No you’re not, I forever think of my own mom, she and I loved this film. She passed 4 years ago, and said, remember that cute song we both loved? Of course I did, I played it for her...
The majority of Don Bluths earlier films, such as All Dogs go to Heaven and the Secret of Nimh were his best and more than likely his most memorable. It was sad seeing such a decline in the quality of his work with some exceptions such as Anastasia. I would like to see a good comeback from Bluth, his films fueled my childhood with emotion and imagination. I know I'm not the only one.
Wow. NoOrdinaryGames threw me there, for a second. Yes, Sally Stevens did indeed sing this theme song in "The Secret of NIMH". But her voice is heard not at the end. No, that was Paul Williams. But fear not. Sally's voice does shine with this theme earlier in the film, about 18 minutes from the start. A dreamy voice with a slightly different orchestration. Thanks for highlighting her work.
This morning I had a dream in which I battled a swarm of bad-tempered, gigantic yellow-jackets that had taken over my house. After the awful insects had been destroyed a five-year old girl sat down and sang this song and I sat with her and cried my eyes out. I'm a 35 year old dude and I haven't seen this movie in years. Man, dreams are seriously weird.
Such a beautiful song. Reminds me of being a child.... I played it for my 2 little boys tonight and it put them to sleep just like it did me many times some 35 years ago.
I wish I could play it for my neice and nephews, at least the younger ones. I know it would have the same sweet effect! I was first charmed by it at ten.
Such a beautiful rendition! And as a random additional note, part of me wishes that Elizabeth Hartman provided the voice of Littlefoot's mother in The Land Before Time. I can easily hear her voice saying, "Some things you see with your eyes, others you see with your heart."
A Medieval sound for melody. An eternal himn to love in every form it has. The real key for the meaning of live. Whatever form it has. I love this song. A syntesis for a life.
I always remember the movie and the song. The very first time I’ve heard the death of Elizabeth Hartman, I thought it was after the film. I’ve never realized I misheard the news. It was actually in 1987. Although it was her very last movie.
When I finally got this song on CD several years ago, I cried tears of joy remembering the warmth and beauty of it. My first favorite Don Bluth movie song! Still love the movie too.
OMG I finally found this version! Yes, in the italian release Sally Stevens sings this song (I have the DVD). Considering the movie, the plot, and Mrs. Brisby's character, I think Flying Dreams should be sung by a female voice, and this is the voice I grew up with and it's the version I LOVE! :)
We did a play version of this at school. I played Nicodemus. This is my all time favorite animation movie...This version of the Flying Dreams song really is good, I sing the song as a way to help my nieces & nephews relax, it really works.....LOVE IT
This song has multiple emotions combined. Now if you excuse me, I'm going to go listen to some happy music before I start tearing up because of how beautiful it sounds. Why do I imagine Mrs. Brisby singing this? Unfortunately I learned the unfortunate truth two days back, because I heard the song, but I didn't see Mrs. Brisby's mouth moving like if she were singing it.
I managed to record the movie version of this song by setting my laptop next to the TV with the sound recorder on. Worked quite well. I still have it on my media player.
@@samuelprusa817 Which just shows how complicated life is. An artist helps create a great work, but later in life does something stupid. Or commits a crime. Just goes to show separating art from the artist is super useful if one is to enjoy any art at all.
Hello Sally! Just wanted to say that I would listen to this song as a child during a time that I was very sick - your lovely voice made me feel safe and put me to sleep when nothing else could. Decades later I remembered this and found it here. Listening to you sing the full song after so many years has reduced me to tears. I don't know if you'll ever read this, but thank you so much for that gift.
@@ingonyama70 (chuckles) so in other words, not the same version. o_O just the same song. I prefer her singing to his version. honestly, what a funny comment to get. xD. but thanks! I get to enjoy this again. :)
To this day it's Bluth's best film. I imagine it's because even though it's an animated, family movie, it's not classified as a comedy or a musical, which is the case most of the time. It's really a drama that actually takes itself very seriously, which is probably why it scared so many children.
Nah, the reason is creative freedom. That, and this being his first movie, he tried SUPER HARD to prove himself, even writing a lot of the script himself. Whenever you are super passionate, as well as just a little bit afraid of not being good enough, you make something speshul.

Because of the tape, vinyl, or CD aging, the quality sounds like that of a record from the 60s that didn't get a remaster or rerelease. Thanks MGM, just thank you, we could have gotten a much higher quality remaster to this day if you didn't like lazily release the album. When I open up my M.A.P. Music Entertainment account, I'll just record the whole album with DU screen recorder in case the original videos get taken down.
NotOrdinaryInGames Lets just say MGM/UA entertainment co. gave the film bad luck for not promoting the film themselves or even market it that much. Well at least MGM/UA home video prevented the bad luck from getting worse as the years went by when they released the film on home video which gave MGM some sort of additional profit.
this version of the song and Paul Williams version makes me fall asleep and I like mrs brisby flirting in the movie and the fighting scene The Secret of nimh is a awesome animated movie of the 80s love it.
Hearing this song by Ms. Stevens, I lament even more how Secret of NIMH should have been the smash hit film to revolutionize American feature animation and jumpstart furry fandom on film. Instead, we had to wait over 20 years later for the artists of DreamWorks Animation have the faith, talent and marketing savvy to do that with Kung Fu Panda and for Disney to solidify it with Zootopia.
I don't think any movie would benefit from the reputation of being "a furry movie". If it only appeals to furries, you have a problem with quality. And sorry, but it is not for everyone. Too weird. It's a "cult classic" for a reason.
