    I have to say this was a triumph, I love nearly every album here and I'm especially chuffed with your inclusion of Renaissance who are usually overlooked. It's like you've just mentioned all my friends!

    Epic List!
    I've never heard the Supertramp though, so I will have to check it out soon per your endorsement. I do love a lot of their music, just last year I was won over by Crime of the Century in fact.
    Yessongs
    Genesis Live
    Two for the Show'
    Live at Carnegie Hall
    Made in Japan and Song Remains the Same as well.
    My favorite live records overall are Jazz-Rock stuff:
    -Billy Cobham & George Duke - Live in Europe
    -Weather Report - Live and Unreleased
    and then anything Marillion and Kevin Gilbert have been in regular rotation for me with my massive fanboy bias I supppose.

    Love a lot of the live albums on your list, but my favourite live album is 801 Live. Not Prog, but the best live-sounding, atmospheric live album I've heard.

      801 sounds progressive to me. Maybe not Prog per se but really great record!!!

    • @TheProgCorner
      @TheProgCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Melancholic? Really? I try very hard to hide the darkness in my soul. Surprised to hear you detected it. I over compensate by being bubbly and “up” with a “fake it ‘til you make it” attitude. I can trick myself into being a well-adjusted person. Leave it to Wizardo to discern the truth!!! 👍❤️🤘

      @@TheProgCorner yes Scot, I think that the great difference between yours and other prog related channels, is that you lived everything that happenned during that time period. You experienced it, You breathed that air. And that characteristic translate into a melancholic feeling we all share. Thanks!

    Great stuff, I enjoyed the video plus I have a few things to check out now. Many people will moan that you missed something and yes, I am one of those! My fave band of all time has put out some amazing live albums. I am talking about often overlooked long-runners Pendragon. They are one of those bands that really excel live and their last 4 live albums are incredible - 'Concerto Maximo', 'Out of order comes chaos', 'Masquerade 20' and 'the first 40 years'. Anyway, very enjoyable so I'm subscribing!

  • @terryjohnson5275
    @terryjohnson5275 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great list, and nice to see GG get your no 1 spot, not to mention the Grobschnitt.
    I have to say I do love a good live album, even those that have been touched up a bit like Crimson's USA - though for Crim my favourite is their 4 CD Great Deceiver set.
    Being a big Barclay James Harvest fan I'd have to add in either their 'Live' album from 74 or their second Live Tapes from 78.
    As you have both Uriah Heep and Deep Purple in your list, and while not necessarily Prog as we would see it today I do think they were both progressive or had prog tendencies and deserve to be included, you could also add in Wishbone Ash with Live Dates and even stretch to any of teh three Blue Pyster Cult live albums On your feet, Some Enchanted Evening , Extra Terrestrial Live all have some fantastic proggy moments on them.
    If you include a bit of fusion I'd have to add in Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live; Al Di Meola's our De Force and Jean Luc Ponty's Live - all three of whichshould have been doubles - as should Focus Live at the Rainbow.
    I'd agree with Seconds Out over Live or 3 sides live - and how about any of the Steve Hackett live CDs released over the last few years.
    There are times though when I reach for Yesshows ahead of Yessongs - especially for the Moraz tracks.
    Rick Wakeman also had a double CD released some years ago that had his appearance on the UK's Old Grey Whistle Test (OGWT) with a live show from The Maltings alongside a BBC In concert recording from Hammersmith Odeon that has a selection from his albums up to No Earthly Connection - I wore out my tape of the OGWT show (taped from the TV speaker back when it was first aired) - so was glad to get an official release with a couple of tracks not broadcast - though I also have a bootleg with the remainder of the Hammersmith show and that recording really should have been relased as a live album at the time.

    • @TheProgCorner
      @TheProgCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Focus and Wishbone Ash got serious consideration but i didn’t even think about the mighty BÖC!!! On Your Feet Or On Your Knees should have been there. That record meant a lot to me growing up!!!

