feel that a lot of what they said is a fantasy we all will like to believe that being different is amazing all the time but the reality of life is that being different is hard, I don't think they are being "The Real" if they are not completely honest. If they want to have a light hearted show they can, they do not have to bring up race and stuff and don't call it The Real, but if they are going to talk about it talk about it properly and lets talk about the reality of racism in the 21st century.
I think that father was worried people (other children) may judge his daughter and preconceived notions about her because there is a lack of positive representation of black people in the media, and it's just for him to feel that way because it is true. Some races have more negative representation and some other races have more positive representation and it skews the way other people view other races and he does not want his daughter to be viewed negatively. unfortunately "The Real" did not raise that all.

Yes, I agree! In my opinion, growing up blind/ignoring the way most of the country sees people of color can be quite dangerous to the mind. Eventually a person of color will inevitably experience the negativity that's faced in life because of their race. This is just the truth, and the only way to change the truth is to be aware of it. I am about to turn 20, and as a child my parents slowly but surely let me know the kind of skin I was in and how some people would be opposed to it. They even shared with me the horrible things they've experienced as a Black woman and a Black man. Because of this, all of my trying times that i've faced were almost expected and I was basically ready for them because of the knowledge and love my family gave me at home. We don't want to inject our kids with fear or hate, but prepare them so they can become the change that our world is in need of.

They all had great points. But I think they missed the whole point.. Being confident as a women and being confident as a child are two different scenarios. And it is a huge difference between the two. I'm almost 20 years old and I am not as confident as I want to be but if I were to compare now to when I was a little girl, it's not even comparable. That's how much of a difference it is. This little girl isn't going to have the confidence that these women have because it takes time to gain.

I disagree I was more confident as a child than I am now as a 20 y/o woman. It's only when people started pointing things out about the way I look that I started to feel slightly insecure. And I agree with Loni, I'm not going to let my "blackness" or whatever get in the way of me doing what I want to do in life. I've always been in a predominant white surrounding so I'm used to being one of the few black people in the room. I also don't feel like my race is a primary concern for me.
+Johanna Figuerosa I also think people should be instilling values of self love and appreciation, into their kids. Teaching children to learn and appreciate their skin/race/culture when they're young is a lot easier to do so than when they're much older, because their mindset is harder to change. You shouldn't rely on other people to tell you/validate your self worth, that power should come from you and you alone. (As cheesy as that sounds) I really do believe in that!

How do you prepare the kids to properly deal with race issues? It takes a long time to develop the type of self confidence that they speak of. Kids won't have that time.

Idk why I can't reply directly to your comment with this new update... There are many examples but one relative to me would be hair. If I were to let my hair grow in its most natural state it would most likely form an Afro. Kinky hair is something with heavy ties to race. My hair grows that way. Culturally the Afro can be a fashion statement for some. For others a political statement if you look at the 70s. Then you see other segments of society that don't naturally have an Afro rocking it because it's a trend. American culture for example has influences of different races. Look at dark skin. It is something that people are born with. Some cultures use that as a class system for groups of people. Culture and Race are two different things but I was just pointing to the ties between the two.

Jollof is a senegalese traditional dish that spread through nomads and muslim empires and Plantain is something that grows naturally in subasaharan africa and many parts of asia that eat it too. However Africa is too diverse to just assume they all share the same cultures though some share similarities due to tribes belonging to more than one nation

I'm latina, but I remember when I first watched an episode of The Real and feeling like "woah!" amazed at the cast. Ironically less because of Adrianne being there (still love her), and more because of Jeannie. Because I recognized right away that there is definitely less Asian representation in the media, other than maybe news anchors compared to other minorities. I have a very mixed group of friends, and it's important to see all backgrounds getting their voice heard, and I have these conversations with them. I honestly had a visceral reaction of being delightedly surprised to have a real diverse cast, and not just putting 1 minority voice in the mix of 5 women and calling it a day.
I'm not saying you have to be angry but this was the most watered down conversation about race I've ever heard from a group of minority women. This is not a reflection of what I talk about with my sisters/friends. Especially in these times!

