Oooh I'm French 🇨🇵 and have been watching you for a long time ! I love your channel and what you've done with your homestead. I also have one with a 300-year-old farmhouse. So great to see you visiting our beautiful country !
Thank you for taking us along as you toured each this French gardens during your vacation. I am excited to hear and see all that you will incorporate into your own garden next year.
Thank you for taking us along your trip. One note: The walls in the gardens serve a purpose. Especially in winter or in places with harsher winters. For example stone wall inclosed gardens in Ireland. Due to the mass of the stone walls they retain the heat and provide a warmer microclimate. If you pear the stone wall with a atteched glass house on a south side (like in of the gardens you went to) then you could even achieve an environment for Mediterranean plants in climate where normally would not survive, e.g. northern Europe. This combination could maybe even provide you with a mircoclimate that would enable you to have a rosemary bush in your garden. 😉
I asked my dad once what was the moment he knew he fell in love with my mom. She had us 3 kids at 25 years old working on her masters after finishing her bachelor's in another study. He came to pick her up for a date and behind the fridge (because she is a very good artist) he found a huge wide and long paper drawing pad where she drew the outline of her future garden. My mom loves herbs, growing different tea's, vegetables, and they build a koy pond in every single home. It always smells like chocolate mint, and it's extremely peaceful.
I love this! I went to France last summer with my family and the difference in how good we felt eating in the food there, even on vacation, my mom and I didn't need a single acid reflux pill. We finished our summer in the Loire in these gardens and I was determined to come home and change the way we eat. So it's really cool to see one of my favorite garden TH-camrs doing a video here! So inspiring!
That was wonderful to watch. Thank you for sharing! I haven't had the chance to watch the previous video, yet. I believe you mentioned you are pregnant again? How lovely! Congratulations! I would love to see any new ideas you implement. Thanks again for sharing and blessings to you and your family 🙂.
That was incredible! I got a rush watching this. There is really nothing more beautiful than a garden. And I love them all. Thank you for showing us your trip. ❤
WOW!!! Those gardens were amazing!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your trip with us! I know I'll never get to go there in person, so this was such a treat! ❤
i am a regular follower of your channel. I am french and from. Quimper, not far from the abbaye de Daoulas. it is so nice that you came to France to ejoy those beautiful gardens. Since 25 years now gardens and potaagers are very popular and you can find a lot of them to visit througout France. Villandry is one of the most famous among the chateaux. . and at that time of the year it is certainly magical ! i am glad you enjoy your french tour ❤
Wow, what an intresting vlog!! I visited these castles more then 30 years ago (I am from Belgium, so not that far for us) But at that times, with kids, busy professional life, I was not yet into gardening, nor permaculture. Now I am retired and I have a small permaculture garden, a small herb garden and some raised beds and a tomato glasshouse. Your trip and your fotos and videos were very very nice to look at. Thank you 🙏
Wonderful that you visited the castle of Morimesnil. However, not so well known. Small beautiful vegetable garden, characterized by the combination of vegetables and flowers. Used to be the kitchen garden to feed the people who worked in the castle. I stayed there in 2021. Too bad they stopped in the farm of le bec hellouin with public visits, they used to be open to the public every Friday from 15h. Still visited in 2018. I wonder how you Americans experienced this trip in France? Don't you miss that culture and pitoresque of europe? When I was in the USA, I felt fairly depressed, everything felt so big and fake. No cozy villages, castles, historic city centers, narrow cozy roads. Greetings from Belgium.
It depends at where you went in America. Most tourists only go to the big cities and ignore the small towns and other regions of America which is different. Napa Valley is wine country, Pacific Northwest are woodsy places with salmon fishing, the South/Midwest has the cozy small towns. Those places are different than LA or New York.
@@trayvixk4642 Agree! I live in a rural part of northern Maryland, and 10 min away from us is a very historic town in PA- log cabin-homes built pre-1800!
Unfortunately most of the U.S. is much younger than 200 years old. The rate in which we have developed our country was hundreds of times faster and prioritized profit over aesthetics.. we don’t get to experience much of what you listed. But I assure you we have many cozy small towns in rural areas that are deeply connected to nature and agriculture. The village I live outside of has more 10-20 lakes within a 10 minute drive and many nature preserves.
