I feel like Sophie may have led Mark to believe that it was Salsa night (rather than him getting details mixed up) because she knew he would never be willing to go to Rainbow Rythms.
I think she probably just didn’t do that because she was so laid back and never read into anything. And I noticed she got a bit tense after season three from getting him him because she might have realised it’s the best she will get after Jeff cheating on her. In all honestly she was a naive pure person that just fell into the scheme of trying to be a person of society and settling because it was all she was taught. Sophie was great and the most depressing character to watch fall. It was the saddest thing to watch about Peep Show.
It’s genius but it also spoofs Mark’s complete inability to relax. I love how Peep Show’s early seasons send up both sides. We empathise with Mark because he thinks things we dont want to admit to thinking, but we also see how his pathetic outlook makes him a very dislikeable failure
I never really thought about Mark's mention of his grandfather in this scene, but he must have been killed in WWII something that is never again mentioned, even when thinking/talking about the war.

Olivia Coleman. She makes Sophie somehow appealing. She’s not beautiful, but she’s cute, and within Mark’s league, unlike Nancy, who isn’t. And at first Sophie seems sweet and kind, although her association with Mark seems to bring out the worst in her and she slowly degenerates as the seasons go on. Would it be better for a guy like Mark to be hung up on someone beautiful and completely unattainable? I see guys who complain about “the Staceys” rejecting them, when they are not particularly attractive themselves. Gotta punch your weight.
He was looking for "The One", not a fun pretty-face fuckbuddy, which Nancy is the living embodiement of. The One in Mark's head is this woman with this motherly charm, a caring nature, soft voice, passive aggressive/non confrontational, etc. Nancy is too American, carefree, wild and extroverted for Mark's dreams of a conservative proper English marriage.
