    Nice job! I am not a brass player but I am a fan of a lot of lesser-known instruments and as a composer am a fan of having complete "families" of instruments present. I loved your sound and the smoothness of those runs. The more alto/tenor horn solos that are up on TH-cam, the better. :o)

    Back in the 60"s we had , what we called County and State contest where we would play a piece and be "judged" by teachers and "expert". The ratings were from the lowest all the way up to Superior... with a metal for the best..
    Well My Friend, I'm no "expert" but you just won the highest metal available. Tom that was ......a superior for sure!!!! What a talented player you are. Wish you lived in the States... we could sure use you in our humble concert band. Thanks for sharing this with us.

    Hi Alexander and thanks for listening.
    The instrument is known as both a tenor and an alto horn but it is the same instrument.
    In British style brass bands the instrument plays the tenor line ... the alto line is covered more by the back row cornets ...
    USA and most other countries it is called an alto horn and in the UK a tenor.
    Best wishes from Tom:-D!!

    I wonder why this instrument has not caught on in even concert bands. The euphonium isn't a standard part of the symphony orchestra, but it is certainly a standard part of the concert band. Alto/tenor horns have similar qualities, just in different ranges. I very much advocate for the promotion of euphoniums, but I never really thought about the alto horn. It could be just as good to add an alto horn to the orchestra as it would be to add euphonium.

    Hi Tangeles
    For me the difference in the size of the mouthpiece would limit me to one instrument or the other. There are players that are able to multi-task and I'm sure, if there is a will to, it can be done.
    These instruments also transpose to two different pitches. In other words, when you play a 'C' on the alto it sounds an Eb and the baritone sounds a Bb.
    I use and can recommend How Brass Players Do It (John Ridgeon) and J.B. Arban's Cornet Method.
    Hope this helps.
    Best wishes Tom.

    Hello Tom
    know that i really appreciate your kindness.
    Regarding the mouthpieces, I have not yet received the DW5 I cannot speak about it yet.
    I can still say that I find my Bach12 too deep, I know that this is what produces this very velvety sound particular to the horn. I would still like to try a shallower mouthpiece to maybe come back when my technique is more solid on this instrument.
    I do not want to abuse your kindness but can you tell me on which number or letter I should trust to determine the depth of the cup. And if there is as for the trumpet mouthpieces a website where I could see the cuts and make the comparisons on the alto / tenor mouthpieces.
    Thank you so much

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rémi ....
      I am happy to help, I'm not sure how the Bach system works but the Denis Wick and the Alliance use the same system ... size 1 being the largest and getting progressively smaller in cup diameter as the number increases. The letter 'A' in the system denotes a shallower cup ... so 2 and 2A have the same cup diameter but the 2 will be deeper and so forth throughout the range ... I have yet to see a chart that compares brands but there is not a great deal of difference between the DW and the Alliance ... the exception being the DW5, not quite sure why they came up with this one but of course it maybe a good stepping stone for you moving from cornet ... although I moved straight from a DW4B on the cornet to a DW2 on the horn!!
      You mentioned before that you had tried many books and ideas ... I would suggest that you do try the 'mystery to mastery' technique, especially the blowing through the mouthpiece video - without producing any sound - and then inserting into the instrument without changing your embouchure ... you may find that the sound just opens up regardless of what mouthpiece you use ... this technique works just as well on tenor horn and helped me visualise the mechanics of producing a sound and I was surprised when it worked for me ... I only wish that I had the information forty years ago when I was starting out, it would have saved a lot of frustration!!
      For information these are links with mouthpiece specifications:
      www.deniswick.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Denis-Wick-Products-Mouthpiece-Mute-Comparison-Chart.pdf

    A-Well executed..performance.Tempo and dynamics well done .
    In regards to tone on any brass instrument
    if you are very fortunate you could have a unique
    tone (Shoena White ) Owen Farr etc.
    Otherwise you just have to do the best with what you have
    This is one of the. Facts of life.
    And you could still be technically brilliant.
    Long time euph player and long long past it.
    Warmest Regards .Joe

    You did amazing job, I am studying this on a Bb trumpet. One of my favorite pieces, the only problem I am having is Var. V

      @TomsTenorHorn  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jenny, thanks for listening and I appreciate the compliments, this piece sounds great on a trumpet!
      Var. V probably looks trickier than it is ... I always practice anything like this with a metronome set at 60 beats per minute until I don't have to think about the notes ... then leave it until the next day and gradually up the tempo over a few days until target is reached.
      Best of luck with the music and best wishes from Tom:-D!!

