- One of my favorite series of the past decade is Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal. The amazing TV show was adapted from the Thomas Harris books with Mads Mikkelsen playing serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Hugh Dancy playing FBI special investigator Will Graham. While most shows are easy to describe and fit neatly into a box like a procedural, sitcom, or drama, over the course of the three seasons it aired on NBC, Hannibal consistently defied expectations and did things I never thought you could do on network TV. By the time NBC started airing season three, I thought I was watching a cable series that someone managed to get by the network censors. While the past decade has seen many incredible achievements on the small screen, if you’ve never seen Hannibal, I promise it’s absolutely worth your time.
With the entire series now streaming on Netflix, I recently landed an extended and exclusive interview with Bryan Fuller and Hugh Dancy. During our ninety-minute conversation, the two started by answering a few fun questions like first crushes, favorite rides at Disneyland, and TV series they’d like to guest star on/guest write. Soon after we jumped into Hannibal and they shared so many great behind-the-scenes stories it would be impossible to list it all here. But if you’re curious what it was like writing the series, casting Mads Mikkelsen, why Clarice and The Silence of the Lambs storyline was never on the show, who David Bowie would have played, which gory event was blocked by NBC’s standards and practices, and Dancy revealing the unbelievable thing he can’t believe they got away with on Hannibal, you’re in the right place.

I heard he doesn't want the fans to pay for it or ask for money and I agree. I mean, I know people mean well but I think that's a bit much and Im honestly hopeful that Netflix is going to make a fourth season.
Mads Mikkelsen was absolutely amazing in this role. He actually topped what Sir Anthony Hopkins did. Very book accurate and completely unique at the same time. Mads is Hannibal Lecter now, at least for me. That is how I imagine him 🙌
Mads had to grow on me, but Hopkins tops him. Don't get me wrong I very much enjoyed Mads portrayal by season 2, but he's a bit stiff in his charm. He's a high end marble as opposed to Hopkins' silk. Hopkins was just effortless, he could switch between charming and terrifying so fast....the dead eyes of a shark, the smile of a wolf. Different strokes and all, but c'mon...Hopkins IS Hannibal.
TOTALLY AGREE! IMO Mads is the closest Hannibal to the book and that's just how I always imagine him to be! ❤
Joe Brown disagree bud. I would actually take most of your assessment of Hopkins and apply it to Mads IMO. And I am someone who was expecting to hate the show going into it, because I grew up watching Silence of the Lambs all the time, and could not bring myself to see anyone else as Lecter. But it just happened lol. I respect it though, I still love Hopkins, they are almost neck and neck to me.

I was skeptical to say the least of Mads when I started...but he eventually opened up a bit towards the end of season 1 for me and something did click. I do see what you do. I just prefer my Hopkins. But internet discussions always end in respectful disagreements, far be it from us to break that hotstreak now.

NBC didn't want a European actor to portray a European character. Wow, a very American approach. Anyway, Mads was truly a gift in any sense of the word. He became the epitome of elegance the creators chose as the main visual concept in terms of appearance, charisma and his micro expressive acting. I can't say that John Cusack or Hugh Grant possess the same energy when acting. Cusack is kinda forgettable for me, even though he's not a bad actor and was in many good projects, he just doesn't leave a lasting impression, which can be ok for some characters but not for Hannibal. Hugh Grant is memorable and his recent choices of roles only prove it, but his look and his acting just don't fit Hannibal. Some of the scenes would look plain comical or creepy. Not to mention, we wouldn't get such mind-blowing chemistry we got with Hugh and Mads, which is the strongest point in the show imo.
Mads and hugh are just perfect for the roles tbh.
I mean, Cox and Hopkins both played American (accents at least) for their portrayals of Hannibal, I'll bet NBC didn't even realize the character was European.

There are certain murder scenes that were creepy, and hard to look at it! But Mads was an absolutely wonderful choice for Hannibal. Also the thing that NBC did not really do their research on Mads credentials, he is absolutely talented. The angle he brought to Hannibal is absolutely fascinating

Mads is such an exceptional actor. I was absolutely enthralled with his performance as hannibal. He completely and utterly encapulated every single intricate detail of hannibals complex, psychological landscape. An absolute gem! Hugh dacy as will graham was also another outstanding choice! He presented the internal conflict of his character in such subtle but memorable nuances that left me completely invested in his characters development. Together these twos chemistry went beyond the simple and typical rules of romance and attraction. Two highly intellient individuals seeking a higher level of psychological understanding that couldnt be ascertained by others. Truly two very remarkable characters that i would give anything to see them grace our screens again!

Can I just mention how incredible it is to hear an actual creator of a very successful show go into extensive depth and detail over such great questions and comments? He is so in touch with how the fans feel and his vision for the show. Every interview I’ve seen gives off the feeling that Bryan is very much present in the moment, attentive, and wanting to always give the fanbase insight into the show in it’s entirety. And I felt the same with Hugh’s answers. Talk about two people who care about the project that’s been created and the audience it has been created for.
I hope Netflix buys Hannibal. I want a season 4 please!

