That's one of the qualities that makes me love Hole's 'Northern Star' so much. Courtney Love's vocals are rough and ragged as always (although she holds back on the scream-singing until the climax), playing against the increasingly military-march-like drumbeat and orchestral strings. It's a really striking and dramatic contrast and it helped me to appreciate her singing voice.
There were some great post-grunge bands that came out of the 90s, and Bush was at the top of that list. Gavin Rossdale's voice was truly something to behold (especially LIVE). You've done this and "Comedown". Some of their other bangers include "Swallowed", "The Chemicals Between Us", "Little Things", and maybe their best song, "Machinehead". Some other bands in this lane that I think you would love are Seven Mary Three ("Cumbersome"), 3 Doors Down ("Kryptonite"), Nickelback ("How You Remind Me"), Creed ("Higher"), Breaking Benjamin ("So Cold"), Seether ("Fine Again"), Fuel ("Hemorrhage (In My Hands)") and Silverchair ("Tomorrow"). More than any of these bands, though, I would recommend the band called Live (pronounce like in "alive"). Their songs "Selling the Drama", "Pain Lies By the Riverside", "Lightning Crashes", and "Lakini's Juice" are some of the best songs of that decade. Anyone agree?
I’d also like to add a few if I may. Blink 182- Dammit, Eve6- Inside Out, Papa Roach- Last Resort, Sum41- Fat Lip, Smashing Pumpkins- Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Offsping- Come out and Play (even though I think they’d love Pretty Fly for a White Guy), and lastly for a female Friday No Doubt- Spiderwebs
@@dannysalamon5731 Jay actually did Pretty Fly For a White Guy EARLY in the channel's run, before Amber joined. "Come Out and Play" would be a great choice, as would "Gone Away". And HELL YEAH, Smashing Pumpkins is overdue for a reaction!
You need to hear Candlebox- “Far Behind” P.S. - The Bush lead singer is Gavin Rossdale. He was married to Gwen Stefani for a long time. You want some uptempo Bush? Try Machinehead or Comedown
God this song takes me back to a moment in time, being 18, living with my cousin in our first apartment. He was sitting on his guitar Amp in the hall, strumming this song while I was in the kitchen and we just sat there and sang it together. It was a quiet, peaceful moment that stands out in my brain anytime I hear this now. Not sure why it's so vivid, but music really can transport you through time!
Haha my wife worked as a nanny for an infant and a 2 year old when we were younger and she said that line encapsulated that perfectly they are there and they need you but you are on your own to deal with them.
@@Hanrahan46 Live was such a great (and massively underrated) band. Lightning Crashes and Lakini's Juice are phenomenal songs. I would add "Selling the Drama" and "Pain Lies on the Riverside". Ed Kowalczyk's voice.... wow.
There was a short-lived tv show called...oh crap now I can't remember, something about luck. A kid who is the sole survivor of a plane crash, grows up to have horrible luck that always seems to be just good enough to keep him going, helping people out cause he believes it's his mission. There's an episode about him trying to stop an incorrect execution with the help of the true guilty murderer. At the climax they play Lightening Crashes, which was my first Live exposure. LOVED IT.
Love Bush. So many good songs, other good ones are Comedown, Little Things, machinehead & Everything Zen. Now I have to go listen to some more Bush! It takes me back to better time!
Other Bush songs to check out are "Comedown", "Machine Head", "Little Things", "Everything Zen", "Swallowed", "Mouth", "Greedy Fly", and "The Chemicals Between Us" . Gavin Rossdale (the lead singer) also did a collaboration with Blue Man Group, "The Current", that is a cool rock track to listen to.
Pretty much the entirety of Sixteen Stone is worth a listen. I'll pick and choose off Razorblade Suitcase, but Sixteen Stone I usually just let play on through.
The Seattle grunge band you haven't listened to yet is Candlebox. "Far Behind" is one of their most popular songs and it is about the death of Andrew Wood who was the spiritual godfather of Seattle grunge.
Not sure why they weren't more popular. IMO...easily the best guitars of the grunge scene and vocals second only to Chris Cornell. Long after Nirvana and Pearl Jam tapes found their way out of my car, Candlebox was my goto driving music.