      Mags496 Sorry, to reply so late. I been busy. I am also writing a paper on this for my Music Literature class. You are very welcome, I am going to practice like you have stated. Is there any tips on how to work on this piece?

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jenny,
      If you have an Arban Tutor practice the G Major scales exercises near the front of the book using a metronome, slowly to begin with until the runs are nice and clean and you aren't thinking too much about what valves to push down. These exercises will also help with the octave interval leaps.
      Dynamics are important, (although they aren't great in this video) ... practice playing pp as well as ff.
      Stick at it and you will succeed!
      Best wishes from Tom :-D!!

    Hey mr. What brand is your horn? I play by myself, and have done that for a couple of months. I am thinking of getting my own horn (I am borrowing one right now), so what brands can you recommend?

      Hi Nick, mine is a 1987 Besson Sovereign and it is the only brand I have any real experience playing.
      The Yamaha Neo is a good solid instrument as is the York and Sterling.
      They are all very expensive brand new so might be worth a look on eBay ...
      hope this helps and best of luck with the playing.

    Hey mags so. I llay euohonium and i was going to get this but instead decided on buying the german tenor horn in b flat. Wich is almost the same as euohonium but a little more unique. I just wanted to ask. Does that instrumwnt play in the band alot. So do the conposers make music for it. And if tgey dont. Do you llay in the band? And like read french horn music i just figured if i bought the tenor horn. Then i wouldnt get to play it in band \ orchestra. Which is a huge no. And i know how to read bass clef not treble and i woyldnt be good.. But if i got the german tenor horn then i could read euohonium music probably and already be good at it

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anderson, the tenor horn in this video is pitched in E flat and is generally known as an Alto Horn in Europe and USA ... there are three in a British style Brass Band, Solo Horn, 1st Horn and 2nd Horn with individual parts written for the instrument in treble clef. There is quite a bit of music written for the instrument and there are many virtuoso players around the globe.

    • @andersonphilips7093
      @andersonphilips7093 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. So. Question. Do you know what the german tenir horn is? Its curved. Its also known as the European baritone. In b flat. So that would mean i coyld read euohonium music right. Because i havent seen music written just foe the german twnir horn in a band or something. I want to play an exotic instrument and its in b flat. So like a euphonium. Do you knkw anything about it?

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is a curved version of what we call a B flat Baritone in the UK and you will be able to play music written for any B flat instrument including Euphonium without having to transpose, they aren't used in a traditional brass band setting but there are quite a few uploads on TH-cam of the German Tenor Horn.

      Hi Andres,
      Not sure if your question is being lost in translation, so apologies in advance!
      This is a tenor horn (or alto, depending on where you live!) and is pitched in the key of E flat (Eb) ... seven semitones below your trumpet.
      Hope this helps and best wishes from Tom:-D!!

      Andrés HorrachAndres, it should not matter if you are Bb flat trumpet and he is a Tenor Horn which is in the Key of E. Just listen to how is sounds and play's. Are music is going to be in G Major for a "Bb Flat Trumpet," for Piano it would be in the key of F Major. I hope his well help you plus if you listen more to them playing it then you well do fine. I have look all over youtube and he is the only person that is playing right on it, like 100% right.

      @TomsTenorHorn  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Philip,
      Always good to hear from a fellow horn player ... I use a Denis Wick 3 in silver plate.
      I haven't tried an Alliance mouthpiece yet, does it feel any different than a Wick?
      How do you like the new Prestige, is it the model with the repositioned trigger?

