    RECAP:
    - Restore gut microbiome.
    - Safe deliberate cold exposure 1-3 minutes or upto 10 if you can handle it. The temperature should make you want to get out but you know you're safe staying in.
    - Drink water or optimally drink electrolytes whilst drinking, or if you don't do that, drinking them before bed and/or when waking will be fine.

    I’m only 32, but my body no longer seems to process alcohol the way it used to. Not only are the hangovers vicious and last up to two days, but the “drunk” feeling in the moment is no longer enjoyable. It used to alleviate my social anxiety, and make me feel happy/excited. Now it just makes me feel sleepy, dizzy, and sick to my stomach. It doesn’t seem to matter if I’m having 1-2 drinks, or 6. I feel sick, sleepy and gross in the moment, and am rendered completely useless the next day with migraines, acid reflux, aches and pains, etc. I’m essentially experiencing all of the side effects of the poison, without any of the benefits. I have stopped drinking completely for this reason, although I do wish I was able to have a couple drinks every now and again without having to feel terrible, and lose an entire day after. Oh well, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

      You’re about the same age as me and in addition for the fact we’re both here says a lot lol . I’m assuming our story may be similar, me I started drinking in high school around 16, after graduating ton of partying until we turned 21 and that’s when drinking became “less fun” (the illegal factor) but long story short I’ve drank everyday to every other day since . So for the past maybe 3 years i started noticing the changes, at one point I could hang til 2 am completely shit face and work the next morning now I cannot stand a hangover and have to take breaks between days. Truly thought I’d always be the lil dude to outdrink everyone around but goddamn it’s not the same . Still love drinking, drunkish now (3:52am) but somethings gotta give 😅😢 not proofreading sorry if some doesn’t make sense 😂🤭

      I am twice your age. I understand you. The suffering worsens with age. I wanted to say that so you would know there's a good chance it will beat you up more as you get older. That's why I am watching videos like this. To see if there is a solution, I can't find a solution that works I may just give up on drinking. I still get pleasure from drinking at the moment but the next day the suffering makes the fun part not worth it. I will have to find a solution or stop.

      @@lindaluckett7790 is it still considered alcoholism if I only drink once every few months? I also only have one or two drinks when I do. It seems more likely I’ve developed some sort of allergy, or perhaps my body just knows the party is over and it’s telling me to never drink again 😂

    The cold exposure is so true! Being from South Africa, our holidays were always in beautiful beach places and nature areas. when I was younger I would go for a night out during the holidays. The next day we would all meet to go to a waterfall, the ocean or some cold water source because the heat of the day and the hangover wouldn’t mix well. After the swim the hangover would be much better. So interesting to hear the science behind it thank you Andrew!

    I was under the impression hangovers are at their worst in the morning because the liver has converted the ethanol to oxidative byproducts during the the night, and switches to the methyl/ formyl products by morning. This creates formaldehyde and the majority of the pain (Along with all the other factors).
    Having a beer in the morning puts ethanol back into ADH as the preferred substrate (instead of MeOH), so there is some pain relief while ADH churns away on its least preferential substrate in the background.
    I can understand if you don't want to get into these details, but this is very old kinetic information.

    So there’s some studies refuting that alcohol is a diuretic and that dehydration is a symptom of hangovers. Your mouth is dry the next day because the alcohol is literally drying out the mucus membranes in your mouth. They found that people had normal electrolyte levels the next day.. just think, a hangover is nothing like being stranded in the desert for four days with no water. And for all the urinating you do, they found it’s about the same as if you drank a similar amount of water.. think 12oz beer and 12oz water

    • @mr_green33
      @mr_green33 ปีที่แล้ว

      vasoconstriction from cold exposure is your bodies natural response to adapt to the change in body temperature. the thing is, there are a number of different mechanisms that are activated from cold exposure, all of which aren't induced by poison. instead those mechanisms are induced by your bodies reaction to different stimuli. long story short, when vasoconstriction in your brain is caused by poison it's going to lead to a headache because, well it's poison. take my statement with a grain of salt of course as I'm not a scientist.

