👍 You make some very good points. I have a 20 gauge smoothbore flintlock similar to ones used successfully in New England from before the French & Indian War until well after the War of 1812 as the main family firearm. For the reasons you mentioned a good bow and some arrows might also be the preferred survival tool.

I enjoy my flintlock rifles, I have a Kibler Colonial American Longrifle 54-caliber 1-70 twist, along with a pedersoli Early American Jaeger rifle 54-caliber 1-22 twist (along with a conversion percussion lock. And also a true Hawken 54-caliber percussion rifle, built in 1970s from a parts kit from the Hawken shop while it was still located in St Louis Missouri. The Kibler and the Hawken are surprisingly accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I also have quite a few lever guns (Winchesters) 22lr, 30-30, 38-55, 30-40 Krag, 32-20, etc. I also cast my own bullets and reload my own ammunition, including black powder cartridges.

My papaw raised me and my cousins up on single shot shotguns and squirrel hunting with 32 and 36 caliber flintlocks. I left for the Marines for 12 years, was an Infantry Rifleman, and got into Recon before I got out. But with all my time spent with these highspeed weapons in combat, my heart belongs to a flintlock rifle. Just something beautiful about them.
another suggestion. pcp rifles, many precharged pneumatic rifles can take down anything short of a grizzly bear. all you need is an air pump either electric or manual for pneumatic arms ( able to pump up to 4500psi) . and lead projectiles. some pcp rifles can use lead ball or conical the same as blackpowder rifles.
He's not lying. I have a Pedersoli Brown Bess flintlock musket. I cast my own ball, knap my own flint/ cherts, make my own powder. That .75 calibre musket is an 11 gauge shotgun. Big ball for big game, shot for small game.

I have a TC 54 cal flintlock. Love it. If you run out of flint you can use chert, obsidian, or even quarts to create a spark., You can make your own powder if need be, and cast your own projectiles. I have cast for round ball and maxiballs

I am watching Lord Of The Rings and viewing this video between LOTR commercials. Yes I know its a fantasy fiction but couldn't help note that they all did pretty well with recurve bows and arrows. Good skill and tool to have when ammo runs out!

Nice video. I’ve never heard of anyone using a 22 magnum for tree’d bears. For years I didn’t think I needed a 22 mag but I found myself looking for a rifle to use for fall turkey hunting in PA. I wanted a 22 hornet but could not find one. I stumbled across an only JM stamped marlin bolt action 22 mag and I love it. Laws were changed so the pa fall season is shotgun only so I never got the chance to get a turkey with it but I’ve had it in the woods a few times. Whoever sold it probably misses it
You can buy dies to make #10 and #11 caps. The kit comes with a TON of makings for impact sensitive primer powder. I stamp my caps from rolled copper sheet, but you can use aluminum cans too. Probably get 100 caps or so from one can if you are really efficient. The roll copper works better because its significantly thinner and more maleable than aluminum. If you run out of primer compound for caps, you can make from strike anywhere match heads. Just crush the match heads into powder and mix them *carefully* with powdered red phosphorous from the striker strip on the box. I charge each cap with a flintlock pan primer tool and set/harden the compound with a single drop of high proof rubbing alcohol from an eyedropper. They work extremely well, they snap hot enough to ignite paper cartridges in my 52 Navy Colt. Thats a fine looking vintage TC Hawken sir. I have the cap gun version of that exact rifle, which I recently inherited.

A big advantage of a flintlock is that you don't need primers. Crush powder, prime the pan. You can prick a frizzen with a stone, no tools, for maintenance. You still need powder & lead.
My pick for a survival rifle is the m6 scout rifle 22lr over 410 with the some adapters it can fire 10 different combinations of ammo, plus in a pinch the 410 can fire black powder using cast 45 slug or ball.
The late step brother in Nova Scotia had but one gun, kinda sorta. He owned an H&R single shot set. It was orginally a .30-30 & 20 ga combo with separate detachable barrels. He later bought a solo 12 ga, swapped out that barrel with the 20, giving that one (the now new 20ga) to his son. Used it on everything from bear to ducks. Still, not my first choice. Would select a Marlin 336 and Mossberg 500 if were up to me.
I have that exact combo, stainless 336 in .30-30 and 12 gauge 500. I have a bunch of other guns but those two are my most used along with my old bolt action .22

