    Everything old is new again. Body on frame is now body on skateboard.

      @Coraga 1
      Wrong.
      If you can bolt a steering column and seat to the "skateboard" and drive it without the body, it's not unibody.
      If you have to fix suspension top mounts to the body, it's not "body on frame.
      DCP DCP is correct. , (The skateboard is still a "frame" though)

      The Rivian truck and SUV have a traditional body on frame design, this time with a battery pack and a motor moving the wheels, same with the BMW i3.

      @Coraga 1
      Motor trend article
      "......While Tesla *integrates* its skateboard into a more common *unibody* design, Rivian has skewed closer to GM's idea and bolted the R1S's body *onto* the skateboard."
      (Chassis)
      A unibody is a single box of welded panels incorporating the floor pan as the chassis onto which either subframes or suspension components are bolted directly, rather than having a separate chassis below.
      In a unibody ("one piece") design you can't have a separate rolling chassis such as is apparent with the Rivian.
      You would have a body shell sitting on the floor and suspension components in a pile at each corner.
      Done,
      Goodbye.

      It looks like it COULD be body on frame, but it sounds like most or all are using this architecture in a quasi-unibody mode, if the body is bolted on and contributing structurally. I'm not a fan of NVH, so I like the possibility of adding some isolation between the skateboard and the body. I don't know of anyone doing this, though.

    The lack of an engine is good for another reason, no block to get shoved into your lap when an accident occurs. You finally get a legitimate crumple zone up front.

    It seems like GM pioneered a lot of things. If the bean counters had just gotten out of the way, they'd be ahead of Tesla right now.

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really GM has done a note-worthy job with the Bolt especially but they don't have any platforms readily available to build off it
      and their brand is typically large v8 engines not Hybrids or electrics.
      Also Tesla invests far more heavily into the R&D of it's technology and closely works with Partners like Panasonic to produce new battery's,
      GM wouldn't be ahead of Tesla unless they committed to electric cars 3-4 years earlier.

    • @lukerinderknecht2982
      @lukerinderknecht2982 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@BigHeadClan that's exactly the OP's point. They've come up with innovative concepts like the skateboard design in the early 2000's or even the EV1 in the late nineties but ultimately never followed through due to costs.

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lukerinderknecht2982 If the Engineers had more fore-sight they would have ensured their platforms were more readily designed for
      48-Volt systems, and heavy hybrid designs. I'm sure the bean-counters and shareholders had a lot to do with those products not making it to market
      but other companies have went through similar hardships same and are better positioned.
      Nissan nearly went bankrupt in the late 90's, but they pulled themselves up by the boot-straps (without a bailout) and now are right behind the Bolt with the leaf, and their entire Luxury line of cars is set offer a hybrid or full electric by 2021. They also have shown off KERS technology in cars like the Project Black-S.
      To be clear I don't disagree, when marketing and sales start to run a large company and engineers are pushed out of those high-level decisions
      you can only expect bad things from it.

    I too found the lack of mentioning Tesla Motors in this video troubling. Tesla Motors put this "Skateboard" design to use well ahead of the rest of the automotive industry that is to include the pitiful GM who took the bailout money they got a ran firing fifteen thousand people just before the holidays. Why is Tesla Motors treated like someone giving a speech at a church event of someone trying to make sure they don't use any curse words?

    Are we going back to Body on the Frame platform from Unibody platform.... maybe this time we use more batteries and motors....

    • @superhollowfied906
      @superhollowfied906 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) are body on frame but you can count with the fingers on your hand how many actual SUVs there are on the market. CUVs (Crossover Utility Vehicles) are the ones that are unfortunately taking over the market. CUVs are unibody.
      This truck that Rivian is showcasing is actually unibody. The "skateboard platform" that Cooley talks about has been implemented in unibody fashion so far. That may change in the future with future vehicles. A great example of a unibody truck is the Honda Ridgeline. It shares the same platform as the Honda Pilot.

    The future will be how many kW can you cram into a vehicle without intruding in to the Frunk, Passenger, Cargo / Bed space. Once high speed / wireless charging is perfected regen braking & its added weight may go away. Rotor style brakes will disappear as well.

      The big breakthrough will be charge dense, resilient *batteries*.

      *But* not ICE /battery.
      Capacitive/ battery will be the way.

    Very strange. You mention Tesla in your title, but "DO NOT" mention or credit them even once with the skateboard design.
    And, GM invented it? LOL. It was an FCV "concept" car. We should not credit "concept" cars with innovation, because by that standard we would already have a Turbine and Nuclear cars.
    Please credit Tesla, because Rivian is using a lot of features they innovated/popularized:
    - Skateboard
    - electric motors
    - OTA update
    - Cylindrical cell battery architecture.
    - Full Glass Roof
    - Single BIG screen replacing knobs
    To not due credit to Tesla is inappropriate. Especially when you are using their name in the title to attract clicks.

      Norway hit 60% (or more?) EV new car sales.
      Try this exercise.
      Assume 2.5% of sales now are EV (that's correct, give or take)
      Double it, (it's happening!) double again, and again and again.
      That's 40% by 2023.
      Before you dismiss it consider the following:
      EV's are generally known very well.
      That will change
      for every EV that sold that's why nice car that isn't sold.
      Manufacturers are deciding they must convert 2 EV's, it follows that for every EV that is manufactured that's one icei car that *isn't* manufactured.
      (Apply to previous point! If they don't make them they can't sell them!)
      Economy of scale for EV's will improve, economy of scale for ICE vehicles will decline, EV's are starting to sell despite *poor* economy of scale, certain categories of ice vehicles are not selling despite *good* economy of scale.
      It's actually undeniable that there are more subsidies applied to fossil fuels then electric power. This will change. Fossil fuels *will* become more expensive. EV's are *already* cheaper to run.
      If you live in a market that favours fossil fuels and associated vehicles, consider that most vehicles are built for a global market. If the majority of markets want electric vehicles that's what *you* are getting!
      Many other points.