    @douglasgilbert174 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I totally agree with you upon your list Especially Van Der Graff Generator being number 7 and yes Number 3, what's interesting about that Album is you find it'd turn into a movie and see the sound from the movie, is better then the album. I saw Peter Hammil with gram Smith , a worthwhile concert only keyboards and violin, but good .

    Good morning Scot! Can't believe I missed this one? The store must of been out of Mountain Dew. Lol! You are very tame here. I don't like it! Lol! Once again you just couldn't put the boys at #1. Really thought while watching that you would have Genesis at the top. Yesterday was a very hard day. My sister Judy would of been 67. She went to heaven on 7-11-21. Very emotional day for me. She was a big Genesis fan. About 5 years ago she got a new stereo. I sent her like 10 Genesis cds. A few weeks later her place burned to the ground. She got out only wearing her robe. She lost everything! I miss her dearly!! Well only a few days left til Christmas. Bought a huge prime rib yesterday. I invited my brother and nephew from Wisconsin to come here to Michigan. I doubt they come. I can't travel anymore, too painful. So, I guess we have ProgRadio today and The Rock of Prog livestream on Sunday! The four faces of Jon. Lol. Peace my brother. Time for some breakfast. 👍☮️👑🎅🏻🤶🧑‍🎄🎁☃️🎄😎

    I could make an argument for Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus. It's a great live album and as prog as Dire Straits! And I love both of those albums! Overall I must admit I'm not the biggest fan of live albums. Particularly for prog bands. They're better in the studio IMO. I mean who wants to visualize Yesthongs? Sorry, I had to do it. Just joking. Yessongs was one of the first ten albums I ever owned and dear to my heart. So okay some live albums are classics! I actually have ten of your selections. I agree with you that both Supertramp and Dire Straits are “grey area” bands. But Kansas, on the other hand, are very much a Prog band - a Prog band with a couple hits. Deep Purple = Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, Dire Straights Rock...these two bands I'd never consider prog, would like to have seen Peter Gabriel Plays Live and/or Secrete World Live along with Genesis Live I don't care if you double dip those 3 PROG albums I mentioned are better than some of your picks any day. Totally agree with the Gentile Giant being on the list but maybe not the top, Yessongs I wouldn't rate #2 either not a very good recording it wouldn't make the list, Genesis and Peter Gabriel should be firmly at the top 1-4 which ever order you choose, King Crimson Meltdown Live In Mexico, Pink Floyd Pulse, ANY Steve Hackett LIVE album, Gentile Giant, 801 Live, The Pineapple Thief Where We Stood, Supertramp Live In Paris, UK Night After Night.
    Bottom line for me IF it is a bad recording it wouldn't make the list. And unfortunately a lot of the earlier '70's stuff falls prey to that...I wish were better recorded.

    Scot, I like you the first time I heard Genesis was their Genesis Live album and I was hooked, I'll never forget that experience being in the "import record" shop and looking for more Yes (my favorite band at the time) or Yes like music and while browzing the shop owner put Genesis Live on and got goose bumps immediately went to owner "who's this I love it" he said Genesis...Where's the album he pointed to the wall of new releases I went over and saw Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and Live...Which one is this he said the Live album...I was amazed, I'd never before heard a live album sound so good. Surprisingly I didn't buy it instead I bought Foxtrot...within a few weeks I had them all. The New Releases were "new" (to US) because they were imports he'd just received ALL four albums.Yes became my second favorite band.
    So, the Genesis LIVE album would have to be my first choice without a doubt...it changed my musical life from that day forward.