Love your channel. I live in UK so can't get any guns for survival. I only have a .22 break barrel air gun, 2 80lb pistol crossbows. In case things go bad, at least i can hunt small game.
I have a kiblers colonial 58cal. Extra fancy maple. One of the best rifles I made and I have a 50cal smoothbore barrel for it as well for when shotgun season comes
I've got everything to make caps at least for my revolvers and looking to make some for my rifles as well though I have been wanting to get some flintlocks to add to my collection.
So for shorter term, I like to have an old military rifle, and make sure I got at least a box of ammo that I won’t touch. Old rifles like Mausers, enfields etc…will never breakdown. Ammo is hard to find though, so you really need to manage your supply. A cross bow, or any kind of bow is a good idea to be proficient with as well. But I have been thinking of a flintlock, for the very same reasons you mentioned.
I always thought an old military rifle like you said would be best... then I got to thinking that as far as hunting for food goes, it'd probably be way too powerful for most things a person would actually hunt (squirrels, birds). But great for protecting yourself. I'm starting to think an old military rifle and a .22 would be the way to go. I like your crossbow idea, never thought about that.
@@AJCzarkowski Yes, old military (ww2 era) are way too big for small game, but excellent for big game. Squirrels, birds etc can be taken with almost anything. Snares, traps, modern slingshots, hell I even saw a mini crossbow for squirrels! I like the idea of learning how to use silent methods like traps and sling shots, and bows for bigger game, but you really need to practice it yourself. They aren’t that easy to use. But those ww2 guns won’t break unless you try really hard. They’re also dirt cheap, because ammo can be hard to find and is expensive, unless you reload. I’m gonna get something more modern in 308, because primers have been unavailable since the Ukraine war.
I would mostly agree but I prefer the CZ 457 Bolt Action. Even MORE reliable-accurate-cleanable-bulletproof. Mine will last generations beyond me and drive tacks! ChangeMyMind
Up here in PA flintlocks are huge. We have a flintlock only deer season that starts the day after Christmas. It's my favorite time to hunt. City slickers tend to stay home. I usually get a deer or two every year. Come on up, it's too much fun.
Ive had alot of firearms in my life but just one for a survival situation be tough . I always like to plan on rifle/sidearm combo. That being said a lever 22lr carbine for shtf might be the best option.
@@chasebrown1857 thats a nice classic firearm. No magazine needed which i like and that’s why I chose a lever gun. But, it’s blow back design when that’s get gunked up or dirty might not work as well or reliably as a lever. Plus 22 can carry 1000 rounds no problem.
22 LR can be found for 8 cents a round right now. On the site I just looked at, 6300rds of 22 LR for $478.80, free shipping. 22 magnums can be had for .28 - .36 cents a round depending on manufacture and weight. You can buy enough to basically to last you a life time for not that much money and you wouldn't have to worry about finding stuff to make flint or black powder or having lead to make bullets. I do agree that a person needs survival skills ( Living off the land ) in case SHTF and I don't think we are that far from that situation. I would suspect that close to 99% of the people here in the USA, even the one's who live in rural areas don't have the skills to survive for too long unless you're a quick study. Just my .02 cents.
I have a .40 cal. Flintlock I absolutely love it, I also have a single shot 12 gauge with choke tubes, and a possibles bag full of Short Lane adapters with that one shotgun I can fire 12, 16, 20, 410, 22, 38 special, 9 mm, 380, and I have the 209 adapter that allows me to use it as a blackpowder shotgun. I have been buying 209 primers and I have 3000 stuck back and about 2000 #10, and #11 P.C’s along with 12 pounds of black powder 4F, 3F, and 2F I also have my blackpowder revolvers with bullet mounds for those as well. Stock up now while you can!!
This is well thought out and clearly based on experience. Complete breakdown of society scenarios are interesting mental exercises. But, I always keep coming back to a brick of 22 long rifle and a Ruger, 10/22. In this case a bolt action was mentioned, and 22 WMR ammo. A CZ 457 with a Leuopld 2x7 rimfire scope, total cost less than $900.00. A person should probably invest at least as much in ammo as was spent on the rifle, so that would be 4000 rounds of 22 WMR for approximately $1,000.00. Total less than $2,000.00. At 2 rounds per week that’s almost 40 years of ammo. This actually is a pretty deluxe weapon and cartridge. A person could accomplish this for less than half of this cost with, for example, a couple of 10/22’s and 22lr. An additional advantage of a more modern weapon is ease of use. It would be really beneficial if everyone in your family, from young children to the elderly are able to use it. How long are we going to be hunter gatherers? Without modern medicine, forty years would probably be a lifetime. I’ve hunted to supplement my family’s meat. My children are adults now, and I’m an old man, but my experience leads me to say, without modern agriculture, and modern medicine, 4 years would probably be a lifetime. This isn’t meant to be an argument, just additional thoughts.
After re-reading my post above, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m no fun at all 😢😂 I’m going to go get my two muzzle loaders out of the gun cabinet right now. They’re cap locks, 36 caliber and 50 caliber rifles, but at the first opportunity I’ll lay in a supply of caps 👍