My son is actually named after the lead singer, "Gavin"... I always loved this band and I was a teenager when I first heard his name, thought it was awesome. Back then there were no Gavin's around .. but I'm blessed for sure . He's the greatest gift God could ever give me. 💞🙏🏻
"I'm never alone.....I'm alone all the time" One of the best lines ever written. Who hasn't felt that way at one point or another in their lives alone even in a crowd
Can't believe you picked this song! Beautiful song. This was "our song" for my ex boyfriend and I. We are still good friends and every once and a while he will call and play this for me on guitar. Lovely love song...the lead singer used to be married to Gwen Stefani. Ps. I associate songs with happy memories. I always liked this subscriber group because everyone is so kind in their remarks . I guess the gentleman who made the below comment is having a bad day. Hope it gets better, Dave
The whole Sixteen Stone album is great. Check it out. I saw them in concert on that tour like a million years ago with No Doubt and the Goo Goo Dolls. It was a blast. I got to meet Gavin and a couple of the guys after the show on their way to their bus. Great show, great memories. Solid choice you two.

I love the contrast in how the two of you listen to the song. Where one of you is slow moving on every 4 beat, and the other on over 2 beats. So good seeing a visual of how differently people listen to the same music.
Had the pleasure of seeing Bush live three times. They were my favorite band of the era along with Our Lady Peace. Our Lady Peace had a truly unique sound and you should absolutely check them out, their song Clumsy is so cool and just plain different.
I remember watching MTV Spring Break back in the day and it started raining during their performance. Despite the producers telling Gavin he was probably going to be electrocuted onstage, he didn’t give a fuck and just kept playing. One of the most incredible musical performances I’ve ever seen.
This is one of my favorite songs of all times, thank you for responding. The words and the grit meant so much to us in the 90’s. And he has a particular story, the could have been is the three line . Thankfully I didn’t get that part back then.
I fell in love with this song, after I lost a love of my life after 2 years. I would go for a drive the city, late at night when everyone would be asleep. The streets would be empty, green lights from one end of the city to the other. Smoking a bowl, listening to glicorine, on cool summer nights, music blaring, feeling high and free. This song takes me back to my best moments of the late 90's.
Bush is one of my all time favorite bands of the 90s, grew up listening to them. In late 2011 I was getting ready to move abroad. One night I was leaving downtown Nashville to head home when I stopped at a venue to use the restroom. On the door was posted an ad for Bush coming to concert soon, but it would've been after I had flown out of the country. I prayed (not literally) for my tripped to get delayed. The next day I received a message that it had to be delayed. I went to the show and it was one of the most awesome concerts in my life.
"Glycerine" was Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale's love letter to his then-gf (not Gwen Stefani 😂)back in 1993... The track was all Rossdale on guitar, accompanied by a cello... which was sonically perfect w/ the lyrics. It was also sonically so different cos there were no drums or bass. It became a huge hit back in 1995.
I've seen Bush in concert four times. Once at Rocklahoma!! They always put on a great show and they sound great live. They have good songs. I'd suggest Little Things, Comedown, and Machinehead
I remember when this song first came out and there was just nothing like it. Did you notice there was no percussion? The rhythm guitar does all the timekeeping. It's still amazing to listen to even after all these years. If you like this blend of rock and strings, you may want to check out some Apocalyptica. They are a Finnish band of cellists who play metal. Some people call it symphonic metal. They had an album, Worlds Collide, about a decade ago that was all the rage. Different singers from popular bands collaborated with them. "I'm Not Jesus" with Corey Taylor of Slipknot, "Helden" with Till Lindemann of Rammestein, and "I Don't Care" with Adam Gontier of 3 Days Grace, were my favorites. Helden is in German, but may be a familiar tune if you've heard much David Bowie.
wow. what a great, insightful reply. you're so informed. i never even noticed the lack of percussion. and definitely going to look into apocalyptica. thanks so much for the information!
Your girl Amber is right!!!! It is like these guys grew up listening to Pink Floyd...Black Sabbath...Deep Purple.....and Led Zeppelin.....and decided to poetically express the primal dark side of the human experiences as their predecessors did. That is "Grunge!!!" which was labeled by music critics. To them it just hardcore Rock n' Roll....and they all hard authentic great vocals with great drumming and guitar players!!!! Excellent reaction.
