I wouldn't refer to an upgraded Brembo caliper and an Ohlins rear shock as "Fancy looking bits". They are both major upgrades IMO.

They're still built to a price and will not be the same as their aftermarket counterparts. He is correct by saying it adds more adjustability. For an extra 1k do you really think you're going to get major upgrades ?

Most people focus on performance. But the SP suspension is significantly better at soaking up bumps too! And I have different settings for track and street and yes, they make a big difference at least for feedback and comfort, if maybe (don't know, did not test softer setting on track) not so much on lap times.
The review is pretty light on info to be honest. I have the previous gen SP and was curious about the feel and performance of the new calipers. I found out they are shiny by watching this video.

If the keyless ignition on the MT09 is anything like on Yamaha's XMax range - it's gonna be shite. I lived with the ball-ache of a keyless XMAX300 and after selling it to go back to a "normal" key ignition, I'm never going keyless again. Finnicky, battery runs out, fiddly little turn dial that gets corrosion and doesn't respond eventually, another thing to go wrong, (which Yamaha's XMAX ones did, a lot - they had to do a number of re-designs, they were so regularly failing, Yamaha should have recalled them). In my limited experience, I'd say beware keyless ignition. It's trying to solve a problem no one but delivery riders have.

I was looking at buying a new Triumph Street Triple 765 RS next year, which is obviously a fantastic bike, but when comparing it to the new Yamaha MT-09 SP, I think overall the SP comes out on top. The Street Triple might handle slightly better, but when you consider what you get for your hard-earned cash, such as Yamaha's full electronics suite of goodies, you can't ignore the MT-09. Considering the prices of bikes these days, it's an excellent bike for the price. You also get peace of mind from having Japanese build quality and reliability, and it has more than enough power for the road. Plus, I haven't seen a bad review yet for the MT-09, everyone is saying at the moment and for the money, it's probably the best street naked out there!

    • @DucatiDale

It’s a better engine for the road than the triumph as well

    • @soulrebelno1
      @soulrebelno1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@DucatiDale Yep, the CP3 is an excellent engine. I did manage to get a demo on a 2021 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, but didn't really get on with the bike, and also I didn't really like the sound of the bike when riding around town. I had a Yamaha Ténéré 700 at the time, and that sounded much better. That CP2 engine was also a cracker. Saying that, the Tracer sounded really nice when I opened it up down a slip road onto the motorway.
As far as I can tell, this version of MT-09 sounds much better in all situations, especially with the addition of the "grin-inducing" acoustic grilles. I've got a Suzuki SV650 at the moment with a slip-on fitted, and it sounds epic. I'm not in a hurry, so I'll wait until the deals start on the 2024 models. It looks like an excellent bike, and it's got every thing going for it, except for that exhaust!

If you’re only or mainly doing street riding the MT09 is probably more rewarding and exciting than the STRS. If you’re doing a lot of trackdays, the Triumph is probably the better choice. Personally I would choose the KTM890R over both of them, not for the looks but for the sheer performance and thrill. Saying that after owning three different generations of Street Triples. Not taking reliability into the equation, that KTM is a marvel to ride. If you like the engine configuration that is. For me it takes the best of both the MT and the STRS and fits it into a not so good looking, but very enjoyable package.

Great video as always. I'd love to see a comparison between the MT-09 SP and Street Triple 765 RS. I'm looking at both bikes and in my market the MT-09 SP is $3000 more than the MT-09 and $1950 more than a ST 765 RS with desired options (heated grips, cruise control, TPMS, protection accessories, etc). An educated, considered comparison would help put the value proposition of each bike into perspective since despite being somewhat different takes on the naked bike formula the MT-09 and ST 765 RS, in my opinion, are direct competitors. Plus, it would be a hoot to see Chris thrash both bikes in his wonderfully exuberant way.

I think Yamaha is about to give us the clutchless system in 2025 gor to MT 09 . Similar to mountain bicycle shifters . No clutch in the left handle which is much better and the shifters are in the left handle instead of the left leg which is a preferance and yamaha has prefered the left handle position but I have somerging to say regarding the location of the shifters.
All riders would prefer the clutchless platform, no doubt about it , yet many tradtional riders would prefer the shifter staying in the bleft leg insted of moving ti the left handle.
I think Yamaha can give in the same bike the option shift gears with a left bar shifter or eith the left leg in an interchangeable manner ; Lets the rider wishes to shift gear so he can choose to do it either way on the gly without the need to turn of any of them to ingage the other... It is a more variable approach which will make the new system more pleasing for a wider croud- both traditional riders and non trafitional rider , may be new riders. By the way itvis not a smsll detail it is achuge detail .

I'm aiming to get an SD1290GT later this year and if the finance for that doesn't materialise, my backup plan is to get an MT09SP. I don't see the backup as being that much less valid. It'd be nice to have the power, but the hooliganity (just invented that word, see? Anybody can be like Shakespeare) of both makes them, for me, two of the most alike bikes on the market. Maybe not in any single respect, but just in their basic outlook.

Would not touch a KTM. Far too many issues.

I don't like the dashboard, it has such thick black borders and such a small display. looks like the iPad 1.

When you call £1700 a thousandish... We don't round numbers the same way, on the continent.

New Mt09sp is really good bike… BUT… it loses more of its original charm… Previous mt-09sp is the Goldilock of “a bit of supermoto + a bit of road bike with proper front”.
Chris compared last gen Mt-09sp to hypermotard. Another odd duck - unique yet undoubtly playful machine. Now the new gen of MT09sp becomes too much of road biased naked. It’s like now we need to compare to MonsterSP instead of hypermotard.
It’s not a bad thing. More practical and maybe faster. But again, more fun? Not necessarily. Less unique? Sadly for sure.

On all cars the keyless ignition systems are the reason so many cars are stolen. I just cannot see any benefit to them.

Great stuff as always Chris, you never disappoint. One question bothers me. When will Yamaha give us the R9? Because when it appears, I will visit the Yamaha dealer on the same day.

I don't know man, this engine is great fun on a naked short bike. Might be a bit not enough for a supersport with a longer swingarm, like they did in the XSR900GP.

Chris, you keep saying "a thousand pound ish". I'm sorry, but £1,800 is definitely "two thousand pound ish"!
    Come on bro!