Ys wnd if you practice with snap caps reloading of a SS 12 can be done fast. My old H&R had shell ejector so the drill was shoot, dropbarrel. Load, close,cock shoot. I got to doing it just under 3 seconds. That's fast. Especially if you're shooting from cover. If you're competent you're not a helpless victim
Interesting video…I enjoyed it I have lots of guns but hunt mostly today with Flintlocks…Deer and squirrels with 20 gauge custom chief grade smooth bore. Ducks with an original English double barrel flint 20 For most people I think they would be better served with a smooth bore I know some people make their own black powder but how many source all the materials themselves? I imagine not many I believe in stockpiling and of course have much ammo put up I started years ago buying a brick of .22s every time I went food shopping at Walmart. Think it was $13 a brick and money saved on groceries I have about 40,000 rounds now, and I sold some back when prices where crazy. I used to make 18th century knives and axes for a living
Small game hunting can be done very cheaply with a .22 magnum springer airgun, very reliable and ammo can be stocked by the thousands for just a few dollars. It is also relatively silent.for bear encounters carry a good handgun. Flintlocks are great also.
@@mike451 I have a whole collection of airguns, my favorites are a 20 Benjamin blue streak one with a peep sight, one with a scope, a .22 Hatsan model 95, and a .30 cal hatsan carnivore breakbarrel. It has amazing power 30 footpounds, 44,75 grain pellet. Spent a little more have a weihrauch or Beeman R1 and groups tighten to ragged holes with a gun built for a lifetime.
I agree but it is hard to find lead and powder now a days. I need to grind my own 4f out of 2f so I can shoot my flint lock. Let face it stock up now on what you can because it might not be around later!

Yes, flintlock weapons are good for survival, but I think for this purpose weapons with gunpowder ignited by a fire piston are better. Something like a Daisy V/L in a larger caliber
I was through Indonesia 40 years ago and locals still hunting with muzzle loaders and shotguns with local made powder and shot, nit because shortage of old ww2 rifles just because they didnt want to waste money on ammo
I do like that my Wolf will be chugging along for a few years after I run out of CARTRIDGES for anything else but bullets are useless in a CARTRIDGE gun unless already loaded into a CARTRIDGE! It was never correct to say “bullets” to mean loaded ammunition and it never will be. Now as far as the 30-30 goes get you a few base chemicals now and you can reload your own primers for it, until you wear out the primer cups anyway. Cheap chemicals and free information. Use that homemade primer mix and homemade powder and home cast bullets lubed up with paraffin and lard or paraffin and Crisco and you’re in business. Requires the same amount of diligent cleaning after every time you shoot it whether 1 shot or 100 shots
What would be a good maker model for this type of rifle I have a brake barrel 22 but only good for small game I prefer trapping but this video makes sense I would like to look more in to this o save lot of my pellet so I could melt down a pour for flintlock any thoughts would be appreciated
I'm a big Fan of the Marlin model 60. Great dependable gun. Also, when SHTF scenario is on your doorstep, might I suggest a mid level PCP air rifle. The AEA ZEUS is a .72 caliber pre charged pneumatic air rifle that can take down Buffalo. There are several smaller caliber guns out there from .22 to .357 that use slugs, Air is free and lead is cheap

I cast my own ball, knap my own flint/ cherts, make my own powder. That .75 calibre musket is an 11 gauge shotgun. Big ball for big game, shot for small game.

Good video and content. The only issue.. in a very short while if things were to hit the fan would be that the wildlife will disappear shortly after…. Too many people depending on too many resources brought in from outside the US…. Fish will go quick too….

I have a TC 54 cal flintlock. Love it. If you run out of flint you can use chert, obsidian, or even quarts to create a spark., You can make your own powder if need be, and cast your own projectiles. I have cast for round ball and maxiballs

I am watching Lord Of The Rings and viewing this video between LOTR commercials. Yes I know its a fantasy fiction but couldn't help note that they all did pretty well with recurve bows and arrows. Good skill and tool to have when ammo runs out!

