- The Final Shape. What actually is it? Do you know? Do the Witness’ Disciples? This phrase can be found all the way back in Destiny 1’s Hive Book Of Sorrow and over the years has become more prevalent, even receiving a final saga expansion of the same name. Today we are going to talk about what the Final Shape actually is according to the Witness.

while probably not the witnesses intended goal it may be what happens if we fail
That was the result of the Vex accomplishing their goal. Not the Witness. Though both factions kinda want the same thing & since the Vex cannot stop the Witness, they could possibly have joined in on it's cause

and the vexes goal was the result of the dark future seen in curse of osiris when the Infinite mind was still running the forest, after its destruction the dark future was unraveled into a different one, one of absolute nothingness

Or plot twist the traveller is the winower.
It makes consciousness capable of death. As the traveller said its brings forces to play that can snuff out life in an instant. Not to mention every single species it visits is nearly innihilated.
I cant help but feel like our guardian has a bigger role to play.
The Traveller keeps creating, but everything it creates leads to more destruction. We're probably one of its most successful endeavors, but with our Light we destroy and kill. Maybe the Winnower isn't a single entity, but whomever the Traveller has Chosen
This idea reminds me heavily from the plot of a anime called gurren Lagan where the being known as the anti-spiral sees that growth/change leads to chaos or violence particularly in living things. Secondly if you look into something call Sacred Geometry it seems like destiny pulls very heavily from that from what I can tell

Thanks for the great explanations as always. However, regarding The Gardener and The Winnower, most of the community always thought of two supreme beings wielding dark and light, and the Traveler with the Veil being only two of more agents of both forces on either side. However this entire concept (or supposed concept) has been ruined because the Veil plays no active role in the lore and it seems like the Witness' race was one if not the first to be blessed by the Traveler. So the Traveler is essentially the Gardener. But who is supposed to be the Winnower, the Veil or the Witness?
I think the idea is that the witness is taking up the mantle of the winnower as it thinks that a winnower is needed, and no one is doing it.
There's plenty of interpretations about the Gardener and Winnower out there, not least of which being that they are in a very literal sense the Light and Darkness themselves. It's also directly stated from the book itself, that they became the new rules.
Granted, it gets complicated with the Traveler and especially with the Veil, but if I can throw my hat in the ring, I have a concept that works for me at least.
The Light and Darkness existed in a symmetric state before the universe, and there's hints that they were once the same force at the beginning. But when they broke apart at T=0, what if it wasn't a perfectly equal split? The Traveler got dominion over the physical universe, can actively move around and influence objects, directly create and destroy, and create intricate and varied plans.
But the Veil got dominion of the conscious, of communication and whispers. Nudging and tempting, and instead of countless plans and goals, just the single overriding desire to dominate existence completely?
The Traveler has control over universe but doesn't demand or force anything on any one, and the Veil has influence over the mind but desperately wants the control over all of reality that the two used to have when they were unified.
The Winnower might be the Witness’ interpretation of the process in which things die or at least giving a form to Death to explain it.
@kyleespinoza7201 What if the 9 are part of the Veil but don't remember since the split, the 9 wants to interact with the world in a more meaningful way. I find it odd that the 9 didn't reach out to the darkness or vise versa since it Desires paracausal power.
I think the Veil is the Winnower. Since the Witness's species and Maya Sundaresh were changed after finding and studying the Veil, and Ahsa says that this species was the first victim of the Witness, perhaps the Witness is this persona that emerges after interacting with the Veil, in some kind of connection like the Traveler and its speakers, but different. The Witness would be some kind of herald, serving the Veil's purpose, to win the game described in the Unveiling lore book.
The Traveler moves around and creates things, it actively changes reality, intervening in the universe, as the Gardener. "The domain of the Light is the domain of the physical"
The Veil stays still, being moved by others, avoiding material intervention, and influencing the minds of those who come near it, as the Winnower. The domain of the Darkness is the domain of the mind.
I see the final shape as engineered heat death or forced entropy with only on being left alive.
Something that really stood out to me here is the line "In absence of a hand, either the flowers themselves must rise up to wield the knife, or the garden will resolve to meaningless wilderness". It seems The Witness discovered the original garden and true intentions of the Gardener and Winnower and realized the Winnower is no longer here and so The Witness took up it's mantle. As a side note, I wonder if The Witness was able to view what was before the universe by using the Veil.
The Final Shape is the expansion I won’t give Bungie a dime for.
I wish they had put more effort into Destiny to finish the saga instead of pulling resources for Marathon.

The traveler is a sphere, when circles are placed next to each other, all of them the same size, what happenes is gaps are left, even if they were filled with smaller circles, there would still be gaps, any other polygon, ones without curves that is, would fit together perfectly, like honeycombs, or the witness's idea, triangles. The gaps left by the circles cannot be filled completely by circles, there will always be gaps, the shapes of the representatives of the two sides shows that the witness thinks that the gaps, the "imperfections" must be removed

The final shape will define us as the most powerful Guardian to have ever lived Remember after we took out the heart of the black garden the witness confronted Us. In my opinion, The Gardener creates, expands, is life, and growth.
The Witness is the opposite, or acts as The Winnower. The Witness seeks stillness and nothingness.
You can see this in the way it tries to control things. You can't have suffering, if there is nothing that can suffer.
The Witness doesnt seek stillness. The Witness seeks endless Meaning. Perfection. A World how it should be. A World where the Witness desires are the only truths. Its not a final reconnection of Light and dark what it should be. The Witness kicks God of his thrown and say " Im gonna do it now" The Witness simply wants the control over everything. Over Reality. Over God
if the gardener and the winower became law in the game to change the game. then the laws that were created were the traveler and the veil. so by combining both laws you will probably be able to undo those special laws created to change the original game. back to before the special laws were injected into the game that the original gardener and winower play.
I dunno, so far the Final Shape looks like the Witness got a little too excited when it got a hold of the level editor.

this is all just starting to sound like how Blizzard introduced Zovaal, the Jailer in WoW. they put a face behind a very mysterious force thats always been in the background and the focal point of so much lore, but are delivering it the wrong way.