      Different Stages was released after Neil's daughter was killed in a car crash. I think it's a great set too. One disc was drawn from the Test For Echo tour, the other from the Counterparts tour. Throw in a Hammersmith show from the Farewell to Kings tour and that's the album. I love the Hammersmith disc. Cygnus X-1 is excellently done. The old show sounds great too. Better than All the Worlds a Stage sonically, for sure. It is possible that the band does not even like to think about this period in their history. It was a tragic time. Neil was reeling from the loss of his daughter and a year or so later his wife passed away because of illness. Geddy and Alex, plus the entire Rush family were profoundly affected by the these sad events as well.

    No bitching, because there is plenty of room for everbody's list.
    If my list would be a one entry only for every band, I would have to exclude "Genesis Live" and Yes' "Keys to Ascension 1&2" for the same reason, namely I cannot for the life of me exclude "Yessongs" and "Seconds Out". They are part of my DNA. The same goes for ELP's "Live at the Royal Albert Hall", which I adore. I must have "Welcome back my Friends..." on my list. I must even throw out "Pictures at an Exhibition"...and that's a tough one for me.
    About Floyd, then....I must include "Live at Pompeii", even if it's not really a proper official release.
    Gentle Giant on top? Why not? Come to think of it there is no live prog album that I know of that is definitively better, so I can go along with that.
    And yes, "Made in Japan" must be there.
    Haven't heard Transatlantic, Big Big Train or Flower Kings yet, but apart from "Alchemy" there is no album in your list that I wouldn't concider.
    Tell you a fun fact about Supertramp's first visit to Norway, though. They were booked to play at a venue on the Island of Karmøy outside the town of Haugesund. Now this was in the fall of 1971and they weren't very well known. This was on the west coast, in a pretty rural part of the country with a bit of a Bible belt dimension to it. Now, this booking was a classic mismatch, since the audience were the dressed up dancing kind and not at all ready for a proggy blues band.
    So they were booed during the first set and firmly told not play the second.
    Little did they know who they threw out.

      That reminds me of an early Moody Blues gig in LA where they had no idea what to think of the band and subsequently got kicked off stage. Nights In White Satin came out a week later…

      @@TheProgCorner I think it counts. Agree LZ aren't best categorised as prog, but TSRTS album ticks all the prog boxes: Long songs with episodic structures, fantasy/occult based lyrics, virtuoso solos and - in Dazed and Confused - innovative sonics (such as the violin bow section) that other bands (like sigur ros) would build a careers on. Perhaps time to give it another listen.

    Good list. Love the inclusion of "Vital" by Van der Graaf. The very best is missing though: "Theusz Hamtaahk Trilogy" by Magma from 2000. A triple CD with just one track each: "Theusz Hamtaahk", "Ẁurdah Ïtah" and "Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh". Magma at their very best. This album takes you straight to the planet Kobaïa. Absolutely brilliant performance of which a video version also exists. Here the link to "Theusz Hamtaahk"; you can skip the first 90 seconds that only show the band backstage and the audience entering.

      @@TheProgCorner Seeing them play their music live helps a lot in understanding it. Being at a Magma concert is actually a spiritual experience. It is not just we who say this; many people who have been at a Magma concert say the same.
      In 1998 we were at concert of Magma at the Leverkusener Jazztage (meaning "Jazz Days of Leverkusen"; Leverkusen is a German city near Cologne), a yearly festival that was originally meant for jazz only, but they opened up to other music too over the years (Van der Graaf Generator played there too once). It can be about 2 weeks long. That day 3 acts played. We forgot the name of the first act; it did not really impress us. Then came Mari Boine with her band. She is a shaman of the Sami, an ethnic group that lives in Norway, Sweden and Finland; she is from Norway. Her music was excellent, and normally we would have said "this was the concert of the day". But then came Magma and made her excellent performance sound mediocre; they were absolutely brilliant.
      When the concert was over a woman beside us who had never heard of Magma before and only was at the concert because it was a music festival stood there with eyes and mouth wide open and her arms limp at her side and slowly said "What the hell was that? That was out of this world"! She definitely had this spiritual experience. As did we, but we had already been at several Magma concerts, so for us it was not new to have this experience.