Best show I’ve ever seen: gorgeously shot, smartly written and excellently acted. The score compliments the show perfectly, the art department is insanely talented. I cannot think of one flaw in the entire show. The fact that they can create such grotesque, violent scenarios and find the visual poetry and resonance in them is amazing.
I literally watched Hannibal for the 4th time this past week, all within a few days. And it was like watching it for the first time because of how layered that script is. Really hoping for season 4!!!

The chemistry between Will and Hannibal is exquisite. Mads and Hugh are amazing actors at portraying those characters genuinely. Please bring it back, with them both. Amazing interview. This show definitely has a cult following and will be remembered. Mads is an amazing actor it's a shame people with that much talent arnt taken seriously on the American side. I'm glad all the fans got this even after the show has been done for years.

Hugh dancy is a really great actor. I wish I could see him take on a project similar to the movie “Mandy” or indie horror films. He is a master of setting a tone to a scene that few have.

My goodness, NBC's Hannibal is one of the best shows ever made. I don't think they realize how lucky they got: with having Bryan Fuller on board and such splendid cast. People still talk about this show years after it ended, which is a huge complement in itself, but also, there are so many shows being produced that are so bad... Quantity over quality, that's what it is. And this is also another reason to just respect any director's autonomy: the really good ones KNOW what they are doing... Same with Dune; I'm so glad Villeneuve just had a vision and didn't allow anyone to mess with his vision of how Dune should look like.
I love that Mason Verger scene. Also, I am so glad you asked about Michael Pitt not being in season 3. I was always so curious why he didn't return. It's a shame. I would have loved to see his take on Mason in season 3
I've been watching the shit out of Hannibal on the UK version before it hit the US one. I also own it on DVD but the ratings on netflix... they're important to show interest!
I love hearing Bryan talk - he has such a expressive, colorful way with words. I had so many shows lined up for bingeing but now this show has ruined me and I know that nothing will ever be as great as this - all I have left now are fanfics and innumerable rewatches to fill the gaping Hannibal shaped hole in my heart.
One of the fascinating aspects of them speculatively putting Will on the spectrum is that recent research findings in high functioning autism, specifically what would formerly have been classified as Aspergers, have found that rather than having deficits in emotional empathy as had been believed, there is actually a hyper intensity of empathy that the individual struggle with trying to separate their emotional experiences with those of others, which creates the need for the social withdrawal that is typical of those on the spectrum.

In all seriousness, this remains my favorite show I’ve ever watched start to “finish”. I would KILL to see more of this story. Every part of it is beautiful and incredibly well crafted. The performances are remarkable and the plot was always inventive and enthralling. I hope everyone involved knows how much it would mean to the viewers to see this show continue.

Watched Hannibal for the first time last month and I cant remember the last time I fell in love with a show so hard.
"They were right for Their reasons, but Wrong for My reasons" - basically every actually Creative artist in Hollywood/American audio/visual media regarding people who are more interested in money than compelling the masses with daring stories.

Hannibal still has so much potential, so many new fans have been pulled in through Netflix or Hulu and so many more would join if the show got the opportunity to go on. As farfetched as it may seem, i still hold hope for it to continue.
I love Hannibal as much as any person with taste! Writing, the acting, the tension and formation of the relationship between Will and Hannibal, etc etc but I'll always love how differently formed Bryan wrote Will Graham vs the book and the Manhunter film(which i did NOT like im sorry but i did love brian cox and i do laugh hearing the obvious 80s lines in s3) but i love how with hugh and Bryan they were able to write such a vulnerable and growing and complex character especially with the cliches of masculinity in American media like i can talk forever about it! Also Hugh is so gorgeous im like 😔😔😔😔😔

I've watched Hannibal so many times. I basically have it on repeat on Netflix. I'd love more episodes, but as it is; it's perfect. Additional seasons would just be icing on an extremely filling cake.

One of the thing I knew from Hannibal cast is, their cast is amazing also is the director, 'cuz how can the fandom of the series story keeps going for many years after the end of last season fans still desire to see it and hope that one day they will get to see it happen again. But for some reason I think that going with the concept of the tv show only takes a lot of risk, I think the income and attention of people for the story should keep flowing regularly, right now it's not, the more attention and income they can keep them going steadily the more the story can keep going even after time pass
So right now they should start to get more of people's attention for real.

I’ve commented it on the reunion video but I’ll say it here too - I recently visited my mum and started watching the show with her. She watched all three seasons within a week. Sometimes six episodes a day (and mind you she was working full time for most of it)! I think that says a lot about how exceptional this show is. And she didn’t even watch it in English (which I think takes away from the experience quite a bit).
I try to watched it In my native language and it sucks lol the dialogue sounds so pretentious and it just sounds weird. I know the dialogues are supposed to be pretentious but it was too much and I just prefer their natural voices. My mom watched it with me once but it was too violent for her, sadly. And I tried some friends to watch it but I guess it's too weird for them.

Thanks for asking about the music. I absolutely love scores and Hannibals is absolutely incredible. I am a music maker myself and my absolute dream job would be to make the music and sound design for this show. In the opening credits, I swear they use the sound of a sizzling fry pan weaving in and out. There are so many things like that... the chimes when alana falls through the window... there was some stuff that reminded me of the clatter type sounds in the shining. Exactly what I would love to, and do love to do.