    • @WideAwakeHuman
      @WideAwakeHuman ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most likely because cold exposure results in cutaneous vasoconstriction while alcohol results in cerebral vasoconstriction... But idk for sure. Also, cold exposure has vastly more effects than just vc so those other effects are likely responsible for the headache relief

    So, @ 2:24 what if you suffer from insomnia and sometimes you need a few drinks to actually get some sleep?

    • @TimJohnston911
      @TimJohnston911 ปีที่แล้ว

      From my experience, the alcohol creates insomnia. Get 30 minutes of good exercise each day, turn the lights down one hour before bed, don’t eat anything three hours before bed, and abstain from alcohol for 30 days. Try it as an experiment and see how your insomnia is doing.

      I was 8 days into my withdrawal with not a second of sleep. Full blown DTs for days. I caved and pounded 2 tall steel reserves, just so I could sleep. Hell

      Well I had been drinking 5 of those 24 oz 8% ones, without eating food for days and days. Only to crash and withdrawal bad as hell, then to feel better 5 days later. Just to repeat it all over again.
      So after all the years of doing that every fuckin week, I’m assuming that when I got deathly ill, and I just couldn’t drink at all, like full rejection, my body was like yep you’ve got alcohol induced insomnia. I went fuckin nuts, and it was the most painful thing ever. I sipped on those two steel reserves for a few hours until they were gone, but dude that’s all it took for me to pass out, no food or sleep for 8 days. Just staring at the ceiling seeing shit, I swear I felt better with every sip!

  • @youart9797

    Maybe you should have titled the video, "I explain what a hangover is for those who have never had a hangover, then I drone on and on by explaining what's going on in your body during a hangover" Every dumb "hangover cure" article with a headline about "curing" a hangover ends by saying "the best cure is not to drink at all". This video is a step below those that mainly because of the false advertising in the title. If the title would have been something along the lines of what I stated above then at least you'd have some truth in advertising and an "E" for effort.

      @@scottmcgrane4619 I guess I should clarify. For me, I have a sore neck from years of staring at screens. After a night of drinking, after sleep, my neck feels better. Like a got better sleep for that particular pain.
      I wonder when people look at the data, does it say "this is 100% true" or does it say "this is true in most people"? Know what I mean?

    A lot of this is talking in circles
    Having studied this subject as a
    Professional drinker lol
    If you want good advice.
    Time is more the key,
    Next day Pedialite and not eating until later evening helps. Usually a salty broth ie chicken noodle soup
    One good point is unrest. Having consumed a lot your brain will pass out but you don't rest.
    What happens when you stop drinking heavily you have crazy dreams, and sweat a lot.
    That phase moves into the next day your brain is able to rest
    Usually a lot of drool on pillow when you get a normal night of rest.
    I haven't found anything that can stop hang over or it's duration, is it harmfu?l, Yes. Honest part of life is there is no benefits from it. Trust me I know.

    I don't think Andrew drinks... doesn't know what the "hair of the dog" is? Doesn't know people aren't cold plunging while drunk for hangovers, but rather after? No discussion on the different effects of responsible drinking vs binge drinking? Andrew makes a lot of great content, but this is a subject he needs to study further.

    What I do is chug 1L of water in between my binging episode with a serving of electrolytes (which include salt, potassium, magnesium, and calcium). Then 1L of water before bedtime.
    I’ll usually wake up 2-3 times during the night, but hangover isn’t as bad. Quality of sleep is obviously shit, but you deal with that the next day and stick with fasting and eating only fruits.

    This is kind of all wrong and not helpful. The basic premise is alcohol breaks down into acetaldehyde which is toxic. If you're liver cant keep up with removing it in first pass metabolism, it can reach the brain and other body parts which causes histamine and bradykinin release leading to inflammation and vasodilation. Best way to remove this inflammatory toxin is to increase your urine out by drinking more water, and then to use NSAIDs like ibuprofen and antihistamines like Benadryl (if you're ok with being tired). Excedrin is also good as the caffeine can help with vasodilation in the brain but you don't want to overdue it since there's aspirin and it can cause bleeding

    Hair of the dog came from the idea that if you get bit by a dog, take a little bit of hair and mix it into some water or tea or whatever and that could prevent you from catching rabies if a dog has rabies that’s what I’ve heard. I don’t know how far back that goes but in a long time.
