    Day and night difference between the two. The original almost sounds like playing through a wah pedal that's rocked halfway forward, ie pronounced mids. Kind of nasal, not necessarily a bad thing if that's what you're going for. But the Waza sounds more natural and clear, I wonder if the original maybe has a problem, like a busted capacitor.
    The Waza's custom tone also sounds appreciably different from its default tone, and is the best of the 3 imho.

    • @springbloom5940
      @springbloom5940 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem is the W2 is different enough, to be a different pedal(and not a very unique one). If you want the unique HM2 tones, I expect you'll be very disappointed.

    I much prefer the tone of the original. This has made me happy that the second hand market will be rebalanced as the prices have gotten stupid. This was a great comparison, but has just convinced me to get an original MIJ again if I want this sound in the future.

    The (original) Boss HM-2 pedal was the first pedal I ever had. I picked it up second hand while I was early on in college so had to have been 1990. At the time I was playing it through a Fender Super 60 (nice little combo amp). I was never terribly impressed with the pedal, but it got the job done for cheap. The funny thing is, I don't know what happened to that pedal, I don't remember ever selling it or trading it.

    Glad to see you're back - I've missed you.
    Interesting to hear the differences with your pedal and setup compared to other videos I've seen; just shows how different gear changes the sound.
    The Waza is bound to be clearer, louder, etc. as there'd be no point creating something not as good, but also an original is over 30 years old and bound to have some components getting worn.
    I have 5 HM-2s and also many clones that are more defined and sound better, but I'll always keep the originals.

      @@CIRCLEOFTONE I’m glad you mentioned that. If you would consider doing that over again I and the 6 other Orgy fans out there would greatly appreciate it.
      I went down an Amir Derahk rabbit hole about a year and a half ago. If I can help steer you in the right direction he went into detail on The Dave Friedman Tone Talk episode he was on. That episode lead to several podcasts, interviews, and old magazines articles I pulled up on google. Off the top of my head he said that the ‘Orgy Sound’ was a series of vintage and modern gear from that time. Amir and Ryan both favor Marshall tones and still do today because they use Friedman amps. I’ve seen Amir use Orange too. Keep in mind - he played Synth Guitar and Ryan played Electric guitar. The Roland Hex pickup is crucial if you are chasing Amir’s guitar. Both Players pushed each of there individual rigs with the Hyper Fuzz that was the secret sauce. In those days Ryan was playing Ibanez 7 strings and Amir played Jackson’s, Parker’s, Ibanez and a few others. One thing I noticed about his sound which I know is prevalent in the ‘Julien-K’ camp is that he uses a P-90. I have a feeling P-90s made an appearance on Candyass and Vapor Transmission. His goal was to take the Judas Priest ‘Turbo’ tone and make it as gross and off putting as can be. Ryan also used a lot of Tremolo effect on that album.
      Hopefully that was helpful, it’s all I can remember off the top of my dome. I hope one day you revisit that tone because it’s so unique and greatly forgotten. I hope that album sees a resurgence again. Thanks dude.

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's the same value components I suspect the hm2w is just a cleaner signal path than the original. Less signal degradation. So you may lose some freqs with the original BUT the ratty mid high treble remains which makes that sound. But on the waza all freqs are hitting so you get that cleaner top end and more perceived volume. Better tolerance on dozens of components and less capacitance can really clean things up and stop choking freqs.

      @erikvincent5846 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CIRCLEOFTONE I'm curious to know what they did about the "cross-over" distortion portion that was traditionally Germanium Diodes. With those being slim-pickings and the preference to go SMD, I'm guessing (and only a guess), they either used Schottky diodes instead, or they removed the cross-over distortion all together. From what I hearing, I am guessing the former, instead of the latter. Yeah, I can nerd out of that circuit.

    Oh man, the Peavey MS412 with Sheffield 1290s is such a hefty cab and yes, the speakers are very dark with really spiky highs. I had one for a while but I ditched it for a 1960a loaded with T75s. I find the T75s with a Peavey VTM and a HM2 are the perfect recipe for a chainsaw.
    Concerning the sound difference, was the original HM2 fully powered? To me it sounded like it was slightly underpowered to my ears (dying battery?). They were from the era of 12v shunted to 9v craziness that Boss thought was cool and required a special power supply for it to function properly. Only other options were battery or the pedal had to be daisy chained to get the full power.
    Either way, I am stoked to get mine whenever it decides to show up.

      @riffsnoleads 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CIRCLEOFTONE I have no idea what type I have. The cab is definitely older though. I opened it up to fix the wiring and there was rust and cobwebs galore. My best guess is that it is from the late 90's or early 2000's. Pretty sure it was a JCM900 cab. Unfortunately 40% of the vinyl is gone, the grill cloth is torn all over and all the Marshall badges are missing. I had to replace the handles and jack plate just to get it working. Only cost me $100 and a fuzz pedal though, so I feel like I beat the system.

    Regarding the tones...I think I prefer the original here, but who's to say, through my cellphone. Still getting a Waza. I almost think what I hear as more highs in the original is simply a higher noise floor, which the new one has less. So that cleaner sound may be just that.