My whole life I was treated like I wasn't really Boricua bc I'm black and my Spanish wasn't great. People actually told me i was lying and that no Ricans look like me. Loni, I was with you until the last part of your statement. Most black people do not go around thinking that all people are bad and against us. For the most part we all are aware when we are the only black person anywhere but it is when the non-black people react or mistreat you, that is when we are clear that there is an issue for them. Your statement makes it seem like we are creating racism in our heads without justifiable cause. And I don't believe that as black people should down play the severity of racism in this country. You may not make it a part of you but a great number of people have no choice but to face the difficulties and pains of racism. The racial issue is not about the people who are accepting of race, it is about those who are not.
Great point👏🏾. I was the only black boy in my school when I was 11(i came from Ghana to Italy). I didn't notice any "differences" between me and them. But they let me know that I was different from them.(they were sitting on the older side of the class away from me) Black don't go around thinking that ppl are racist...but eventually the non-black will show their true colors.
It's crazy how people deny racism. It's freaking internalized and yes a 3 year old is aware. When I was five I knew my friend was white and I wasn't. And because she was white she was somehow more beautiful. Yes we do live in a racist society that has brainwashed us.

I would also add that their focus on culture does a little more harm than good. Linking race to culture can fuel stereotypes. People often categorise black people as a whole because of the actions, choices and preferences of some. I'm still trying to figure out what the 'black culture' consists of to be honest. I like classical music and enjoy ninteenth century American and British literature. To some that makes me less 'black'. Lol.

Loni is lost! Kids do know about race. A three year old white girl at my college (her mum brought her in, the mum was picking up some things) told a black young lady that she had "dirty ugly hair and dirty skin", then she said "my hair is beautiful and blonde". She was obviously taught to be vicious but seemed really happy and proud of herself for being nasty to someone.
The lady she said it to was a tall, slim, gorgeous, well put together, part time (Indian and black mix, dark skin) MODEL/ student (who all the adults could not take their eyes off). But that evil 3 year old girl didn't see any of the young ladies attributes she just saw black and thought it was ok to insult the poor lady. These are the people who grow up to be racist because they were taught it at home.
I feel like the ladies are too politically correct and vapid to cover topics such as what was presented in the man's letter!
I'm all here for when Tamara said "I'm not going to focus on what they say about me, I'm going to think of myself and try and be the best version of myself"...she so reminds me of myself...and I'm LOVING Tam and Loni's hair !!!!

In a way, it was. Mind you, I was about to get agitated as well at where the conversation seemed to be going when Loni started talking, but by the end, I realized that the approach they're taking for addressing racism in children isn't necessarily a bad approach for little humans who are just becoming acclimated into the world or even an adult who has been in this world and fed BS about minorities their whole lives and now thinks that we're all horrible human beings. At the crux of police brutality, racism in all its forms and prejudices and/or stereotypes is the idea that has been fed to the White masses that minority races are somehow inferior yet, if we as humans taught young children that we're all multifaceted and fully actualized beings that just have different cultures who all hold value, imagine how much more positive life could be. It wasn't the conversation I thought I wanted in the beginning, but they did have a point.

I completely agree! I have children who are the only black children in their class and I tell them everyday they are just as good and smart if not better than their classmates. I'm not teaching my children fear; I'm teaching those around my children to fear what they have in store. Peace

Just last year I started hanging out with a group of people who are now my ride or die and Im the one who just learned English and is fluent in Spanish and is an immigrant and before I was just so shy because I saw myself as inferior but now I can teach them what they want and they can teach me what I don't know and I just love it and they love me even more for being this special

Such a GREAT conversation! All four ladies had great points of view. And I'm glad Jeannie was able to (indirectly) shed light on why she's attracted black men -- not that she had to. Jeannie grew up in exactly the same neighborhood I did. My neighborhood's a mix of black, Hispanic, Caribbean families. Yet we have a Vietnamese/Puerto Rican family next door and a Cambodian family up the block. As a matter of fact, a Haitian family lives in the house that used to be owned by another Vietnamese family (who moved out in the middle of a blizzard - YIKES!). I'm so lucky to live in a culturally diverse neighborhood. Even the lone white girl down the street who lives with her black boyfriend and his entire family! Love her too! It's what makes my hood, My Hood!

