Firstly, thank you for talking so openly.
I, too, think that the red in your jumper adds to its beauty and uniqueness.
I am a spinner, natural dyer and knitter.
I search out my wool and know where it comes from. I know the farmer, his methods of farming and I orly use organic wool.
I live inland in southern Spain..
I know first hand the value of extensive farming of sheep and I want to support this way of farming.
I wish you well in your endeavours.

I love the red in the sweater, when I studied textiles we studied colour and and I was always told to use a pop of colour with more muted tones, and it really makes the jumper pop. I think it looks great!

i love your initiation to knit with more plant based fibers. being vegan and a knitter has been a complex journey for me as i don't like using man-made fibers much for the plastics, but also don't feel comfortable using animal fibers. and you mention in a later episode how certain cottons can feel very drying and stiff which i agree. you've both inspired me to look into more plant alternatives that i weren't even aware existed, and now i also want to try that beautiful colorwork jumper. i've always been so terrified of colorwork haha

    • @wegrowild
      @wegrowild  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I eat a plant based diet too but since I use animal based fibers sometimes I can't call myself a vegan. I definitely understand your struggle and that's also why I'm trying to learn to knit with plant based fibers and I have to say that is becoming a real pleasure to knit with different ones.
Don't be hard on yourself, you're learning and the sheep don't necessarily need to be traumatized and killed in order to produce some wool. I know, we're still taking from them and that entitlement isn't fair, but we can all learn to give and take with kindness and respect.
Thank you so much for your comment. I hope you'll enjoy knitting with beautiful plant based fibers and knit whatever you like! I was scared to knit the Treysta sweater too but then..🌱🤎👌

Thank you for talking about the issues associated with wool! I know that not all shepherds mistreat animals, but it's so hard to know how the animals have been treated when you buy wool online etc! When I want to use wool, I buy second hand jumpers from charity shops and unravel them :) Then I can be sure that my money isn't contributing to any cruelty. But obviously, each to their own! xxx (I'm binge watching all your videos now!)

    • @wegrowild

I think the sweater w 2 red stripes is fantastic! Plus, you made it! How many people can say that? Not tons! All your sweaters and things are gorgeous. My friend Cori of irocknits podcast held a neutral cone fiber together with all the scraps for a beautiful squishy fisherman’s rib blanket. Pattern is just “knit one, knit one below” for the whole blanket. Use as much or as little of each color as you want

I have heard that Lettlopi yarn is quite an ethical yarn - the sheep have miles and miles of space in the Icelandic countryside and they seem to be well cared for - you can Google for videos about how it is made. No mulesing. It's made by the Icelandic company Istex. And the colours are just gorgeous! (Some people find it a bit scratchy though - I don't, I like it) xx

A suggestion for a blanket...that uses many colors, try the color explosion throw by Cecelia Campochiaro. you can learn more about it on the MDK website...it is really easy, knit in strips, and sewn or crocheted together...I made one using a preset amt of colors, I think it was in the pattern, but after having knit it I feel like it could use more colors. Each section has a marl where you introduce a new color, then that is the new color which you knit with the next color and so on...I used skeins of knitting worsted that i had kicking around forever and used a large needle something like a 13US and it turned out so comfy and cozy with just the right amount of pattern and ease and drape; i love everything about it!

I have heard that in some countries (like Sweden) the farmers/shepherd are fined when they don’t shear the sheep because that is considered cruel. So Swedish/Norwegian brands could be something to look into. Merino is often questionable because of mulesing practices.

Ciao Martina! I am coming to your channel from Francesca's, An Italian Knitter, who mentioned you with great 💚...wow you learned so much so fast and knitted a lot! I love your "scrap" sweater, it really is nice, and I love the red in it and the embroidery, it really is a unique piece...I see you have gotten a lot of suggestions already for your scraps, I am also on a mission to destash, I have A LOT of yarn and I am just getting back to knitting after several years...I don't know how much yarn scraps you have, but you could make "magic balls" knotting them together to make some sort of self striping/designing skein, and if a blanket seems too tedious maybe make more garments out of it. I was also thinking about a blanket at some point, and thought of maybe making some squares of the same size in which I can try out some stitches, each square a different yarn/ and or stitch/pattern and them put them all together...but not sure if/ when I will get to it, I think I would rather knit sweaters! As for the wool, I resonate with what you say, but as others have written there is more growing consciousness of this and companies that treat animals well...you need to research a little...I will be more careful in what I buy in the future once I have destashed...take care, will watch the next episodes 🧶🧶🧶🧶

I really loved this first episode, it inspired me so much to use my stash and make something with it, instead of buying extra. Thank you for that!
I started my own podcast last week too. I hope to share some projects knitted out of my stash very soon. I’ve recently finished a sweater with leftover yarns and I like the final project! I don’t think I would have the patience to knit an entire blanket but I have knit a scarf with leftover yarns a couple of years ago and that’s pretty cozy to wear. I hold a couple of strands together if the yarn was very thin and then used only one strand if the next yarn to use was thicker. Mix and match!
Good luck with the house hunt. I know it’s not fun! We are in the process of finding a place too. Love from Italy

Hello! I have just come across your podcast and I'm watching from the beginning 😊 I completely understand your thoughts behind wool and the treatment of the sheep. Ona similar note, I also wonder about the production of plant based fibers - i.e. whether cotton uses a lot of water and such. I started thinking about it when I switched to plant based milk and learned about the resources the production of almond milk uses up vs oat milk for example. Looking forward to watching more!

We need to remember that it is wrong NOT to shear sheep. It's bad for them because they have been bred to be shorn so NOT using their wool means we are causing them grief. They can NOT let their wool keep growing and growing - it causes so many problems, they get infected in their tail end, the weight of the wool is too much to bear so they NEED to be shorn. I like to get wool from sheep that are treated well and where mulesing is not performed and thankfully there are more places where this is happening. L x