Gavin is only a year and a half older than I am. We are GenX, and the early GenX like me that went to high school basically in or around ‘81-‘85 WERE listening over half the time to Led Zep, Pink Floyd and the like. Yeah we had sone great 80’s music to listen to, but classic rockers from the late 60’s to late 70’s got a great deal of our listening time. It shaped what we listened to as we got older. For those who were musically gifted in our generation it shaped what they produced. That’s right GenX gave the world Grunge, post-grunge and much of the good 90’s music based on what they listened to as kids.
Gavin (lead singer) wrote "Glycerine" about his relationship with his girlfriend at the time. Glycerine is a chemical used in perfumes and medicines and also to preserve food. The title comes from the explosive applications of glycerine to stabilize nitro. He said the song was about how love was like a bomb. Imagine that thought process!
Jay and Amber. Here are some songs from the mid to late 60s for you guys to react to: WILD THING/The Troggs. This song charted at #1 (Billboard Hot 100) for two weeks in 1966. 2:35 video. I'M HENRY VIII, I AM/Herman's Hermits. This song charted at #1 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1965. 1:56 video. SUNSHINE SUPERMAN/Donovan. This song charted at #1 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1966. 3:17 video. WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL/The New Vaudeville Band. This song charted at #1 (Billboard Hot 100) for three weeks in 1966. 2:24 video. THE LETTER/The Box Tops. This song charted at #1 (Billboard Hot 100) for 4 weeks in 1967. 1:53 video. IN THE YEAR 2525/Zager & Evans. This song charted at #1 (Billboard Hot 100) for 6 weeks in 1969. 3:21 video. GREEN TAMBOURINE/The Lemon Pipers. This song charted at #1 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1968. 2:33 video. BECAUSE/Dave Clark Five. This song charted at #3 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1964. 2:23 video. FOR YOUR LOVE/The Yardbirds. This song charted at #6 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1965. 2:30 Shindig video. NEVER MY LOVE/The Association. This song charted at #2 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1967. 3:08 video. Enjoy.
i'd add blue cheer's 1967 song, "summertime blues." cowritten by rockabilly icon eddie cochran and his manager jerry capeheart, it barely charted in 1958 on the BH100, topping out at number 8 and then swiftly fading into obscurity. san francisco's blue cheer got hold of it in 1967 and proceeded to kick out ALL the jams. leigh stephens was a BEAST on electric guitar. the band was an explosive answer to a question that nobody knew had been asked, and it's still so strong that people new to the genre assume that they're contemporary. and years after this song and that band burst onto the scene, they have garnered so much prestige and so much respect that, today, they are regarded by music historians and People Who Know Things as the original metal band, a prototype for the ramones and ... i'll stop now, lol. i've broken my exuberant-verbosity meter. oh! also, i'd add several of the songs by the spencer davis group when stevey winwood was singing with them. "i'm a man," "gimme some loving," that kind of stuff. going now. really. i'm sorry for all the words.
In the dictionary of my mind....when I look up "grunge"....this is the picture/sound/song. Grunge guitar...grunge voice....grunge clothing....grunge storyline. Superb piece of music!
Not sure who steered you to this ballad for your first listen of Bush... They totally rock and I know Jay WANTS TO ROCK! Try "Machine Head", 'Everything Zen", "Comedown", "The Space Between Us", etc.
Gavin and rest of the guys really knew how to transport you in another level. Grunge is so deep all raw! This song opened up so many emotions! Miss these days! Thanks
I've gotten to know you guys over the past couple of months and I'm very happy to see how open minded you both are when it comes to new music. I saw Bush the most recent time about 2 months ago and I will say that if you've never seen them live, do yourself a favor and go. They are phenomenal. You also might want to give a listen to Flowers on a Grave, Machine head, Little Things, Everything Zen, Letting the Cables Sleep, Chemicals Between Us, and More than Machines. Seriously... this band is amazing.
You guys have to do Smashing Pumpkins….great Emo Grunge/Alternative band. Very diverse. I recommend Soma, Thru the Eyes of Ruby, Mayonnaise., Tonight, Tonite. Awesome stuff!!!!!!
*Maybe I can get some help here* .... in that others may also suggest *Tomorrow by Silverchair.* I got to see BUSH here at the Roseland some ten plus years ago. Really good band.
