Who Invented the Internet? And Why?

- Nuclear war, cat gifs and reddit? Wait, what?
Who was the genius who came up with all of that? The internet is such a crucial tool in our daily lives today that we hardly remember that it hasn't been here forever. But yeah, it is actually not that old. We still have fuzzy memories about the time before the first thing in the morning was to check email and browse our favorite blogs and youtube channels. Well, let's explore how the internet came into existence and why.
And another Kurzgesagt video that isn't depressing! Don't get used to it though.
We funny comments at the end of the video are real comments from real people, from old YGS Episodes from Jacksfilms: / jacksfilms
Thanks to Max from Moby Digg for the cat ;)
Next Video: May. Topic: Nuclear Energy
Videos, explaining things. Like evolution, time, space, global energy or our existence in this strange universe.

6:07 I think Kurzgesagt is disappointed with our comments....
GayyyyyyyyyyyyYyy
Not disappointed, just aware. They don't gloss over how comments generally appear in boards, regardless of subject matter. Thankfully, their inspiration and information for new material is not comment-based, aside from Kurzgesagt's realization that 6:07 is factual... at least at this point in time, when there are still a variety of users/minds available and the internet is relatively young. Given another 50 or 100 years, all comments could be uniform due to the mediocre drift of humanity.
マニさん Ive never seen the phrase, “mediocre drift of humanity”, what exactly do you mean by that?
@@jacookie9707 I was speaking to trends and to the general assumption that differences will appear less, and sameness will appear more, the more connected (and policed) the world becomes. Once the world becomes completely connected (99%, excepting aboriginal tribes that persist throughout the world) you can expect general thought patterns to be "guided" (read: controlled).
I don't know how old you are but if you haven't noticed that the current generation of young people are high maintenance (spoiled), then you haven't been paying attention or don't have children. And that high maintenance (spoiling) is going to continue, and it's going to get worse with each successive generation. Eventually governments will have to do the maintaining where parents, extended families, and communities, fail. Of course, innovators, geniuses, and billionaires can avoid the Drift by remaining Individual and out-standing, but the general population will eventually be corralled into a herd, if things continue to "go well" and we don't destroy ourselves as a species. Anyone alive now will certainly not be around to suffer from the effects of this "brave" new world, but let's say... your great-great-great-grandchildren will enjoy the benefits of this time because the world will have been designed with them in mind.
Once all the social mechanisms are in place and all the kinks have been worked out, and progress in general has plateaued, there will be one last generation born to call itself different from the previous generation. Afterwards, every succeeding generation will have the same upbringing, with very minor to no differences from preceding generations, because they will live in a society/world that is geared towards and fosters homogeneity -- mediocrity, if you will -- although not deliberately, mindyou. The mediocrity will be a natural repercussion of the society. All the differences and freedoms we enjoy now will matter little to this future society; they certainly won't miss these freedoms, as they've never experienced or known them firsthand. And there's the "mediocre drift of humanity" we're heading for -- not you and me, but our species in general (say by 2100, give or take 20 years).
Yeah, and I saw from this video, there was trying copy and paste to comment/ reply section 😂

Perhaps a better way to think of "the internet" is to think of it as the road system. In real life our road systems can be used for many different purposes such as people transport, recreation, logistics, food transport, livestock transport etc etc. At the same time, think of Facebook and TH-cam as "end user services" which can only fulfill their purpose AFTER they leave the road system and eventually find your personal screen.

What if I told you, you watched this video "Why the internet was invented", on the internet.
The internet maybe the last great invention.. its hard to imagine anything else being invented that will affect us as much as the internet has
Well said!
The rise of sentient machines might affect us quite a lot.
People probably said that after the steam engine was invented.
Jon and people will probably continue to say that after they discover unlimited universal energy or invent faster than light travel,
The Internet allows immediate communication, I think the next big breakthrough will be fast, practical travel. The ability to travel from the UK to Australia in maybe an hour instead of 24. You could visit a friend on the opposite side of the planet in the same time it takes us to drive to the nearest city today, that's why I have a lot of interest in things like the Sabre engine being developed that will allow aircraft to exit the atmosphere, speed to a destination by rocket and come back down to land.

Excellent video -- I haven't heard the term "packet-switching" used since I studied data communication (toward my Computer/Information Science degree some 27 years ago). The one thing the narrator missed, however, was that ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) was a US Dept. of Defense initiative. This agency researched and developed technologies (Hardware, software, network topologies, data encryption, data formats such as data framing, etc.) inevitably leading to what was then known as DARPAnet. Yes, one of it's main purposes was to allow any data communications to be preserved and received by to its intended receiver in case any part of the data communication networks were attacked (including nuclear) during transmission. This was performed by packet switching and multiple broadcasting of the data packets (frames). Basically, break up the message, send it out to multiple computers (aka "servers"), and then reassemble the messages at the receiving end (drop any duplicate packets if already received.) As a high end scenario; A message is sent via 5 separate network lines via multiple channels (or servers if referring to the computers) (ex. "A" "B" "C", "D", and "E").Message sent to those 5 locations, servers A and C and D are blown up. Since B and E survived the attack. The message can be then rebuilt at the intended receiver. Mission accomplished. ARPA and DARPA inevitably were split into 2 separate US Gov't agencies, but were merged back together (and several name changes of the agency between ARPA and DARPA beginning with Bill Clinton). So, in essence, although preservation of data networks under ?nuclear attack" was not a SOLE purpose of the then (D)ARPAnet, it was one of the MOTIVATIONS in which pushed DARPA's work in developing the network. The term "internet" was derived from (as mentioned in the video) Colleges and Universities to be able to share their info through the networks - but at that time it was a "private" network. It was not until the late 1980's when the network (internet) was opened up to public/commercial enterprises (hence the internet as we now know it today). Although the USA may not have been the sole "inventor" of the internet (and infrastructure), it certainly had very strong influence on how it developed.
Good high level video, though.