Nice video. I’ve never heard of anyone using a 22 magnum for tree’d bears. For years I didn’t think I needed a 22 mag but I found myself looking for a rifle to use for fall turkey hunting in PA. I wanted a 22 hornet but could not find one. I stumbled across an only JM stamped marlin bolt action 22 mag and I love it. Laws were changed so the pa fall season is shotgun only so I never got the chance to get a turkey with it but I’ve had it in the woods a few times. Whoever sold it probably misses it

You can buy dies to make #10 and #11 caps. The kit comes with a TON of makings for impact sensitive primer powder. I stamp my caps from rolled copper sheet, but you can use aluminum cans too. Probably get 100 caps or so from one can if you are really efficient. The roll copper works better because its significantly thinner and more maleable than aluminum. If you run out of primer compound for caps, you can make from strike anywhere match heads. Just crush the match heads into powder and mix them *carefully* with powdered red phosphorous from the striker strip on the box. I charge each cap with a flintlock pan primer tool and set/harden the compound with a single drop of high proof rubbing alcohol from an eyedropper. They work extremely well, they snap hot enough to ignite paper cartridges in my 52 Navy Colt. Thats a fine looking vintage TC Hawken sir. I have the cap gun version of that exact rifle, which I recently inherited.

It’s called a 22 and 308 bolt actions. One for small critters and the other for everything else.

A big advantage of a flintlock is that you don't need primers. Crush powder, prime the pan. You can prick a frizzen with a stone, no tools, for maintenance. You still need powder & lead.

My pick for a survival rifle is the m6 scout rifle 22lr over 410 with the some adapters it can fire 10 different combinations of ammo, plus in a pinch the 410 can fire black powder using cast 45 slug or ball.

The late step brother in Nova Scotia had but one gun, kinda sorta. He owned an H&R single shot set. It was orginally a .30-30 & 20 ga combo with separate detachable barrels. He later bought a solo 12 ga, swapped out that barrel with the 20, giving that one (the now new 20ga) to his son. Used it on everything from bear to ducks. Still, not my first choice. Would select a Marlin 336 and Mossberg 500 if were up to me.

As far as the percussion cap shortage, make sure to get primer adapters for your muzzle loaders. Primers have a longer shelf life anyway.
I have a kiblers colonial 58cal. Extra fancy maple. One of the best rifles I made and I have a 50cal smoothbore barrel for it as well for when shotgun season comes

So for shorter term, I like to have an old military rifle, and make sure I got at least a box of ammo that I won’t touch. Old rifles like Mausers, enfields etc…will never breakdown. Ammo is hard to find though, so you really need to manage your supply. A cross bow, or any kind of bow is a good idea to be proficient with as well. But I have been thinking of a flintlock, for the very same reasons you mentioned.
I always thought an old military rifle like you said would be best... then I got to thinking that as far as hunting for food goes, it'd probably be way too powerful for most things a person would actually hunt (squirrels, birds). But great for protecting yourself. I'm starting to think an old military rifle and a .22 would be the way to go. I like your crossbow idea, never thought about that.
@@AJCzarkowski Yes, old military (ww2 era) are way too big for small game, but excellent for big game. Squirrels, birds etc can be taken with almost anything. Snares, traps, modern slingshots, hell I even saw a mini crossbow for squirrels!
I like the idea of learning how to use silent methods like traps and sling shots, and bows for bigger game, but you really need to practice it yourself. They aren’t that easy to use. But those ww2 guns won’t break unless you try really hard. They’re also dirt cheap, because ammo can be hard to find and is expensive, unless you reload. I’m gonna get something more modern in 308, because primers have been unavailable since the Ukraine war.
I would mostly agree but I prefer the CZ 457 Bolt Action. Even MORE reliable-accurate-cleanable-bulletproof. Mine will last generations beyond me and drive tacks! ChangeMyMind

Up here in PA flintlocks are huge. We have a flintlock only deer season that starts the day after Christmas. It's my favorite time to hunt. City slickers tend to stay home. I usually get a deer or two every year. Come on up, it's too much fun.

Ive had alot of firearms in my life but just one for a survival situation be tough . I always like to plan on rifle/sidearm combo. That being said a lever 22lr carbine for shtf might be the best option.

@@chasebrown1857 thats a nice classic firearm. No magazine needed which i like and that’s why I chose a lever gun. But, it’s blow back design when that’s get gunked up or dirty might not work as well or reliably as a lever. Plus 22 can carry 1000 rounds no problem.