I love the love you have for Bush. My favorite all time band. Please please ,. Listen to “Little Things” and “Swallowed” you will not be disappointed. Bush is a very underrated band who is still amazing in concert
This song and the video are exquisite is very impactful. The album is called Sixteen Stone. EVERY SONG on this album is amazing. I am 39 and I got my Dad to buy me this CD when I was 10 because I got a Sony CD walkman from my Grandparents as a gift for my birthday. Bush was on the radio all over the place at the time. Being in the car or have the radio on a home or having MTV on the the TV were the only way to hear these songs. Sometimes, counties would cancel MTV or "rock stations", too. It had so much of and impact on me I still remember very clearly.
I was in the Navy when I first heard it and I used to mess with this one sailor about the name of the song which sounds like he said, “Listerine.” A couple of times I held up a bottle of Listerine as he says it.
I saw them in concert when I was about 15, and No Doubt opened for them. Gavin came out and played this song for the encore…ACOUSTIC…and it was heavenly!!!
Although many still consider Bush a grunge band they were actually more associated with post- grunge, and alternative rock. They were actually one of the first bands to be labeled as post Grunge.
That was beautiful to watch! I have so much respect and love for young people who explores our 90’s music! We had a blast back then. I love this song, it was part of my youth and I loved how you both got into it and seemed to really feel the music ❤
You should check out "Lakini's Juice" by Live. Live was an extremely unique alternative band in the 90s and lead singer Ed Kowalczyk has an amazing voice.
Wowwww. My Gosh. I have heard this song about a bajillion times since the 90s. I have not sat and reaaaaaally listened to it in so long. What a reaction! Ive been so jaded to this song for knowing it so long and to hear it fresh again through your amazing appreciation to it. Thankyou! 🙏🏼
…Also if you ever want to hear some Australian grunge, try some early silverchair. Start off with their first single Tomorrow. They were ust 14 years old!

I LOVE you guys!! So glad you got to experience BUSH. The most underrated band. Going to see them for the 4th time in June. Check them out sometime. Gavin is amazing ❤
When I was in college, Bush, No Doubt, and Goo Goo Dolls were touring together. Such an awesome concert! Gavin Rossdale was not as "lively" a performer as Johnny Rzeznik and Gwen Stefani. He was much more stoic on stage, but his voice was so incredible, it didn't matter.
When the album Sixteen Stone came out I was 14yo. I found my first CD that I could play the whole thing on repeat. Really found my love for music with that CD.
I've been waiting for you guys to do a Bush song reaction! One of my faves! Been to around 10 Bush shows over the years. Love their music! Glycerine, Machinehead, Comedown (please do this song next), Little Things, Everythings Zen... the entire Sixteen Stone album is great. My best memory of this song being performed was during the Sunset Strip Music Festival back in 2011. They went on right before Motley Crue. The sun was setting over the Hollywood Hills and we all had a front row seat to an unforgettable performance. Euphoric moment!
HIs gritty voice with the violin in the background is a beautiful dichotomy.
Absolutely...also for me, it's the over-driven Strat and the violins and the cello, brilliant.

Idk how I’ve never noticed that before! 😳 wow
Such a great band, lots of good songs. 😍
Love Bush. "Little Things" and "Come Down" are my favorites by them.
I forgot how beautiful this song is
Bush has many great songs. Definitely do more from them!
From early '90s check out:
Jesus Jones "Right Here Right Now"
EMF "Unbelievable"
I'm so glad you guys are loving Bush. They have a lot of great songs. One of my personal favorites is Mouth 🙂
Love Bush! They are so underrated! You need to watch them live!
They were extremely popular from 1994-1997. I wouldn't call them underrated. They were a top act.
🤘😍 I loved BUSH SO MUCH and Gavin Rossdale that I named my son Gavin 😍 he's 23 now and loves telling people how he got his name 😍
My fave is "Mouth" featured in "An American Werewolf in Paris". Love it!

Enjoy.
i'd add blue cheer's 1967 song, "summertime blues." cowritten by rockabilly icon eddie cochran and his manager jerry capeheart, it barely charted in 1958 on the BH100, topping out at number 8 and then swiftly fading into obscurity. san francisco's blue cheer got hold of it in 1967 and proceeded to kick out ALL the jams. leigh stephens was a BEAST on electric guitar. the band was an explosive answer to a question that nobody knew had been asked, and it's still so strong that people new to the genre assume that they're contemporary. and years after this song and that band burst onto the scene, they have garnered so much prestige and so much respect that, today, they are regarded by music historians and People Who Know Things as the original metal band, a prototype for the ramones and ... i'll stop now, lol. i've broken my exuberant-verbosity meter.
oh! also, i'd add several of the songs by the spencer davis group when stevey winwood was singing with them. "i'm a man," "gimme some loving," that kind of stuff. going now. really. i'm sorry for all the words.
