- Mark Rylance wins the 2011 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for Jerusalem.
In his acceptance speech, he recites "Walking Through a Wall" by poet Louis Jenkins. He had also quoted a Jenkins poem for his previous Tony speech in 2008 when he won for Boeing-Boeing.
From 2011 AP news reports:
"I bet most people understood it in many different ways, which was kind of the point of it anyway," he said. "It was the contrast of the poetry of Louis Jenkins and that system of awards _ of winners and losers _ that intrigued me as a piece of theater, really."
He said he had been preparing three or four things to say if he won. He had been told he had only about 90 seconds to speak, including the walk up the stage. He had definitely ruled out the traditional listing of peoples' names, finding it unengaging.
"No one else will ever do the poems that I do because they're my thing. So it's tempting to give them another wonderful poem," he said. "It won't be a surprise but I don't think that matters."
Greatest stage actor alive today. Love the fact he's doing a poem on his acceptance speech. Irreverent. Just going up there and doing it with an american accent. From a good old kent boy
omearadaniel he actually was raised in the states from ages 2 to 18 in Connecticut and in Wisconsin, then returned to England to go to drama school, so the American accent is pretty genuine.
He should just be given awards constantly, so that we can hear more speeches.
He gave a normal speech when he won the oscar, I was disappointed.
An American accent is easy for Mark Rylance as he lived in the States from aged 2 years until his teens (I think).
Ann TwoShoes yes he was there from when he was 2 to when he was 18, so he’s lived there for nearly half of his life.
Wisconsin.
Yay its the BFG!! 1:40 I spy... Lily Rabe o_O
My favorite actor of all time. Got to meet him after a "La Bete" performance, swell fellow. He even played Olivia in TWELFTH NIGHT at The Globe back in 2002...he was the most convincing woman on stage I'd ever seen, so I guess he's also the best actress too!
This is what awesome looks like
I'm actually using this poem in a sermon tomorrow, (I've loved it since I first heard Robert Bly recite it in a Men's workshop in the 90's) and was looking for some bio info on Louise Jenkins, and this popped up. Awesome.... I'm going to borrow his cadence tomorrow when I recite it.
It's a poem by Louis Jenkins
Mark Rylance grew up in the United States, mostly in Milwaukee to an English family (I think from the age of 2-17). He only went back to the UK for college.
gina morvay he actually lived in Connecticut for a long time and moved to Wisconsin when I believe he was 10 or 11, he left aged 18 to go to the UK.
hey jess!!! good to see you and laura and the lovely ivy the other day, thanks for havin us and cookin us food, much appreciated. P.E.A.C.E.
Walking through walls is a lot more interesting than pot making or driftwood lamps.
deffo one of the best stage actors of all time
I so love this guy
i've never heard of him before the tonys but he's a genius :)
and it actually ran for more than 7 months, it ran for 7 and then was brought back a year later ..BY POPULAR DEMAND
This sounds like Mark Twain. He looks like Mark Twain. HE SHOULD PLAY MARK TWAIN.
Yes but if no one liked it how did it run for 7 months ? macdonalds sells billions of meal because people like it .
The play didnt start of £150 pounds a seat it started off in a cheap theatre in london and worked its way up and was the invited to go to the states. yes the rest of the cast might not of been as good but that is simply because the character rylance is playing is so strong and dominant (based on a real person )
Saw Jerusalem last night here in New York. Today is the last performance. I'm tempted to run down there again today and see the last performance. Failing that I am already thinking of taking a trip to London for the next and likely last run at The Apollo. I am still in a spell from the play last night and beginning to feel a bit obsessed, hence my visit here. Love the acceptance speech & now want to read more of Lewis Jenkins' poetry.
👌🏼
how can you say that ? have you even been to the theatre before ? i have met mark rylance and the cast they are not a teen cast they are all very skilled and highly trained they did 8 shows for nearly 7 months and he never complained once and everyone who went to see it was amazed even the best were shocked one man doesnt make a play he can start it but in the end everyone has to finish
:) Amazing speaking ability.
Brilliant, as usual.
Came here after Conan interview with Alec Baldwin, where he tells story about this speech & make impression of Al Pacino 😀
I feel as if the Tony voters voted for Mark because they wanted to see if he'd accept his award like he did in 2008.
jk, he really did do an amazing performance and totally deserved the Tony. :-)
Why is he awesome?
He's doing an american accent too haha classic
It's easy for him to do so since he himself grew up in the states in Connecticut and Wisconsin from age 2 to 18, when he headed back to the UK. So, yes, the American accent is genuine.
a moment of total darkness before you step out onto the other side. Beautiful and genuine :)
I keep trying but so far it's hurting my nose
3rd
what a wonderful, and great, fucking psycho, love it !!
what was he talking about
Huh, what? And.....I thought he was British?
KingKristoffer he actually grew up in the states from age 2 to 18...so yes, the accent is genuine. He specifically grew up in Connecticut and Wisconsin, and he’s good friends with Louis Jenkins, the guy who wrote this poem.
his american accent here is genuine insofar as it is well-practised, but his natural speaking voice is a british accent, as can be seen from other interviews and speeches he has given.
I don't get the speech. Someone please explain it to me?
Taaahahhahhahahahaah!!
He is funny!
He’s.…unique! 🙏🏼