Loved this video! The gardens are beautiful, and i love your takeaways. As i feel, i would be looking at the same thing and did notice that as you were showing them.
I had no idea that rosemary didn’t overwinter easily. We had a HUGE rosemary bush in our garden when we lived in New Mexico, where the winters were very cold.
WOW!!! So Amazing!!! Thank You for sharing🤗 Learned a lot but also realized you are already doing things the best ways. So what we learn from you is perfect 💚
🇲🇫 Can't believe you guys were visiting my hometown and our world famous abbey ! I've been watching your channel for a while. That is quite crazy I would say ! Thank you for sharing with us your inspiring homestead lifestyle and all the best for your beautiful familly ! 🌱
I am extremely happy for you. What a joy! And how blessed! I have been to France 3 times but never thru the eyes of a gardener. Now that I am one, I would love to go on the same journey you took. However, thank you for sharing this trip with us so that I can at least have a taste. 😊❤
Thank you for sharing! What a magical trip! I tried getting to Le Farm Du Bec Hellouin when I was in Normandy in 2016 and wasn’t able to. How lovely to enjoy it vicariously through you. Love his book! Will look for the new ones.
Thank you all you work in videotaping and sharing with us. I especially loved the herbs as I am an herbalist and used sell over 200+ types. Beautiful and interesting gardens. All with their own character.
Quel voyage incroyable! Thank you for taking the time to edit a video to share your experience. Vive les agriculteurs français! (And Arkansas farmers!!) 😃
The walled gardens create a protective microclimate for the plants which is why they are so popular for kitchen gardens particularly in stately homes (we have a lot in the UK too 😊) but you could achieve a similar environment with hedges like you said you just might need to have a greater space between where the hedges are and your beds rather than be able to go up to the walls as the roots would take water from the plants closest (in order for them to be tall enough to create the microclimate). Also a benefit of a wall is that you can train delicate fruit trees against them saving space and offering protection from frosts and strong winds. Thank you for sharing your beautiful trip with us ☺️
Great trip and certainly very tiring. I once went on a trip like this to England, there are such beautiful gardens. And then it's easier with the language.
The second garden was amazing and the man seemed so nice. I live in the Netherlands, im going to see if i can maybe visit that place when im on vacation in france 😊
Now I get how box woods can be beautiful or at least beautiful garden containers. WOW. Did you get names for the little round bundles of joy fences in that first garden? I hope you try some of these ideas even if it's just one or two tiny beds - just for the knowledge and sharing as they are absolutely gorgeous. Who can even image a step-over apple fence. WHAT? Just amazing and smart. But down here in Florida I wouldn"t get much produce as the deer and rabbits would eat it all gone.I need to check out some more of these gardens for ideas to try just for the beauty. If you know of any websites, please share.Thank you for this tour and thank your family for sharing you with us.
Honestly I think you could garden all year there. They rarely get frosts in winter. They get a lot less sun in winter though and cooler temps so have cool season crops planted during that time.
I was impressed by how healthy the vegetable plants looked. You did mention they use fish emulsion as fertilizer but what else do they use to have such healthy looking plants? What about pest control?
Cool, that you shared ur experience with us. I really like to look at gardens in other countries. Just an idea, but how about a stonebed near the house? That way you could utilise the heatstoring properties. We have a herb gardensnail(?) and most plants survive the winter (rosemary, thyme, estragon (50/50), mint).
They don't "sweep it up". They use what is known as a "Brush rake" that can rake up most of the clippings without raking the soil. Then they blow the remaining under the hedge.

Loved this video! The gardens are beautiful, and i love your takeaways. As i feel, i would be looking at the same thing and did notice that as you were showing them.
Here because of Julie Kreke’s mention. I was in France in 1966….seems like lifetimes away now.
La Ferme du bec Hellouin: liked their approach. I wonder if Charles incorporated Masanobu Fukuoka’s natural gardening methods in Japan?
I had no idea that rosemary didn’t overwinter easily. We had a HUGE rosemary bush in our garden when we lived in New Mexico, where the winters were very cold.

Two centuries of pulling weeds, and our gardens will look this good.

They don't "sweep it up". They use what is known as a "Brush rake" that can rake up most of the clippings without raking the soil. Then they blow the remaining under the hedge.
Good to know!!
The matts are probably wool felt. Last a long time, biodegradable
What was that manual tilling tool Charles was using?? That thing seemed awesome!
Good question- I didn’t have him spell it out so not sure! Maybe he mentions it in one of his books.
it is called "campagnole"
