  • To catch a big halibut, you have to fish at specific spots in the sea where they feed during tide changes. We attempted to lure one while fishing with ‪@murphysportfishing‬ in Kyuquot Sound on Vancouver Island, BC Canada.

    Have to ask you Rod , what happened with kitty? Is there a video explaining? Her absence leaves a void in my every day. She has gift, something special. Your new co host is great too. Thanks for the videos.

      We only needed that one big one for the day actually (already had smaller ones on the previous day) so we just stopped afterward and went fishing for salmon instead. 😁

    I had never fished for halibut before so when I had the opportunity in Alaska, the boat captain rigged the rods and I just jigged it up and down off of the bottom. It was like reeling in a boulder! It got exciting when the halibut decided to go for a run! I landed three fairly large ones and my back was done.

    It was worth the wait from my point of view.
    Hi, Kitty and Rod. For some reason TH-cam keeps rejecting my post and I have no idea why. Let's give it another try.
    Kitty, I'm M.G. Hucul over on the other place.. You and I had a conversation there recently about those elk sheds you tracked down.
    Nice halibut. The best I ever did was many years ago at Shelter Pass, about 20 miles northeast of Port Hardy. I landed a 101 pounder, dropped the line back in and within 15 minutes I had landed a 77 pounder. Heck of a day fishing, not hurt at all by the Chinook, ling, yelloweye and Dungeness we also landed that same day. Best day fishing ever, and one I've never been able to repeat.
    Like always, love yours and Rod's videos, both together and separately. Look forward to seeing more. 👍

      @@FishingwithRod Very strange. Out of curiosity I will will repeat my post but leave FB fully intact.
      And I just remembered that there were also issues with the thumbs up emoji I left. When I tried to include it I got an error message sometimes.

    On my bucket list but I dispair it will ever happen. Love to do some ocean fishing in BC. I was born and raised on ocean fishing in the Atlantic and miss it so much!

      Victoria/Pedder Bay would be the closest best place if you want to try it. I know the halibut guide who people should go with in that area if that is the target species.

    Not sure if it's the same with gear fishermen, but for speafishing, a MolaMola sighting is considered good luck. Never seen one in BC waters.

    I used one of those bait bags last year but I had a huge halibut grab it and start peeling out line on my downrigger😵‍💫

  • @longway4442
    @longway4442 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yo Rod you think all flat fish prefer to hunt for food within the rocks if possible? If so has any guide explained how to approach the bite. Drift fishing or anchor?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So typically for smaller halibut, they tend to live and feed on sandy bottom. Bigger halibut tend to feed around rock piles etc where larger food items inhabit (rockfish, octopus, etc). It might have been hard to see, but we were anchored in this video (the buoy was in the background). We anchored on top of the rocky spot, had a chum bag down, three rods down with bait. We wanted to target around the tide change, and as time went on, small fish feeding on the bait trail drew in the bigger fish, eventually getting us that big specimen.

    Maybe take a page from tropical anglers and use a rod belt of some sort. Much more efficient using your whole body to fight the fish. Infinitely better than jamming the rod butt in your gut.
