Del Shannon was NEVER CONSIDERED to join the Traveling Wilburys. No one was other than the five original and only members. This is an urban legend that has been repeated so many times that people accept it as truth. No one has ever been able to show me any actual evidence that Del was in fact considered. But I have found several sources confirming that the four remaining members after Roy Orbison died never considered replacing him, or otherwise adding another member.
I always wondered why they didn't invite other friends like Eric Clapton or why they didn't get together to collaborate for more music aside from a couple of tracks in each of their albums. Nonetheless, it's unfortunate Del Shannon couldn't join them, and at least Roy Orbison got a comeback. RIP to all (Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, George Harrison, and Tom Petty)
No one - not Del Shannon, not anyone - was slated to join the Traveling Wilburys after Roy Orbison's death. That is a rumor that has been repeated so many times, people just accept it even though there is no evidence to support it.
@@fabianugalde3789 The Wilburys literally fell into place. No one was invited. George and Jeff had several wine-infused talks about creating a band, and who they would invite. George wanted Bob, and Jeff wanted Roy. But, when it happened, they didn't realize they were forming a band. They just all happened to be there for the completion and recording of Handle With Care, which was intended to be the B side of a 12-inch European single release, from George's Cloud Nine album. When the record company told him the song was good to throw away there, he went back to the others and asked if they could do a full album. It would have been forced and awkward to go invite someone else.
This is one of those few covers that might just eclipse the original. Exceptional song that ELO just crushes, a true-to-Del version that is timeless tribute to one of the most under appreciated talents of the rock and roll era.....He helped bridge the gap between Elvis and the Beatles, along with Ricky Nelson and countless R&B/Motown greats. Tragic loss. Great great artist.
You have done justice to this Del Shannon classic of course he has the awesome musical genius that is Mr. Jeff Lynne saw him in Leeds AWESOME Love all his music

Was hooked on the incredible ELO first time I seen them on TV (Rollover Beethoven) BUT I agree Dels version is better, something so pure and emotional in Dels
This should have been the backing that Del did not have in his final take. Dels backing sounds very thin but his take 3 is similar to this one. Why he changed it I do not know. Mr Lynn was very respectful of Dels music.
ellovand jeff rarely do coverrs but elo did y4this song and thev wilnurrys did runaway, del was dur to be a wilbury, but fatrr intervened. imagine the wilburys with del. wow.
Jeff was getting Del, Roy Orbison, and George Harrison an I think Bob Dylan together to do an album when Del Shannon shot himself in the head. He was on the way back up. He suffered from depression and he had just started taking Prozac. His wife said he was looking forward to everything again. I think there may be some videos out there of them all together, I KNOW there are pictures. Just Google it all if you want to know.
You are confusing your Traveling Wilburys information. Jeff, Roy, George, Bob, plus Tom Petty formed the Traveling Wilburys in 1988. They released their first album, then Jeff and Roy returned their attention to Roy's album Mystery Girl. Then Roy died in December 1988. Then Jeff was working with Del Shannon on what proved to be his last album. Del died in February 1990. The remaining four Wilburys reconvened and recorded their second album in the Spring of 1990. Because Jeff was working with Del in January and February, then with the other Wilburys by April, an urban legend has popped up based on rumors and speculation that Del would have been a good addition to the Wilburys and/or that he was considered or asked. I have never found a shred of evidence to support this. Rather, I have found interview quotes and video clips of the Wilburys saying they never considered replacing Roy, or adding another member for any reason.
@@ashley-fy4yl Jeff started this song in 1979, but didn't finish it until 2001, when he was with Rosie. She did provide the backing vocals and the song was released as a bonus track to Discovery.
It was not on the original album. I read that Don't Bring Me Down was written and recorded last in the studio. I wonder if they recorded this one as a back up in case Jeff couldn't write a song in time...recording studio time being expensive.
@@paulmckearney4945 When he needs to, Jeff can knock out a song in 30 minutes. Don't Bring Me Down was a last minute addition because he felt Discovery needed a rocker. He banged it out and did a good job of it. I suspect that the initial work on Little Town Flirt was more of a pet project of Jeff's, and was never intended to be on the album. He didn't finish it until over 20 years later.

Jeff Lynne can do it all. He is fantastic in everything he does in music!
So true to Del’s classic.. including the falsetto!
I love how this version is so true to the original!
I listen to this any time I feel down. It picks me right up again. Thank you Jeff and ELO.
Del Shannon would be proud. Old school made new - with respect and class.
Couldn't say it better. ELO....amazin'.
ELO was pure class
@@storm7586 totally agree 👍
God I love ELO!
Great cover of a great song ! Thanks for the memories
Jeff Lynn’s embrace of 1st generation roots rock n roll sounds forever fresh, masterful and so, so endearing.
Excellent cover, it would hard to top this version. Jeff is a genius.
Jeff Lynne is the best! He can do it all...Amazing singer, musician and producer!
So cool when good or great musicians show respect to those who came before them.
This is a bonus track. Love it x
Jeff Lynne thanks for doing Del Shannon's so beautifully. Del and Jeff two great talents! I love you both!
Just turned 49, massive fan of the Del Shannon original, can’t believe i’ve never heard this version before.

Jeff Lynne's a huge Del Shannon fan. Del Shannon was slated to join the Traveling Wilbury's after Roy Orbison's passing but he killed himself. RIP

Jeff loved Del Shannon stuff, produced his Rock On album for him.
In my opinion the best LP Del ever released. Some great tracks on it.
Everything a tribute should be!

I prefer this one over del shannon his version
Takes a few liberties with the chord progression of the original- making an even sweeter confection...
i'm curious what liberties you're referring to... it sounds like a paint-by-numbers cover to me. the song's only like 5 or 6 chords anyway.
