I think that these canned studio live performances often don't really portray how the band plays live. I don't know what it is, but a lot of the time I feel like they just come off as a little nervous and apprehensive, and I think it's because bands like PUP thrive off of the energy of a crowd. So when they're stuck in a studio with no audience, the energy starts to fall a bit flat. They're definitely the single best show I've ever seen live in my entire life
I was actually so lucky in that regard - got to see these guys, FIDLAR, White Reaper, and Iggy Pop while i was in Portland just last month. Technically not "touring with FIDLAR" but pretty damn close! was my first time seeing PUP and second time seeing FIDLAR (first time was in Toronto)... wish they'd all come to Nova Scotia though...
I love coming back to this band and wonder why I always forget about them after listening to them heavy. Then to remember them again a year or so later, then rinse and repeat.
"guilt trip" reminds me of an early weezer but a lot more gritty and raw...I wish weezer would have kept that sound. I like how PUP has different sounds for each song though. They keep it fresh.
Saw these guys a few years ago in Montreal. They were opening for Titus Andronicus/Ceremony, and playing under a different name. Had a beer and chatted with the drummer a bit during the other shows. Very chill guy, and they absolutely killed it on stage. Great energy. Glad to see they're making it!
I dont understand how good these guys are. I almost missed out on them completely because i saw the album cover and i thought it was gonna be some shitty indie band or a shitty rapper. but damn was i wrong.
I saw them in Detroit on a whim just based on a video on youtube. I ended up becoming friends with the bass player, who is an amazing dude, genuinely very nice, I bought the vinyl record and loved it.
He's picking the strings above the nut. Causes a droning effect. He's essentially finger tapping ghost notes and droning. Watch his left hand hammer on and off. Plug in and try it. Creates weird droning feedback
TheN0X St Pete's right? Yeah, I was there too. We were talking about it later and he was really hoping someone got a picture or video. He also said he got a concussion in Nashville when he fell off a stack of boxes during a show. Real blood, sweat, and tears, you know?
This band should be a 3 piece. But I dont get to dictate everything. Yeah I should shut my fucking mouth, the bass player would sing vocals in my fantasy.
To be honest, I've seen them a couple times live, and this recording doesn't do them justice. They opened for AFI back in January, and they were the only opening act I've ever seen that made me feel compelled to buy their CD after the show. If you get the chance, see them live. They're fantastic.
yeah Stephan sings much better normally idk i'm cringing a little at this because its not nearly as good when i saw them early last year. trust me he's much better normally
Late to the party here, but this was recorded shortly before Stefan Babcock (the lead singer) was diagnosed with a cyst on his vocal cords. He got the news in October of 2014, I believe. Doctor told him to shut it down or risk losing his voice completely, and that he likely wouldn't be able to sing again...certainly wouldn't be able to tour. At one point, this doctor said to him "The dream is over." And all that did for Stefan was provide him with the name of Pup's next album.
I know I am way late in seeing this, but I really want to point out that the vocals are far to low in spots. Also the bass is being blasted far to high, especially in Yukon. Other than that, it was awesome seeing some of the techniques they use when playing and hearing them live. Mad props to some amazing work all around for them. They always give it their all and I appreciate it so much.
Time to get Pup back on KEXP! 3 more studio albums have came out since this performance.
Punk rock is not fucking dead
+Hayden Land as a punk rock loving Canadian I cant complain
is
These guys get an album or two more under their belts and they're gonna be big.
They had a very solid first album as well !
+Ron Johnson not to mention a pretty solid second album
And an upcoming third.
a fantastic third came out a couple of days ago
You called it.
I fucking love the bass distortion.
summers sounds like Raw Power
I love how the filming person/people didn't exclusively film the vocalist
Did I just find my new fav band?
Thanks KEXP
you did highschool version of myself. now im all grown but still love this music lmao
Love this self reply ahhaha
That tele has the perfect tone I swear to God
I love how they’re genuinely happy to play

Holy shit they sound so much better live!

TLDR version, this is good, but actually seeing them is fucking incredible
Also, side note, if they ever toured with FIDLAR, I'd lose my fucking mind

Don't sleep on these guys as musicians. They're a tight band.
I love coming back to this band and wonder why I always forget about them after listening to them heavy. Then to remember them again a year or so later, then rinse and repeat.
Super sick! Super noisy! Super hot fire! Not only are the songs great , but all their music videos strum My heart strings .

0:20 Guilt Trip

Fucking awesome! PUP is fantastic!! Easily one of my new favorite bands.
This performance was on spot from the very start. I’m so glad this band defined my teenage years.
"guilt trip" reminds me of an early weezer but a lot more gritty and raw...I wish weezer would have kept that sound. I like how PUP has different sounds for each song though. They keep it fresh.

