paul was hellbent.. they wouldn't quit. which means a best case scenario they reach the 4th or 5th stratum and get wiped either way. they all die if rudy doesn't go there.

Your point is getting far ahead, No Hate 😂 In the light novel the the Hydra was going on a rampage after only one head was alive meaning it was moving so quickly and you remember Rudy having the Demon Eye which make him see multiple scenario in the future. But because of how fast the Hydra was moving Rudy wasn't properly seeing things similar to when they spar with Ruijerd because of how fast he is it was confusing for him to find out his next move and that was the reason he got distracted though sadly in the anime they show that he was being overconfident. We could even say that it was all Hitogami's fault because he was the one who advised Rudy to get a Demon Eye in the first place

Rudeus is a mage, he doesnt possess godlike instincts and reflexes and his eye skills only work when he is looking at the moving parts. He also stopped actively fighting monsters and honing his battle skills during his time in the magic academy. Many people disregard that and point fingers and expecting Rudeus to be an MC of a typical power fantasy

@@YGOHermit It's honestly mainly due to the animes presentation of rudy, and non explanation of battle aura. Also, they didn't highlight how the hydra's scale, and that in close quarters rudy couldn't see the whole thing(it was just too big at that range) making his eye WAY less useful. Rudy was literally playing on the hardest fucking difficulty in this fight, and it was against a mythical fairty tail horror monster, to add some perspective.

Hitogami wants Rudy not to go but for his own self-preservation and not necessarily min-maxing about Rudy's best possible outcome.
So in a way, Hitogami was lying that not going is the best option.
Wouldn’t the party be wiped out before getting to the hydra if Rudy wasn’t there? Rudy was the reason they found the hidden staircase to the teleportation circle. They would’ve gone through the fake circles in that final room and probably died
In the first place, they probably never would have made it to the lower floors without the book Rudy brought with him. Paul was already basically depressed because they were unable to make good progress and that they just lost Roxy. More than likely the party would have slowly continued trying to make progress after hiring a replacement mage until Elinalise finally showed up 9 months later. Even with her addition, it's doubtful any big progress would have been made. Party members would start to give up one after another begging Paul to ask Rudy for help as months/years go by, if they've all survived that is, until Rudy gets the message that Roxy has been killed and they require his assistance. Who knows if he'd have the state of mind to successfully clear the dungeon with Roxy dead, not to mention the regret he'd have felt the whole time making the choice not to go. Most likely Sylphie's pregnancy would have been stressful due to Rudy's stress/regret from his decision on top of Rudy cheating on her with the beast girls. Lots of regrets this way, but who can say if they are the same as losing both your parents.

Paul would have to get another mage and it might take years before they reach the Hydra in which they would promptly all die

@@mawandembatha6622 that is a wrong way of thinking. Rudy is a newbie to the dungeon. It is his first one. Which is the worst thing to do. Paul and the rest are actually the best dungeon team alive. Only missing Ghislaine. Zenith was a newbie to the group and was the reason the group disbanded because of Paul. The group wouldn't have rushed the Dungeon like that which is why Paul was sad he was going so slow. Because a group of alive people are more important than someone that maybe gone already. It would have taken years but eventually they would get to the end. And Paul would rush in like he did but be dragged out by the group. He wouldn't be able to yell at them with the excuse of that is their mother.
He would immediately realize the group is doing too much for one person. Especially when theynare hated him for disbanding. He would possibly consider abandoning the raid at least until they can get someone like Ghislaine to help with the fighting.

4. Paul and the party will be stuck there for several years trying to solve the labyrinth, because Rudy has the book and they dont have a mage anymore.
5. Elinalise and Norn could be dead as well since only 2 of them went there without Rudy.
So the downside of Rudy not going will be higher.
I would say not entirely because the intensity and speed of the fight was so high and fast anything could have happened in a matter of seconds. We can blame him all we want but anything could have happened in quick seconds.He did save them all from the fire attack.

@@Opraissuuno. Its not clear in the anime but he couldnt keep up with the Hydra. Roxy was protected by Talhand and Elinalise was not there to protect him. (Which she also blames herself for)
The man god flat out told him if he went then he would have regretted it. If he stayed he would have had regrets but not as much.

He's basically in an active war zone, it's reasonable for him to mess up a little. Especially when they've been dungeon delving for a few days. What they should have done was come back with more stuff and people. Paul went out like a G though.

I'm pretty sure in the LN it's explained that the reason he tensed up was due to his foresight eye responding to the hydra targeting him in the worst way possible. He was seeing so many different outcomes at once that he essentially got stun-locked by sensory overload.

That said, even with that mini stun, Paul saving him the FIRST time should have had him on his feet and moving while assessing, not once again staying put to decide that he needs to watch out for said Necks, all while not watching out for the necks.