I think it's not so much freezing or erasing, I Believe the final shape is a fusing - Just like the witness is an amalgamation of its entire species, The Final Shape is an Amalgamation of all life in the universe into a Paracausual Singularity.

I miss the time in my life where I'd be disturbed by what the Witness wants to do. As it is id give up every good experience i ever had to not have had the bad experiences, more importantly to have not born witness to the absolute ocean of suffering this planet is drowning in.
Soooo... I'm gonna throw this theory out there... how can we completely eradicate the Darkness of we're only taking out the Witness?? He's not at the top of the food chain.. so when we take down the Witness, will we then need to defeat the Winnower?? Just seems a lil odd to end the Saga and we haven't even laid eyes on the Darkness itself.
It sounds to me like a opportunity to transform and surpass our form our final shape,maybe the whole reason isnt to cull but to push us to assend to godhood.
In my perspective the final shape is just a “final” reality. A reality of no meaning and no end or beginning. No suffering. No nothing.
But that’s just my understanding.

Also the ghost said he felt sick like he shouldn't be here, are they his feeling or the witness. What is witness feeling or how it feels. The first collapse was a faliure and after it the ghosts were created by traveler. Do you think the ghosts and the witness are related somethow?

Something the Witness and the Final shape lead to the end of time, where nothing else remains and everything has died, and then, at the very moment when nothing seems to be left, the big bang happens.
What if the final shape inevitably leads to the big bang everyone knows, and that is the reason the witness and the traveler seem to play this eternal game of cat and mouse. Where the traveler attempts to keep life going, and the witness destroys it... or urges others to do it instead. And when the Witness finally surrounds and captures the Traveler, it begins the process of destroying the universe to recreate it once more.
In fact, what if every black hole is like a Traveler who had been lost in the attempt to beat the witness's game? A nothing that remains like how the Hive see it. And how Savathun believes they are gateways to other universes. What if that is true and the reason these gates to other universes is because of this game they play.
Something also tells me that when the guardians reach the pillar and either stop the witness or convince him to do something else instead, that the Traveler will likely reattach the part it had cast aside onto earth after it had been corrupted by darkness. Seeing that light and dark can in fact work together in a harmony of sorts. Possibly giving the traveler an edge maybe on helping us defeat the witness.
The whole story was good up until the whole Gardner and Winnower I immediately thought “oh someone ready It and no one else this generation has they only know the movie. Almost dualism in a way more Yin and Yang rather than good and bad
This remind of bleach thousand year blood war main villain purpose is to rebuild the world.
What if the the traveler, or the light, also created the darkness? You can’t have one without the other, but you also can’t have a shadow(darkness) without first having light. Just a thought.

The problem with this is that the concept of the final shape seems to have been retconned. When the Hive were the main enemy of the Light, the Final Shape was what remained when everything else was removed. When they introduced the Witness, it seems like the Final Shape was retconned to mean a universe in stasis (the lack of entropy, not the darkness element).
this is true, i believe the Hive really introduced the Darkness very well, and thats what made it so interesting and mysterious. as soon as they put a face to it, everything seemed to just seem way too dramaticized. its kinda like how Blizzard introduced the Jailer in WoW lol.

After all the build up and suspense the witness is a villain who wants to bend and shape reality to its will........ I've never heard of that before, very original Bungie.
I mean, like it or not, it fits in perfectly with all the build up and the established powers of the Light. Predictable, sure, but anything less would be way more disappointing.

@@kyleespinoza7201 I mean there's any number of options to use other than a generic evil bad guy that wants to control everything. Perhaps the final shape is to close off every dimensional reality except for one bringing every being into existence on the same playing field. the witness and the traveler merging to become one entity. Perhaps it's all one big simulation The witness is trying to get out of. Anything is better than a one-dimensional bad guy trying to take over everything.

The Final Shape will be the final removal of all the old content, leaving only the EDZ, the Cosmodrome, and the seasonal activity which you will do two hundred times because that's all Destiny is: doing the exact same event over and over.
Oh, but you'll get 4 minutes of exposition delivered by clunky, one-sided hologram projections and audio speeches through your ghost, all of which will sound cryptic and leave you with an incomplete understanding. So there's that.

Yeah this is actually why I gave up on Destiny recently. All of these plot threads (the veil, the black heart, Sudadesh, cloudstriders/the vex) were just dropped in Destiny 1 to milk the franchise through Destiny 2. The grimoire cards were hella interesting back then and they just disappeared until 5 years later? It’s becoming more and more painstakingly obvious as we get closer to the end of this “saga”. And I get it, games as a service and all, that’s the way it’s designed but it just kind of frustrates me that they’ve been sitting on this story for 10 years probably and milked it into nothing for 5 of those years.
