JJ is so easy to listen too. He oozes soul. I have been watching him for a couple years. He can pretty much put strings on anything and make it sound awesome!!
Justin Johnson has came a long way. I saw him 7 years ago playing a tiny little coffee shop, Berkeley Bob's, in Cullman, Alabama....what a fantastic player to sit and listen to.
People always say, "man, [insert musician] could play a [random object] and make it sound good!" Well, JJ took it to heart and played a literal shovel.
The use of homemade/repurposed slide guitars is a homage to the the original bluesmen of 100+ yrs ago, who built their own instruments due to not having the money for anything else. As well as cigar boxes and oil cans, shovels were actually one of the most common things used.. usually with bailing wire for strings. The blues was literally born on those things..
@@bombercountyblues I know, it was a joke on my end. Im sorry it didn't come across that way. I actually saw JJ play a cigar box guitar live back before he found his fame, super humble guy.
Justin is unquestionably one of the World's greatest guitarists. He can do it all. Check out his acoustic Beatles covers like Don't Let me Down, While My Guitar etc. Amazing.
Two of my absolute favorite guitarist in one video! Honestly, Justin Johnson, and Michael Palmisano both just seem so genuine, and authentic; I smile every time I'm on this channel, and it's helped me over many a bump in my journey towards improving my chops. Thank you for always being so awesome!
He is realy good, reel blues player, simpel but good timing and lot of praxtis. Every time a see him i ook up mijn gitaar and go to play J.Jonsssen is super Thanks for tho loke tho him, bye bye from the Nederlands/Holland
This man single-handedly made reaction videos good. You actually walk away from his videos with knowledge and information relating to the original video that you most likely wouldn’t have known or figured out without prior knowledge of music theory or guitar techniques.
I've played acoustic rythm for 38 years! I discovered Justin 5 years ago and he totally changed my musical direction!! I am 59 and he blew me away!I He has around 400 videos posted!! You should check 'em out!!
Early in the pandemic Justin did some blues livestreams off of his back porch(deck) that sits along a river in Nashiville. At times he'd play almost 30 minutes without a break while sipping whiskey and then he'd play slide with the shot glass. You felt compelled to pour one for yourself while listening. Thanks Michael.
Justin Johnson has absolute mastery of all stringed instruments. Probably the GOAT. If you aren't subscribed you are truly missing out, he NEVER has a bad upload, literally every upload goes on a Justin Johnson favorite playlist which is realistically just a playlist of his entire channel.
What’s really sick about JJ’s playing is his pacing and groove. Lots of people can pull off those licks but few can put it together so that it adds up to a MOOD. He never forgets that the root of all this music is the call-and-response of African and African-American folksong. He plays a bass riff and answers it with trills on the treble strings. Its a conversation going back and forth, and his mastery is in allowing you to hear what each side is saying. You can’t just nail the licks, you have to find the FEELING and lock it down tight. Everything flows out of that. You don’t have the feel - or the mojo or the soul - and 10,000 rattlesnake tails won’t help you. In fact they’ll just make you look and sound ridiculous. And the first tip toward finding that groove is remembering that this is also dance music. If you can imagine people shaking, shimmying and rubbing up against each other while you play, you’re on to something. Of course, I’ve been trying to find that groove myself for the past 30 years...and it’s damned elusive.
I love Justin and watch every video I come across. This one is really cool. He has inspired me to attempt to learn slide. I can't wait for the opportunity to see him in a live venue!
Your characteristic noodling on the fretboard is reminding me strongly of my first guitar teacher; many moons hence. I was doing classical grade work with him. He taught (and performed) both jazz and classical guitar. He always had a guitar on his lap and he would punctuate his conversation by improvising in bebop style. He did this unconsciously, but excellently even while talking to someone on the phone (pre cellphone era - dating myself I know) and his playing would get more frenzied and complex depending on his mood, and the conversation. He had studied with Barney Kessel, and he was the one who introduced me to the joys of jazz in the first place. Great flashback memory. Watching you do this is a true blast from the past.
Yes that would be awesome with Justin’s Johnson. . I know all about trying to pick which of your eight children you love the best 😂. . I’ll check out your live chat. Love playing guitar it’s always a working progress. Thank you. Justin kicked ass in that video.
Dude, it’s great to see Justin Johnson get the respect and recognition he deserves. Guy is flat out one the best guitarists out there, but is also super kind and awesome person.
Justin Johnson is on a different level than everyone else on guitar it's because he makes guitar a very big part of his life. He's no doubt playing something right now while we're speaking.
Okay, I love Justin Johnson videos and music. I love Michaels breakdowns. The two together? Absolute awesome! This is going to get me to pull my dad’s guitar out and learn to play the damn thing.
Gotta love Justin Johnson and his very unique bluesy style of finger picking. Reminds me of a young Stevie Ray Vaughn, who plays more acoustic than electric. Not always a fan. But he has grown on me, lately. I'd like to hear him with a serious band. But he is a one man band. With or without. Such a great and unique talent.
That flat-5-lick on the 1st and 3rd fret is quite prominent in the beginning riff of Black Sabbaths In To The Void. I can't hear that lick without that coming into my mind. Hahaha.
Justin is definitely a TOP-Shelf player. He LOVES what he does and is soooo down to earth and has shared a wealth of work that that has been so enjoyable to listen to and learn from. I am honestly shocked that he is not as famous as those super famous players. In spite of that, the man seems so relaxed in his skin. Just kicking it laid back.

Somehow the word talented doesn't seem to encompasse how this man can take a seemingly bare shovel with three strings and make it sound like three different guitars. Thanks for the review and dropping knowledge.
Justin Johnson's slide work on other tunes is pretty on point too. Hell, his version of "Gimme Back My Bullets" on a three string guitar made out an ammo can is bad ass. He even made a guitar out of a shovel.

I absolutely am hooked on Justin Johnson. So glad you did one of his songs!!
I was lucky enough to sit down with Justin Johnson, up close and personal, while he played two instruments I built, five years ago. He IS the man 🎼🎸
Super video! I applauded for $5.00 👏👏
Now you should do Justin's Ace of Spades on the 3 string shovel
Legitimately came to say. Anything on the shovel or one of his other crazy homemade 3 stringers.

As Michaels said in past videos, fret hand = vocab/words vs picking hand = voice/ how you express. It's one thing to know the words you want to use...
Justin is amazing, been following for a while and... Just great honest blues. A virtuoso like no other
you got to revisit Justin again when he does a three string shovel Blues it'll blow you away.
