    Morgana actually redeems herself in some versions and even helps Arthur towards the end. In some versions she even saves his life at one point by bringing him to Avalon to be healed. In at least one version of the story that I know of she is the one who tells him about Guinevere and Lancelot, not because she wants to cause discord but because she feels obligated to tell her brother the truth

    Merlin is absolutely not the inspiration for Gandalf, Tolkine hated Arthurian myth and went out of his way to reject its influence, believing it to be a French imposition into English culture. He believed that Arthurian myth had essentially supplanted and erased much of the original Anglo Saxon myth that had been part of early English culture, and that Beowulf was one of the last fragments of a much larger mythological cannon that had once existed.
    Gandalf is specifically inspired by Odin from Norse mythology, and even more so by Väinämöinen from the Finnish Kalevala epic. Tolkien went out of his way on multiple occasions to distance himself from Arthurian myth and corrected speculation of Arthurian influence in Lord of the Rings made in his presence several times. It was specifically a pet peeve of his that people kept bringing up King Arthur when talking about Aragorn, and Gandalf= Merlin would probably be the same.

    • @marseldagistani1989
      @marseldagistani1989 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Would Aragorn be more analogue to someone like Sigurd or Siegfried?
      (More so one the former with the reforging of Gram)
      And I can see Gandalf being analouge to Odin considering that Odin was connected to crows and Gandlaf is referred to as Stormcrow in the Two towers

    • @GrimgoreIronhide
      @GrimgoreIronhide 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@marseldagistani1989 Yes, though Tolkien did delineate between Saxon and Scandinavian myth, he also recognized the overlap. Beowulf was his hero of most specific fascination, but he also translated the Volsung Saga into his Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun with particular passion. He was also deeply fascinated with Sinfjotli, Sigurd's half brother.
      Tolkien had also clearly read the Kalevala, as Turin Tambar bears many close parallels to the anti hero Kullervo, while the scene of his death is almost a one for one match, with Kullervo and Turin both possessing a black magical sword, which they speak to asking it to slay them, to which the sword speaks answering that it will gladly do so.

He was struggling with how to handle the Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot triangle and that's where his translation ends....with Arthur at a decision point regarding how to deal with the other two people in the triangle. Totally missing is the whole Mordred business, too.

    Arthur is Welsh, he fought against Saxons, I always find it interesting how terms like "Bretons/Britons" and "Brythonic" are used to disassociate our history and anglocise it in the process.

      @aeddan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lumpyspacecadet no because at that time Wales and England were a collection of Welsh petty kingdoms known as Prydain, that's where the name Britain comes from (during roman occupation)

    • @aeddan
      @aeddan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Seth White The term Briton was used to describe Welsh, Cornish and Cumbric people before it was repurposed by the English and made into the "British Identity", on top of that you refer to the anglicised story of Arthur, not the original Welsh stories in which the Holy grail version is based. The old celtic stories of the black cauldron that resurrected the dead predating the anglicised story by centuries.
      Also on top of that the reason why we wouldn't have called ourselves Welsh at the time is because "Welsh" is an old Saxon word meaning foreigner, it was used as an insult back then so we would have said either Cymry which meant countrymen or British as that's what the Romans called us. Nice try though 👍🏻

    I wonder if the similarities between Mordred and Bad King John and Arthur and Richard The Lionhearted are intended by the storyteller. While John never openly rebelled against Richard, He did try to seize the throne while Richard was on Crusade and Richard like Arthur had to cut his foreign expedition short in order to return to England and take his throne back from John as Arthur had to recover his from Mordred.
    While John was ruthless and machiavellian, Richard was despite his bloodlust in battle which he sinfully loved, a Just and Chivalrous King. He was also.Good enough to recognize that his love of battle was sinful and the only way he could atone for this was by crusade. Ideally this appealed both to his piety and his battlelust.
    Richard was often seen as impetuous and moved to great extremes of love and war but he was also possessed of wisdom though he is rarely credited with it. Having no heir of his own, he did not execute his brother John as he did not want the plantagenet line to die or be usurped upon his death since he had no legitimate heir. This act of sparing his brother John and upon his death bed making him heir to The English throne though in hindsight seems a disaster since John became Bad King John , it did save the plantagenet line for centuries more and John's Bad rulership led directly to the barons asserting their own power in Magna Carta which in later times became the basis of the rights of all englishmen under common law coming from judicial rulings citing magna Carta as it was the only documented bill of rights of any kind in the world at that time and the common law in its more common unwritten form where common tradition is cited and is the basis of the power of precedent in the courts of all the English speaking peoples.
    So in a sense Ricbard sparing his brother and later making him his heir led direct to The British Empire and The Great Republic( The United States). Sometimes it takes an evil tyrant to force the change that leads to a free society.
    I got way off topic there but my point was there seem to be alot of similarities between Richard I and John The Bad. Derp.

    A bit simplistic, but serviceable to people unfamiliar with Arthurian Romances. The three ladies of the lake from the myth cycle (Vivian, Nyneve and Nimue) are merged into a single person in this, ignoring Nyneve's beheading by Balin. Duke Galehaut is completely ignored, his role in arranging the dalliance between Lancelot and Guenivere. Great knights, Gareth, Sir La Cote Mail Tale, Tor, Ywaine le chevalier au lion, Gawain, Lamorak de Gales, Balin the knight of two swords, and even Arthur's brother Kay are ignored. Even antagonists like Meliagaunce, The King of a Hundred Knights and Sir Brian of the Isles and Agravain are skipped entirely. So, all in all, not bad for introducing an Arthurian neophyte, but disappointing in it's lack of depth to anyone who's read a healthy portion of Mallory or Chretien de Troyes' works compiling the myth cycle and really short of the Vulgate Compendium.

    • @leanne2448
      @leanne2448 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No Galahad is certainly ILLEGITIMATE. Lancelot and Elaine are not married in medieval texts. He sleeps with her believing he's sleeping with the queen. Later authors, often writing for children, tried to sanitize the stories and present Guinevere as a faithful wife (but not Iseult for some reason, probably because no ones cares about Mark). Lancelot needs a new love interest so no readers are suspicious of the close relationship between the queen and her knight, so he is married off to a reformed Elaine and it's all very consensual and there's no affairs or at least no carnal ones

    • @robertalpy9422
      @robertalpy9422 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leanne2448 Well in the story I read he was not illegitimate. Lancelot had abandoned his wife and son to serve Arthur and done so specifically to gain proximity to Arthur's wife. Lancelot wife comits suicide and this causes Lancelot to leave Guinevere until a sentence of death is passed upon her and he comes out of self exile once to save her. She spends the rests of her days in a convent an he as a rabid sort of mendicant obsessed with Penzance.
      Galahad serves Arthur late in the kings life and is the only Knight who is pure enough to touch the holy grail though Percival is allowed to see it but not touch it.
      Were Galahad a bactard he wouldn't be Galahad The Pure and he would never have become a knight or been invited into Arthur's court or been able to fulfill The Grail prophecy. I disagree about him emphatically.