    • @Pendragon1960
      @Pendragon1960 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mags496 Hi, Prestige is a great instrument I had the new one with the revised trigger works and plays well, very easy blowing and no tuning issues. It came with an Alliance No2 which is a DW1, was until then using a DW Heritige2. Alliance has a bigger rim which is more comfortable than the DWH. Have a issue now as have lost 174.2 kilo since Feb 2012 and means my embouchure so much so just ordered Alliance Prestige 4 which is DW3. gets so confusing with mouthpiece's will let you know how good it is when it arrives.

      Phillip Regula
      Hi again Phillip ... thanks for the info and I would appreciate your evaluation of the Alliance 4 ... did you have problems with the Alliance 2?
      It is a difficult choice deciding on a new mouthpiece and not one I have done too often, for me it's like having a new conductor standing in front of the band ... great for a while then you wonder what was so wrong with the old one:-D!
      Congratulations also on the weight loss ... that is a terrific achievement!
      Best wishes from Tom.

    • @Pendragon1960
      @Pendragon1960 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom, It was the weight loss that has given me problems with the Alliance 2 was ok but always had an issue with the higher register, after the loss it got worse, in trying to find a way round it, tried the heritage which is what Besson used to give with the new instruments then they changed. I was at the Brass Winter School weekend last week with Major David Bringer and Alan Fannie, long discussions over lunches also emailed Owen and conclusion was weight loss has made a major difference in register, but can be gotten back with lots of effort, I know that the Alliance is much kinder to the lips, but took quite a few calls to places to decide which way to go, so went for the A4 as its the equivalent to the DW3, Alliance gave a much richer tone I found in high and low range. But of course will find out if gone right way when it comes from Alliance. Love the videos by the way given our of chill time on my iPod. Regards Phil

      Phillip Regula
      Hi Phillip and thanks for listening!
      I had thought of giving the DW2A a go, mainly to try and get a warmer sound and I will look forward to your opinions on the A4 when you try it.
      It always seems tricky for me to get an opportunity to change as we always have a contest just round the corner.
      I'm pretty sure I would be preaching to the converted in your case but I had descent results increasing my range using the exercises in 'How Brass Players Do It' by John Ridgeon.
      Good luck with the playing and I look forward to hearing from you again.
      Best wishes ... Tom

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Danny and thanks for listening, this is an 'inverted mordent' ... you play the written note 'A Natural' followed by the note above, in this case 'B Natural' both within the time of the semi-quaver that it is written above ... hope this helps and good luck with the piece ... best wishes from Tom☺☺☺

    I want to play this for solo and ensemble and I found the sheet music for my instrument and it looks the same as that but its for the bassoon. So is Tenor horn music and bassoon music the same?

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there Ange ... the musical notation is the same but the difference will be that your instrument plays in 'concert pitch' ... where the note that is written is also the one you hear and mine is a 'transposing instrument' pitched in Eb ... where the note that is written has a pitch four semitones lower than 'concert pitch'. I hope that helps :-D!!

    • @angebiennej.4254
      @angebiennej.4254 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mags496 Thank you, I have one more question what's that scribble above some of the notes it sounded like a trill but I know the correct term is Mordent

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ange, yes it is a mordent ... the note is played with a single rapid alternation with the note above or below ... they can be chromatically modified by a small flat, sharp or natural accidental. Technically, in this case, you play the note it is written on followed by the note above all within the length of the note.

    • @angebiennej.4254
      @angebiennej.4254 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mags496 I think I understand but correct me if I'm wrong, Do You play the note with the mordent above it and the next note that would be chromatically after it in one beat or do you play the note with the mordent above it and the note after it in the music in one beat

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ange ... if you take the first mordent written over the B natural quaver as an example ... play a B natural followed by a C natural within the time of a semi quaver (each being a demi semi quaver in length) followed by another B natural (a semi quaver in length) ... This will mean that you are playing the three notes of the mordent adding up to the value of the quaver that it is written over ... The pitch of the mordent's grace note is determined by a # or b symbol written above or below, also indicating to play above or below the written note ... no indication of pitch will mean you play the grace note within the key signature ... I hope this helps :-D!!