22 LR can be found for 8 cents a round right now. On the site I just looked at, 6300rds of 22 LR for $478.80, free shipping. 22 magnums can be had for .28 - .36 cents a round depending on manufacture and weight. You can buy enough to basically to last you a life time for not that much money and you wouldn't have to worry about finding stuff to make flint or black powder or having lead to make bullets. I do agree that a person needs survival skills ( Living off the land ) in case SHTF and I don't think we are that far from that situation. I would suspect that close to 99% of the people here in the USA, even the one's who live in rural areas don't have the skills to survive for too long unless you're a quick study. Just my .02 cents.

I have a .40 cal. Flintlock I absolutely love it, I also have a single shot 12 gauge with choke tubes, and a possibles bag full of Short Lane adapters with that one shotgun I can fire 12, 16, 20, 410, 22, 38 special, 9 mm, 380, and I have the 209 adapter that allows me to use it as a blackpowder shotgun. I have been buying 209 primers and I have 3000 stuck back and about 2000 #10, and #11 P.C’s along with 12 pounds of black powder 4F, 3F, and 2F I also have my blackpowder revolvers with bullet mounds for those as well. Stock up now while you can!!

This is well thought out and clearly based on experience. Complete breakdown of society scenarios are interesting mental exercises. But, I always keep coming back to a brick of 22 long rifle and a Ruger, 10/22. In this case a bolt action was mentioned, and 22 WMR ammo. A CZ 457 with a Leuopld 2x7 rimfire scope, total cost less than $900.00. A person should probably invest at least as much in ammo as was spent on the rifle, so that would be 4000 rounds of 22 WMR for approximately $1,000.00. Total less than $2,000.00. At 2 rounds per week that’s almost 40 years of ammo. This actually is a pretty deluxe weapon and cartridge. A person could accomplish this for less than half of this cost with, for example, a couple of 10/22’s and 22lr. An additional advantage of a more modern weapon is ease of use. It would be really beneficial if everyone in your family, from young children to the elderly are able to use it. How long are we going to be hunter gatherers? Without modern medicine, forty years would probably be a lifetime. I’ve hunted to supplement my family’s meat. My children are adults now, and I’m an old man, but my experience leads me to say, without modern agriculture, and modern medicine, 4 years would probably be a lifetime. This isn’t meant to be an argument, just additional thoughts.
After re-reading my post above, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m no fun at all 😢😂 I’m going to go get my two muzzle loaders out of the gun cabinet right now. They’re cap locks, 36 caliber and 50 caliber rifles, but at the first opportunity I’ll lay in a supply of caps 👍

Ys wnd if you practice with snap caps reloading of a SS 12 can be done fast. My old H&R had shell ejector so the drill was shoot, dropbarrel. Load, close,cock shoot. I got to doing it just under 3 seconds. That's fast. Especially if you're shooting from cover. If you're competent you're not a helpless victim

Small game hunting can be done very cheaply with a .22 magnum springer airgun, very reliable and ammo can be stocked by the thousands for just a few dollars. It is also relatively silent.for bear encounters carry a good handgun. Flintlocks are great also.

@@mike451 I have a whole collection of airguns, my favorites are a 20 Benjamin blue streak one with a peep sight, one with a scope, a .22 Hatsan model 95, and a .30 cal hatsan carnivore breakbarrel. It has amazing power 30 footpounds, 44,75 grain pellet. Spent a little more have a weihrauch or Beeman R1 and groups tighten to ragged holes with a gun built for a lifetime.
I agree but it is hard to find lead and powder now a days. I need to grind my own 4f out of 2f so I can shoot my flint lock. Let face it stock up now on what you can because it might not be around later!

Yes, flintlock weapons are good for survival, but I think for this purpose weapons with gunpowder ignited by a fire piston are better. Something like a Daisy V/L in a larger caliber
If you plan on depending on a flintlock, It would be a good idea to have a extra lock for back up.

I do like that my Wolf will be chugging along for a few years after I run out of CARTRIDGES for anything else but bullets are useless in a CARTRIDGE gun unless already loaded into a CARTRIDGE! It was never correct to say “bullets” to mean loaded ammunition and it never will be. Now as far as the 30-30 goes get you a few base chemicals now and you can reload your own primers for it, until you wear out the primer cups anyway. Cheap chemicals and free information. Use that homemade primer mix and homemade powder and home cast bullets lubed up with paraffin and lard or paraffin and Crisco and you’re in business. Requires the same amount of diligent cleaning after every time you shoot it whether 1 shot or 100 shots

Also, when SHTF scenario is on your doorstep, might I suggest a mid level PCP air rifle.
The AEA ZEUS is a .72 caliber pre charged pneumatic air rifle that can take down Buffalo.
There are several smaller caliber guns out there from .22 to .357 that use slugs, Air is free and lead is cheap