Alex Baillie ceremony 🤘🏽
Such an amazingly tight set. I love this band!
I learned something today, and that is PUP is awesome. I hope we hear so much more from these guys. Canadian rock rules!
They are so good live. Crazy energy and sound fantastic.
looking for the new album found this.. glad i did!
no mabu:( fav off that album tbh
I dont understand how good these guys are. I almost missed out on them completely because i saw the album cover and i thought it was gonna be some shitty indie band or a shitty rapper. but damn was i wrong.
I had the same experience. I almost skipped them entirely because of their album art, but I'm so fucking glad I didn't.
This is my favorite band. Rock on guys
My two favorite bands of the 2010’s are both Canadian. Pup and peach pit.
I saw them in Detroit on a whim just based on a video on youtube. I ended up becoming friends with the bass player, who is an amazing dude, genuinely very nice, I bought the vinyl record and loved it.
Topanga
ty kexp for all of your beautifully shot and mastered videos. :)
Steve rules.
Gonna see these guys on valentines day as the support for smith st band. So i thought i better check them out. These guys are fucking sick!!
The best from Toronto! See you guys when you get back home for Riot Fest. Cheers guys! Will say hi to Menno for you guys when I see him.

These guys make soooo much noise!!!
Holy fuck I love that bass tone
I wish they’d come back on the show to play some songs from Morbid Stuff
my favorite fucking band
Caught these guys at Riotfest by accident. Wow did they bring it down!!!!!! They even did an oncore/cover of the Dead Kennedys 2 drunk 2 fuck!

f-u-c-k me sideways. That's the best thing I've heard this year so far, besides my son farting that is. That shit's just too funny.
This band is fucking incredible!
WOW, can't believe I'm just discovering them now and tickets for the Toronto show are sold out :(.
Why is this so good???
steve is such a good guitarist oh my god
im getting a weezer vibe from "guilt trip" :)
True , the lead guitar melody makes it seem like that
Unique style, dig it.
I never knew Pup played on KEXP !
Tûññêlrãt yeah its awesome knowing that one of my favorite bands played right by my house
they are so amazing wow
tHIS IS FUCKING AWESOME
woooooooooow!!!!
This band is tight af.
yukon is so so good
second song has a total Strokes vibe, I love these guys
I wish they would play in Vancouver..
It's crazy that there's no difference on Stefan's Voice when he sings those songs live❤️
i’d argue that he sounds a lot better live (or at least recently since he got his vocal chords fixed up)
Stefan’s tone is NA$TY here holy fuckin FUCK
hellz yes
Sick shit.
at some points i hear some pinkerton era weezer
I'm so glad I am not crazy, that vibe is what made me really enjoy them more. Especially as Pinkerton being my favorite.
BandUponFalling yup me too so maybe that's why we hear it lol
That Tokai SG guitar... Nice to see cheap guitars making awesome music! :D
that's les paul dude
The guitar the leadsinger uses on Yukon is a Tokai :)
Frederik Lippert Ooo
sarcastic rock music has finally met my generation. Too bad I'm a few years late.
Badass..
Saw these guys in Lincoln - and they stole the show!
The drummer has a Kvelertak shirt.
Cheers from Norway
best interviewer ever
First heard this band when playing NHL. Then saw them with MOBO and died. Incredible band
Holy shit I loved their album but they're even better live- anybody know what technique the guitarist is using at 1:06 ? Its a really cool sound
He's picking the strings above the nut. Causes a droning effect. He's essentially finger tapping ghost notes and droning. Watch his left hand hammer on and off. Plug in and try it. Creates weird droning feedback
Didn't realize this was released on my birthday. I suppose this connection was meant to be
illlyyyyyyyy
The Strokes, Black Flag, and Modest Mouse meet.
Ramona Jeanne I'd say a not Irish/Canadian version of flogging molly combined with sorority noise
+Logan Plourde love sorority noise but, No. they're nothing like sorority noise
the first song sounds like it came off pinkerton
more like Weezer + The Floral Green era of Title Fight
I also hear the Pixies.
I don't usually like the screamo-ey vox but these guys fucking killlllllllll. Yikes - that guitarist is good. Love those spicy exotic scales.
THE STROKES GREEN DAY PUP ITS FUCKING GOOD
Cheesy petes, these guys are what I aspire to be.
so i was at warped tour yesterday and saw the lead singer trip on an amp
TheN0X haha shit happens
TheN0X St Pete's right? Yeah, I was there too. We were talking about it later and he was really hoping someone got a picture or video. He also said he got a concussion in Nashville when he fell off a stack of boxes during a show. Real blood, sweat, and tears, you know?
dextrose ya
Is it me or are their songs much better live?
fking hell 16:53
fucking shit kexp I content but dark days all ways gets me pumped. pups the ish. nothings better after a long day
Damn they started off a little bot rough with Guilt Trip there but holy shit did they recover.
you mean the intro? Im pretty sure it was supposed to be like that
This band should be a 3 piece. But I dont get to dictate everything.
Yeah I should shut my fucking mouth, the bass player would sing vocals in my fantasy.
So they would be a lot worse but sound a little more niche in your fantasy
the lead singers voice is bad but its still good. so weird. But i love it. his yelling is great though. its not the typical good voice singers have.
To be honest, I've seen them a couple times live, and this recording doesn't do them justice. They opened for AFI back in January, and they were the only opening act I've ever seen that made me feel compelled to buy their CD after the show. If you get the chance, see them live. They're fantastic.

Pup Vs. Pulp
Nestor looks like Ian Farmer here lmaooo
PUP is just a Pathetic use of potential as far as I'm concerned! ;oP
When you try to be a troll but everyone already gets the joke
sounds like weezer
This performance was better than the album
anyone know their names?
lead singer is stefan, zack is on drums, nestor on bass, and steve on guitar
thanks