Well some people can be gay *and* hate kittens.
While this is a very well present video and I love all your videos. The story of TCP/IP deserved to be told. TCP/IP came from the US DOD model of network communication which was in direct contest with the ISO model. The DoD model won but every network engineer to date is taught both.
Fun fact the ISO model used 128bit network address but they were told we'd never need that many address... 20 or so years later ipv6 was born and it is uses 128bit address. 😊
Fuck you and your DOD
@@DJSAL415 Why? It did give us part of the backbone of the internet after all. Not to mention you’re using that protocol right now…
It doesn't matter who invented it...I'm just glad it exists.
it matters. same as knowing where you came from.
I like that idea at the end; That the internet might be a natural evolutionary step from our need to communicate. It vaguely reminds me of the paperclip machine. The simple rule of making as many paperclips as possible leads to interplanetary travel and destroying worlds down to the atom. We seem to be doing the same thing to achieve our simple goal of gathering and communicating as much knowledge as possible.
I am human and I think this is offensive
how?
@@whenthemewhen2755 if you pay attention to the end of the video, you'd get the joke
@@steverman2312 oooooooooooooooooooo now i get it
Give it time, you guys will be VERY BIG!

Am I a better human being now?
Sketch It D.I.Y hope so XD
Yes, you are so special .
Am I a better human being yet? Anyone? Hello?
Attention hunter
And it's reddiamondoffabulsous season, apparently.
Google "who invented the internet" and you'll get Robert Kahn and Vint Cerf who are an American engineer and an American computer scientist, respectively.
Not surprised that a Euro channel is a little biased toward itself.

He's saying a Brit invented the world wide web, not the internet. He did under-mention America's importance for the creation of the internet, though.
orangereplyer He was also very clear about the difference between the internet and the web, the internet came first and the Europeans invented the web.
This video was very nicely done.
Jeff DeWitt I understand, but the title of the video is "who invented the internet," not the www.
mimimarcus the www is a vital part of internet without it would not of got as big as it is, it made it more accessible to the public by making the system easier to use, check vsauce's video The Web Is Not The Net
Bearlyverygreat If it's on the web then it MUST be true... ;-)
Incredible work Kurzgezagt! Thank you 💕
I kind of like the idea that no "one" person created the internet and that the world together created it. ^_^

TCP/IP Protocol
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol Protocol.
Jeremy Patton dat recursion
TCP/IP Protocol sounds reasonable if you think that TCP is a protocol and IP is a protocol (it's in their names), and then TCP/IP [TCP over IP] is a (complex) protocol combining those two protocols.
Probably similar thing is to say: "CD and DVD disks". Both of these are borderline correct, I think.
Note that if your listener has no knowledge of the abbreviations they don't stand a chance understanding.
Another argument is saying "CD lemez" (lemez being disk in Hungarian), now, here it's the same duplication which is necessary because you can't just change CD to CL, no one would get it... and if other languages can clarify what is a CD/IP, why can't English? Incidentally "protocol" is probably "pro..." in most languages, hence borderline.
Would you have problem with having a company named "The Big Company" and saying "The Big Company company went bankrupt." Again translating the sentence would leave the name as is, but change company to the corresponding word that clarifies what that foreign phrase means.
Heh, never thought there are this many arguments on this side. Usually I'm on the other side, but there isn't much there other than DRY.
i noticed the extremely biased brit presenter was quick to credit europeans, but totally glossed over the fact that the theoretical idea was born and initiated in america, credited to JCR Licklider. the TCP/IP protocol created by americans Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf. operating system, american Bill Gates. first browser, mosaic, american Marc Andreessen.
+SVanTha Haha typical Americans trying to claim everything (your top scientists are all foreign anyway, without the H1B visa you would probably be miles behind many countries). Ok so the question is who invented the internet..... Not who inspired or created the basis for the internet to be created. It was who created the internet.... a British guy in CERN simple as.... The Internet as it functions today was created by him. If so it would be who created the concept of HTTP, URL and HTML anyhow. As that is the basis. Also Kahn and Cerf's work was largely based on the french computer scientis Louis Pouzin when developing TCP/IP so with your logic the theoretical idea was born France and the basis of their work was laid out for them by a French man... not an American ;) ..... Blahhh why am i even bothering.
+KBR ACKEN HTTP/URL/HTML are not "the internet". You do not communicate in any of those protocols/languages when playing games, chatting, making a phone call, transferring files, etc. The internet is a vast network of routers with an infrastructure that allows information to be sent to anyone on this network with no more than an IP address. I would say TCP/IP/UDP are the most fundamental levels of the internet. Saying HTTP/URL/HTML are the internet is like saying C++ is all of programming.
I'm a better human being! Yay!
Very interesting, thank you
