What does 3. 5 years of bass practice look like?

- In January 2021, I started my journey with Ariane Cap's cohort. Her amazing online videos which really explained how to practice, and what to practice each week made a huge difference to learning this instrument.
I did the cohort again in February 2024-- the first 10 units.
I took the opportunity of putting a compilation of the differences.
Nice to look back ... and it's great that I have the videos too!

I created Bass Rumblings website (www.bassrumblings.net) to keep all of my practice, songs, challenges, tips, resources. I hope to inspire people that you can start playing any instrument at any age - put the right practice in, and slowly develop your confidence.

I wish I could practice daily like in 2021, but I'm trying my best! Yup consistency is key.
I filmed myself playing for the first time today, after 4 months of practise (Bass Buzz and Songsterr). You have inspired me not to delete the footage!

But ya, I totally encourage everyone to video themselves. The things that I pick up by reviewing my video are insightful . Videoing is one thing, but I encourage people to look at it and learn from your practice. Easy to video, but it's the reviewing that's magic.
@@bassrumblings Not advertising anything other than the fact I am new to learning bass and found your early days and recent videos a useful comparison, and a good idea. The fact that I am not using the same course as you was not meant in any way derogatory to the course you used. Horses for courses. delete the post if it offends

Absolutely!! Videoing yourself is so so helpful. I learn a lot by watching myself, and I can say that I've progressed more because of this (not the only thing, of course). I caught my 'mistakes' early.

Thanks Ari. 6:30am is early but nice to have the day thinking about the lesson. I would say, though, that a 5:30am start would show a real commitment, ....but don't test me on it :)
Very inspiring, you’re so much more fluid now. I’ve been playing for 2 years now, was utter rubbish when I started and now I’m just rubbish. But I keep plugging away. Kudos to you for reaching your standard in 3 years.
Do you have a great bass teacher? They might help you improve your rubbishness :)
As long as you enjoy playing, it's all good!! Making music is what it's all about!
@@bassrumblings Yes, I have a mentor who supports and encourages me. The last advice he gave me was that my bass playing would improve substantially if I could master note length, timing and string muting. So just the basic tenets of playing the instrument! 😂

Awesome video. I salute you for your progress, your discipline, and this video record. May I suggest that you focus on your plucking hand for awhile? Consider your muting, maybe use the floating thumb technique. But you’ve made enormous strides in a short time !!!

A girl and a bass and dogs 😊 🐶🎸 I am getting back into it after a long while… I like your Jackson..I bought my Jackson second hand online too, but mine looks like an Ibanez… but I prefer the sound of my sire v7 jazz…I am doing the SBL slap bass accelerator. I also completed the first part of the Talking Bass slap course.
I liked my Jackson when I bought it, but I see now that it was the colour that I liked best :) I love the Ibanez. Fit me so well.
Slap bass-- I just don't feel that I'm advanced enough for that. It's like another dimension and I haven't travelled in the first one enough :))
I bought my jackson cus i liked the color too, lol (blue burst) ..yeah, slap is hard, but i like funk...the sbl slap course is still available to sign up...i signed up last year but hadnt had time till now to practice ...I'm hoping it will "click"eventually.

This is very inspiring, I started learning bass at 19, and then in 2021 I decided to get more serious about learning bass guitar at 28 well as taking lessons. I started with a Jackson bass and then the tuning keys went out on mine. Now I have a Fender jazz bass. What brand is brown bass you was playing with?
I liked the colour of my Jackson, and it played well. I didn't have any issues with it. It's in its case as my Ibanez is my main instrument. I'm glad you got back into playing bass. You must have a strong foundation if you started 10 years ago.
Fender jazz bass, from my understanding, is heavier than my Ibanez, and since I have a weak shoulder (fell off my bike then surgery), I really needed something that I can stand up and play for an hour or so.
@@bassrumblings I just been wondering should I go back to a Jackson Bass, if so maybe buy some turning keys or try Yamaha bass. I like my Fender Jazz bass. My goal is to get a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass 4 string natural or Squier Precision Bass. I want work on changing my bass strings when needed. Thanks for your advice.

I guess the question to ask yourself is: what are you looking for in a bass and what would another bass give you that your present bass doesn’t have?
For me, I would like a 5 string and I kick myself for not buying the bass that I saw. Why 5 string? Ohhh, that low B string feels good!
1. You've improved so much and you look comfy playing. 2. The Jackson looks painful to play compared to the Ibanez. 3. The jazz study learning curve is steep and a little cruel to confidence, but after the intake comes "Aha!" moments.
Personally, my studies felt like years of never having the time to understand anything well. Just barely hanging on, then on to another thing I didn't know...
I still have my Jackson, in the case. I need to get it out and try it on for size. It's heavier which is why I went for an Ibanez.
Learning intervals descending and ascending, [I never know which is which.... skinny strings to thick ones, I mean] is what is keeping me back... but I'm remedying that slowly. And few other things, but I know what I'm after now!
Hopefully those A ah! moments will come thick and thin (is that the expression?!) ya know what I mean :)
@@bassrumblings The Jackson looks like a 34" long scale bass with a wide, flat neck. My G&L was like that and I found (after 30yrs!) I prefer a 33" scale with a narrow jazz bass neck. I'm a Jazz Bass guy now.
@@rothloaf1980 I bought that bass online 2nd hand. It was going for a good price. I didn't know what to look for in a bass,... I do now !!
I didn't know that 'jazz bass neck' was a thing, if you know what I mean. I guess, my Ibanez could be referred to as that... I better start playing jazz now :)
@@bassrumblings Your Ibanez is like a jazz bass. The neck tapers to the nut and appears to have one less high fret than the Jackson.

HI Rick-- Call & Response in Am --I'm not quite sure what your question is, but basically, I'm playing one bar of groove then another bar of fill.. and anything on the pentatonic scale sounds good. And your question about " groove in Cm and Fm 1-5-8-10 " hum.. not sure how to answer that. I guess you would need to write it out on a rhythm pattern paper. You'd have to sound it out, then write the rhythm out. I wouldn't know how to do this on this forum without a pen and paper or Musescore..
Sorry if this wasn't helpful, but just use your ears! :)
I also think that the backing track helps sound out the rhythm that the bass plays in this instance.

Better play your favourite songs videos with tabs. You'll improve a lot. Trust me.

@@bassrumblings I'm not a spammer, but the one who's started to play bass by using music videos with bass tabs just this April. I can now play some of CCR, Lodi, dream lover, I fall to pieces, Jolene, rhythm of the rain, born to be wild, stumblin in, first cut is the deepest, diana, do it again, venus, yellow river, gren green grass, country road, neon light, tie a yellow ribbon, get together, you're only lonely and so on to a level. Have fun.

Your comment really goes to the core of why I learned to play the bass. I wanted to understand why and how music is created. Why are certain songs better than others? Therefore I started with understanding music theory, intervals, modes.
I want to improvise and not just play a bunch of songs. There's absolutely nothing wrong with playing a bunch of songs well, in time, and with the right feel for each note. My journey is a little different, I guess.
Tabs do help with knowing which fret to play, but I'm really trying to read music - if there is TAB and sheet music on the same page, I'm a little lazy and will go for Tabs. Maybe one day I'll just read music like I read English!