Weird? If you think powerful animated drama, well told and presented albeit with such a hard edge for the time, is "weird," then that says more about you. The fact it was incompetently marketed and distributed by MGM is no indictment of Bluth's team and their artistry. Furthermore, I didn't say furry as a selling point, but KFP, Zootopia, and Sing showed that the subgenre can sell and I just wished SoN could have had that chance to open that door. After all, in its artistry, it had the key.
NotOrdinaryInGames Since your only response to what I hope is a reasoned response is childish name-calling, I would prefer to be your definition of weird than your normal.
Hmm, you're right. I have the original motion picture soundtrack of the film featuring The National Philharmonic Orchestra on CD in my hands, but it doesn't have this version. It only has the 3 minute 15 second Lullaby version w/ Sally Stevens (track # 3) and Flying Dreams featuring Paul Williams which is 3 minutes 21 seconds duration (track # 7).
This version of the song is on the new blu ray's Italian soundtrack (in English, of course). Sadly it's not in stereo, but it's better than Paul William's version! Also, we had this sung at our wedding in 1986.
I was a kid when I saw this movie, and I had a massive crush on Mrs Brisby. My lord, if the movie's USA end credits song was sung by Sally, I would've swooned imagining that I was hearing the character sing. Instead we got some dude singing. I loved the song regardless and memorized every syllable and note. I was a tween budding artist, and this movie pushed me into fervently upgrading my skills. I drew nothing else except The Secret of NIMH, until I finally could match Don Bluth's animators; you could not tell my drawings apart from the movie's stills (no I didn't just trace, I made up my own scenes). It took a year, IIRC. Then I moved on to copying Akira Toriyama, heheh.
Well, my story is less exciting (maybe). I saw the movie in my early 20s (or was I 19?) and it inspired me to get back into drawing, which I abandoned like most people.
LOL! That "some dude singing" is the co-writer of the song, and many other songs you probably love - like "Rainbow Connection. His name is Paul Williams - who is also currently the president of ASCAP songwriters, and he's an actor as well and one of the top song writers on the planet and he's recorded many albums and songs singing himself.
This song is titled "Flying Dreams," just in case anyone visiting here wondered. Still one of my favorites and this kid at heart is barely in her fifties!! The rest of the melody is part of Jerry Goldsmith's great score.
Love and hate this song. On one hand it fills me with warmth and happiness, gives me hope. On the other hand is makes me sad because the movie is over.
At least for a moment I could go back to my childhood...I can't believe I actually cry of emotions listening to this. That was the golden age of animated movies, wonderful and important pieces or art for us children born in the 80's.
This isn't the only master tape collecting dust. The Secret of NIMH Album has never, EVER been expanded. There are some great highlights, but a lot of the music is fused together, and in some cases, mixed-up as well. MGM just lazily threw the Vinyl Album onto the CD Secret of NIMH release, whereas Lucasfilm went back to the original master tapes for the first CD for Raiders of the Lost Ark. An expanded score is in order for Secret of NIMH, one that includes this song as well as other cues.
@NotOrdinaryInGames I heard it on the Italian ending credits x3 But then one day when I wanted to listen to it again, I found out that TH-cam removed the credits with this pretty song X.x

Is your artwork posted online? I want to see
Love is the key...
It's still kinda interesting to think that the guy who wrote this song is the Penguin.
How can a person love the 2nd movie without being insane?
This song is titled "Flying Dreams," just in case anyone visiting here wondered. Still one of my favorites and this kid at heart is barely in her fifties!! The rest of the melody is part of Jerry Goldsmith's great score.
Everyone knows what it's called, I was trying to avoid deletion.
epic sound!
Thank you!
That is one of my nicest memories, working with Jerry...
Sally Stevens Didn't you contact me already? And you changed your account name?
The blu ray is the U.S. release that just came out and it is in mono.
Jerry Goldsmith = master composer
Incredible range. From this sweet lullaby, to the numerous epic Star Trek scores, to the absolutely terrifying Ave Satani from the Omen.
Love and hate this song. On one hand it fills me with warmth and happiness, gives me hope. On the other hand is makes me sad because the movie is over.
You can always imagine Jeremy giving the entire family a ride a week later. You know, the promotional piece probably drawn by Don himself.
Had no idea Sally Stevens sung an international version of this song. I'm so used to Paul Williams' version XD
You mean the finale version?
*claps for amazing song when appears "thanks for listening"*
@NotOrdinaryInGames I heard it on the Italian ending credits x3 But then one day when I wanted to listen to it again, I found out that TH-cam removed the credits with this pretty song X.x
They don't make songs as powerful as these old ones nowadays.
For Elizabeth Heartmen...R.I.P...
Beautiful. =3
Don Bluth is a great representation for we Mormons, he has done so many great works in film, this is my favorite one of his though I think
"Us Mormons"? LOL
But srsly, if you got a movie made about you, maybe you did something right.
He's a Mormon, nice try at mocking me though #spam
Brad James
You think I don't know that? He is my favorite artist, don't think I didn't do a research.
I'm a Catholic but I got nothing against Mormons.
+Brad James Yes, YOU did well doing this movie, Oh wait, Don Bluth and his life or accomplishments reflect none on you no matter if you share the same bedtime stories.
Happy 35 years
An Aurora presentation
A Don Bluth production
@harukogreed Since you've been looking for it, where did you hear about it in the first place?
Interesting, I never knew this version existed! I assume this was the same person who sang the lullaby version early in the film?
Maybe. I rarely cry, even if the situation requires for it.
@SI3DFilms To do that I need the studio tapes (pre-mixing)
That's freaking impossible.
The opening melody sounds like the Morten Lauridsen’s
song “Dirait-on”
♥️
i want this music but without people singing....someone know where can i find???
Priscila Pereira dos Santos you're better off searching for the ost, it has this melody in at least one song.
Me too. Non i'm 34,i will love still love her
My childhood