This was a great topic and I agree with all of the co hosts. Kids at a young age should not worry about racism. Of course when the children get older, they will experience racism and then that is when you need to talk about it with them. But for now when the children are young, they just need to enjoy life and their childhood. Kids just needs to be themselves and don't let anyone define them.
Each of them made some great points. I will say that the man has a right to be concerned as I had my first incident with racism in kindergarten. He needs to support and love his little girl and just be prepared to answer questions honestly and age appropriately.

The human race is one. Humanity has been conditioned to believe we are all from different races to create division and justify violence committed throughout history. We are all different because every person is their own world but we also have so many things that make us alike. At the end of the day, we are all brothers and sister within the human race. And I hope one day people begin to realize this and put a stop to those who promote and benefit such a division among the human race. (I wonder who would benefit from racism and genocide...) I really hope one day people can get along. Look how diverse the girls are in ethnicity and how cool it is that they can come together to make such a nice show.

I’ve never seen the show but I’m loving these girls they are so real and honest and it’s refreshing.
I totally can relate to what Tamara experienced. As someone who is of mixed race it was very hard to be accepted to either race or group in school.
I know people say they did not dig dip, but i am very happy about how this conversation went. It was sweet and positive, with all the negativity and violence going on, its refreshing to see this conversation also focuses on positives rather than negatives.
I think a lot of people wanted to hear sob stories of racism and appeal for less racism, but others like me want to see messages like this, this is the realest you can get, highlighting that there are negatives while not ignoring the positives.....Not every one is bad, people are people..hopefully what we can all learn is to give people the benefit of a doubt...innocent until proven guilty...within our own race, and out of it..
Well said Loni. The community that different cultures have, I envy that. As per Loni's story about giving the nod to a member of her ethical community, of whom she didnt even know. I would love to walk into a room and connect with a group immediately like that. I think thats so neat. I personally am a variety of ethnicities and dont realte to just one. I miss out on that sense of community and belonging. Appreciate that if you have it because its so special in its own way!

Exactly, without Tamar we are missing that REAL moment. She always said something you were possibly thinking or wanted to say but thought it was too much for television. It made the table more well rounded. Everyone is not this straight laced and agreeable.

Ever since I was young I became aware of the "room scan". There are still places where I go and depending on the setting, I either scan the room for other black people, or other people of color in general, or for other women if the setting is predominantly comprised of men. Again, that depends on if it's a new setting for me usually.
personally as a young woman who was always the only black on the academic course i was on, it always affected my self esteem. I was the only black person in my grade to be in the "gifted" program. I often felt isolated from my culture in that experience and it lead to a lot of self hate and wanting to distance myself from the "black". It wasnt until, like most black people, i made the concious effort to overcome my self hate that happened as an effect of simply being surrounded by their standards and a very eurocentric education, after i mentally decided to love myself and my people, yeah sure everything gets better. I wish they would have stressed how important it would be for the man to instill in his daughter a love of self now so she doesnt go through what so many otger minorities go through. And i think out of them all, Loni wouldve known that
I feel like they missed his point completely. Like, he's scared about what his daughter is gonnna go thru bc of the color of her skin, especially considering the racial tension happening rn. Like, there's no way he can protect her from that. And they're all like "don't worry about it, she's only 3! she shouldn't be thinking about it, she's too young" but he never said anything about her worrying about it. Or they're like "I understand but it doesn't stop me from being who I am. I don't care about what people think about me, I just be true to myself" like that's all fine and dandy but what that gotta do with the 3yo? What that gotta do with his fears? She still gotta learn to be happy and not worry about what ppl gotta say about the color of her skin. It's harder for a kid to not worry about it than an adult.