I love Bush there are a few great songs and Gavin's unique voice.
That is a great sweatshirt . Sharp... I'm gonna have to check out that merch site . I'm gonna have to get myself a sweatshirt now .... lol 😆 🤣
I was twelve when this came out fell in love still to this day always has been my favorite band! Love them❤
In the dictionary of my mind....when I look up "grunge"....this is the picture/sound/song. Grunge guitar...grunge voice....grunge clothing....grunge storyline. Superb piece of music!
The voilins the voilins!!! The contrast to the rock abd the lyrics.. honestly one of the greatest songs of the 90s
I LOVE Bush. I was on a concert once it was one of the best concerts i ever have been. Since them i love them.
Not sure who steered you to this ballad for your first listen of Bush... They totally rock and I know Jay WANTS TO ROCK! Try "Machine Head", 'Everything Zen", "Comedown", "The Space Between Us", etc.
Thank you!
Pretty sure they reacted to "Comedown" already.
Machine head has maybe my favorite opening of a song....
@@brenspin Yes, they did.
@@brenspin I think they got the Comedown suggestion from me. It is so great that they are getting more into Bush.
Yes ”Swallowed” and “Greedy Fly” are two of my favorite Bush songs. Also love “machine head” and “come down”
Gavin and rest of the guys really knew how to transport you in another level.
Swallowed is amazing also. Its about heroin addiction. 😞 Gavin Rossdale, lead vocals, was my CRUSH back in the day!!! Yum yum
That was beautiful to watch! I have so much respect and love for young people who explores our 90’s music! We had a blast back then. I love this song, it was part of my youth and I loved how you both got into it and seemed to really feel the music ❤
The 90s..the last great decade of everything. The last great decade of mostly authenticness and realness!! Glad i got to experience the 90s!!!
You should check out "Lakini's Juice" by Live. Live was an extremely unique alternative band in the 90s and lead singer Ed Kowalczyk has an amazing voice.
Such a good song, Gavin Rossdale (lead singer) is Gwen Stefani’s childrens father
Hat tip Rob, you did marry a true beauty. Thanks for all the smiles! Great reaction.
This is my fuckin' jam since i was 10 and saw it on MTV. Also, the live performance of this song in the rain.....dude.
Greedy Fly is my favorite Bush song. It goes hard. You'll dig it.
Wowwww.
Some other great songs worth reacting to: "Far Behind"- Candlebox, "Perfect"- Simple Plan, "Tomorrow"- Silverchair, "Selling The Drama"- Live, "Drift And Die"- Puddle Of Mudd, "Rise Above This"- Seether, "Let It Die"- Foo Fighters, these are ALL 🔥🔥🔥 YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD WRITE THESE DOWN!!!!!
And the fact that Silverchair were teenagers was amazing- even appearing on SNL as just kids
My song pick from "Puddle Of Mudd" would be "Blurry". It also has a great video.
I told you that y'all were gonna fall in love with "Glycerin" when you reacted to that first Bush video. Thanks for this awesome video, Rob Squad!!
I saw them live in the mid 90s during their peak. This was the music I came up with in my teen years.
Heard this a hundred times without headphones, never really noticed how much that violin adds to it.
Ok your husband is a keeper. What a nice compliment. I had forgotten about this song. It's so good.
When the album Sixteen Stone came out I was 14yo. I found my first CD that I could play the whole thing on repeat. Really found my love for music with that CD.
Oh I forgot about this song. Blast from the past my God that song has stood the test of time.
You two give the best, thought out reviews of anyone.
Thanks for caring about the music.
You guys really need to hear Tori Amos if you haven't already. Live session Preacious things for sure.
Saw them in concert when they backed up Shinedown. Excellent live band!
I always loved Gavin and Bush, and this song in particular.
Love makin' music right here... there's nothin' better than Bush in their prime!! 🙌😍❤️
