Love what Hagerty has been doing for the automotive community. Reviews by Henry and Jason are hands down my favorites and can’t forget about Hyphen and the Carmudgeon. This is all so good, please don’t stop tingling our petrol nerve for ultimate enjoyment! 🙌🏼
I've had three FDs, still have two (a track car and an OEM+ build) and it's the car I just keep coming back to. They look and feel exotic and exciting in ways few other cars that are still middle class-attainable do.
That may well be true. But a lot of those "ugly" bmws will age better then most of their modern rivals . I remember criticism for the e60 5 series and e62 6er, the e9x wasn't well received and the a series was ridiculed. But they all look better than their rivals today. It's just what BMW do. And, as an owner of an F83 and previously 2 e46s, the F8x is a better looking car to me.
RX-7s occupy a place very close to heart for me. I've owned a first gen for several years now and even though it put me through all the old car heartaches, I never managed to let it go. It's such an unique experience to drive this old, carburetted low-torque and high reving machine.
Seeing my fave journalist in my fave car really puts a smile on my face, thank you Henry. Not only have you put into words how beautifully the FD rotates, you captured it in video at 4:35 - the way that, when pushed, it just brings all four tyres equally to the optimum slip angle is delicious. Trail-braking is also highly effective, and generally the closer you get to the limit the more reactive the car becomes to your inputs. I loved the decade I had in mine (Factory 17"s, stock suspension, stock body, stock sequential turbos but wound up a bit), they really are quite special things, with a focus and purity that's almost exotic.
Have owned my stock UK FD for over 20 years. Henry's review is spot on. Also had a stock FC for 10 years and both have been extremely reliable. Look after them and they will look after you.
@@NovaResource The same letter can mean different things in different initialisms lol what a low-IQ reply. Also the X in MX5 and MX6 both stand for "Experimental"
The FD continues to get better with age. A sublime design, visually and mechanically. I was autocrossing my Neon ACR in the late 90s and I'll never forget watching FD RX-7s lapping the course with such controlled fury...
I have yet to see a LW kit make a car look better than the original let alone PERFORM better. I'm firmly in the sacrilege camp. Can't see how the stock FD can be improved with bolt-on fiberglass. Thanks for bringing this to us Henry, pleasure as always.
I had a 1993 RX7 R1. I was way too poor and naïve to own this car when I did, but what a fun car. It was at the height of the Fast and Furious craze, and EVERYONE wanted to talk about my car everywhere I went. I miss the car culture that cars like this had.
I had a '94 FD for a couple years in the 2000's and it was a fantastic car. Completely impractical as a daily driver in the Midwest, though, and the fragile apex seals make it a ticking time bomb of costly engine repair after 60k miles. But, I wish I could have afforded to stick it in storage at least. I've owned several other high performance cars and it is still my favorite.
I'm on my sixth RX-7-five FCs and one FD. I currently still own an '88 Turbo FC and a '93 FD. There aren't many cars out there that tickle my pickle like these do!
Now you're speaking my language Mr C! I like the Astons etc but this is where its at. Like some one else has said, more 90's legends please. Awesome presentation as always, thank you 👍
My dream car in the 90s. Came close to upgrading my Eclipse GS-T, test drove a few, but, alas, never pulled the trigger! I test drove one that a middle aged pilot owned and was selling. I opened the glove box and his teenage daughter had left a bottle of Cisco in there.🤣
Late 90s. Me and 4 of my buddies had these in college. They were nearly new then, and barely ran. Mine was at Mazda getting fixed 14 months of the 24 total I owned it. In the end, my ownership cost of maintenance was just a bit over $10 per mile. My friends didn’t do much better. That these can even be operating now is an absolute marvel to me.
@@JasonYoung-o6i I bought my 1993 CYM FD new in late 1992, slowly made very small and mild changes to intake, exhaust, ECU, short shifter, light flywheel, suspension, and front brakes (all Pettit) as I used it for HPDE as well as my daily driver. Not only did I put all BMWs, Corvettes, 911s, and Vipers to shame at Sebring, my home track, but I also never ran into an ounce of trouble once I replaced all rubber vacuum lines with silicone. Had it until 2001, put 149,000 miles on it, still looked and (for the most part) sounded stock. NEVER should have sold it. The 2004 GT NAV RX-8 I bought new years later just wasn’t the same. Yes, it kept up with C7 Z-06s on twisty mountain roads and gave me 150,000+ miles of great fun, but it wasn’t the same.
if you are a person who owns one and you swapped a piston engine into it you've ruined it. yes you've made it more reliable and it's probably more powerful but that's not the point. rx7 is THE rotary car, why would you take something unique and turn it into a boring regular car?
This comment usually comes from people who have never owned an FD. I'm a big rotary guy and I've had a 13B FD and currently own an LS1 FD and they are both fantastic. The LS FD is amazing. A real car person would drive both and love both for different reasons. I love my swapped FD.
that FD was a clapped out drift car before it was resurrected into the LBWK showcar. They kept the SR20 that was found and ran with the theme. I have a mate who knows the car's story better, perhaps he could tell how it ended up with an SR20, but one would assume that drift cars have a really hard life and at some point they just needed a reliable powertrain that does the job.
The FD should have been fitted with 245 tires because even in stock form, it was hard to keep the power down on the road. It's one of the best driver's car ever made and also one of the best looking car ever made. Even today it does not took dated. A very timeless design. Very exciting to drive because of it's light weight which makes it seem more powerful than it is. More fun and capable than my 993, e30 m3, s2000 and boxster.