    But I apologize for being off subject and I'm sure you get asked this all the time, but are you a fan of Kings X, or at least familiar enough with their past albums, to maybe cover the subject of Ty Tabor's signature sound and the unique circuitry that is utilized in his Strats? It's not easy to find all the information from what I hear, but some of the details have been slowly leaked out over the years.

      @@CIRCLEOFTONE agreed, too many bands just rehashing the same stuff over and over, this is the problem as you get older, i am 44 (old school death metal fan, US and Sweden/Stockholm) and have heard alot of it before but for younger metal fans its great. i just love playing the HM2 for my own enjoyment. i have a Japan 1984 and a Taiwan (not sure of its year) and there is a slight difference in those two. that sound just hits the spot for me. Also i do like other styles and genres and am interested in all sounds and production styles. keep up the great work, i always enjoy your videos. Cheers

    China made a hm-2 heavy metal deluxe pedal....and guess what?
    It has a switch for high an low gain ..and a lower noise floor than the original boss...here's the kicker.
    I ordered and received mine 2 years ago.so essentially boss made all of us wait an extremely long time to get our favorite pedal re-released cuz they are greedy.they wanted to make sure they'll make millions first.and essentially and almost obviously...boss went and took china's ideas on theyr boss hm-2 clone.and stole their ideas to use them as a wazacraft version.that kinda makes me mad...and the price as well.$179 what?
    For a switch extra and a sticker that says wazacraft...damn man.ive had this pedal essentially for 2 years now and I love it but...now I don't need to buy a wazacraft because boss took the pedal I owns schematics and treated it like they are doing us a huge favor...and nobody even knows because of TRUMPS dumb ass making all kinds of people hate the Chinese...stupid people I say.i hate this world sometimes.
    I'm gonna save my money and get the real HM-2 HEAVY METAL pedals that actually matter... 1.FUZZLORD-HM-6.
    2.BEAR AMPS-HEAVIER METAL.
    3.LONE WOLF AUDIO- LEFT HAND WRATH.
    4.XINSOUND-HM-18M HEAVY METAL DELUXE.$47 from China...you havta ship around or you'll end up paying a stupid assed shipping and handling fee that's insane...don't buy that one.go to
    dh gate and buy it from XINSOUND on there because there's free shipping and it will only cost you $47.period. a damn fine price for a badass pedal.and this pedal fucking rules.its the exact same fucking thing as the wazacraft...I just realized it when I was watching your fine video.thank you for putting up kickass content...you seem like a really cool guy.wish I could kick it w you and jam.but before it's gone or something crazy.you NEED TO BUY A XINSOUND-HM-18M HEAVY METAL pedal from DHGATE.
    IM VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED IN BOSS and how much they apperantly care very little about theyr fans.im not even gonna sign a petition for the fz-2 cuz I'm not begging them for shit anymore.they made us wait and wait and wait for a regurgitated copy of theyr own pedal from China.
    Wtf is that? Sorry man,I'm just super let down and mad that they are charging so much for the damn thing too.now all the other hm-2 are gonna stay at $200 and $250 because of it..if they would've at least made it cheaper than $100 it would've FORCED all the old pedals and all the new super expensive clones to drop theyr prices (all of them) to something that I can way more easily afford.so I'm just feeling like I got super screwed real bad by this company all the sudden and it kinda hurts me.i LOVED boss.oh well .I'm gonna give too much money to the people who are actually designing shit and actually care about this pedal.boss only cares about money.LWA-at least made an HM-2 that kills all of boss pedals.and actually put new options on the pedal.and actually redesigned circuits.boss barely did anything at all.except make us all wait very long for this....essentially a=
    Chinese XINSOUND HM-18m heavy metal deluxe pedal stuffed into a boss HM-2 wazacraft pedal casing.
    this is greed and laziness at its finest because china made this pedal to the T it seems exactly.and I bet too....1 year an a half before boss ever even had the list of ALL of our signatures and any uprising of wanting a re-release of this pedal ever swimming in theyr tiny balls yet.
    They at least could of actually done some work and put EXTRA knobs and functions an shit on the pedal that they woulda had to design.and not just a tiny lil switch.for low and high gain....just like my Chinese clone that rules balls.i apologize still and yes I LOVE BOSS PEDALS.but I feel a bit bettayed by all the lack of everything involved on theyr part.
    So I'll give my money to th Chinese and the people who are making the BEST BE ALL END ALL HM-2 PEDALS.and not the wazacraft.
    I would however buy one used for $60 a long time from now when this shit is dying down and Left Hand wrath's are $150 brand new.this crazy pricing bullshit has got to come to an end .

      Hey. Send me all of those pedals. I'll send them back and demo them together. Just remember that they copied boss at the end of the day so don't get too outraged ;-)
      It's like complaining a song/cover version sounds as good as the original and was recorded cheaper without paying the original song writer. I own a hm2 clone btw. I'm not an angel.