Yeah, if they took another frontline to defend the mages and more resources. Probably would have been fine.
The most annoing thing is that people expect Rudy to be perfect at everything but will bitch in other Isekai about the perfect goody two shoe that can do everything. If anyone is at fault it would be Paul for not pulling out. Rudy did his best fighting a mystical being believed to be extinct which is a direct counter to his forte. Losing only one Party member against that would normally be considered a good deal.
People need to know something and cut Rudy some slack. Rudy couldn't keep up, not mentally, but physically. He doesn't have Battle Aura. The ability to manipulate mana throughout the body. (this hasn't been explained in the anime) Its invisible to the eye, but enhances your strength and reflexes. Fighting without it is like playing a game with input lag. His demon eye closes that gap slightly, but he isn't physically capable of dodging the Hydra's attacks. In return though he has an abundant pool of mana. This was by no means Rudy's fault. Even if you can see an attack coming, it doesn't matter if you can't dodge it. The hydra went off script at around 10% HP. It's headless limbs began attacking everyone including Rudy. Which left Elise preoccupied, and Talhand left to defend Roxy. They had to block it because the scales were as sharp as blades. This left the main last head free to attack Rudy. (Remember, he needed to be point blank to hit it with magic.)
If you are incapable of doing something, is that your fault? If you, a normal human were in that scenario, (keep in mind rudy only has the muscles he's built and normal reflexes) would you be able to get out of the way?
People now are mistakenly referring to Rudy as a glass cannon. This is not true. By definition, a glass cannon is all firepower with little to no defense. Rudy has impeccable defensive earth magic and control magic with quagmire (giggidy).
Rudy would most likely win in a 1v1 in a lot of battles. This was different. He was placed in a situation where he was forced to be defenseless and rely on allies to cover him. The hydra was just too fast. Everyone was caught off guard by its intelligence. Did you expect it to rip off its own neck to regrow heads, or to use its dead limbs as sharp blunt weapons? Probably not, but still the situation was simply unlucky. Rudy was in his worst element. Close range.
A knife is still more effective against an undrawn firearm within 5 feet.

@@zxyen1629 actually, I wouldn't say he made a mistake at all. He didn't have any other choice. Even going there in the first place. (If he didn't roxy, paul, talhand, geese and Zenith would all have died.) In the LN he never got distracted and he didn't here. Rudy was fully focused. His attention wasn't pulled out of the fight, it was pulled to the headless hydras. Personally, paul and rudy were mvps. Especially blocking the fire breath.

The man god did say he would regret for going or not going. Blame Rudeus all you want for the death of Paul but a little birdie has stated that in the light novel, due to the hydra’s head being used as limbs to attack, Rudeu’s eye of foresight was seeing a bunch of chaos and made it hard for him to react. That’s why he froze in place. You also gotta remember that Rudeus is not built like his father so there was no way he can react as fast as he can, at least not currently.
The first stunlock was acceptable. The 2nd one was due to him inner monologuing about how he needs to watch out for the headless limbs instead of moving while thinking this, and isn't acceptable (in regards to he truly should have been doing that).

Rudy isn't fast enough to dodge the Hydra and it's stubs even with the Demon eye giving him future sight.
You also have to consider that the Hydra isn't just a static creature but an intelligent being. The longer the battle went the more it knew who to prioritize. Also consider that it went berserk when it knew that it was on the verge of death thus making any pattern that they could anticipate to be null.
In the anime it looks like Rudy was monologuing in his head wasting time but in reality everything is happening so quick.
No matter what happens Paul is destined to die. What happened to them was the best outcome.

I'm aware it happened fast. I'm also aware if Rudy repositioned and was moving that Paul, as well as Rudy, have a significantly better chance at living, and that's someone that should have been Auto-Pilot for Rudy.
Of course he's destined to die. The Author wanted him to die in this fight. That doesn't mean Rudy didn't make a significant mistake to make it happen.

The huge differences from WN to LN in English translation is because of the editors deciding to randomly cut/change how something is after a translator turns in their work.
So funnily enough, the WN English Translation is closer to the JP LN than the English LN is.
It was Rudeus who brought the book on Labyrinth, without him the team was unlikely to reach the end of 5th stratum in the first place.
It was Rudeus who located the teleportation circle to the 6th stratum, without him the team would have to try the circles above and lose some members to traps.
It was Rudeus who suggested burning the neck stumps - it's possible others would've had the same idea eventually, but after how many corpses?
It was Roxy who knew about manatite hydras and their properties - the team could eventually learn all that on their own, but after how many corpses?
Paul's instincts were top-notch, when the hydra tried to use breath attack Paul detected the threat immediately. So even if he didn't know exactly what was incoming, he would most likely react and survive, but what about others?
Basically, without Rudeus there the team is fucked.
Fucked in so many ways. Would take them years to maybe find it, if they don't get wiped out first. Then get wiped out anyway.
Roxy would be also dead, and they'd be down one of the best mages in the world that isn't exactly replace-able.
(and Rudeus is obviously much stronger than her too, wordless casting and future sight allowing him to stay so close and quickly blast the necks. As well as being very physically fit from determined training over many years. Despite all of that, he isn't almighty. It's messed up people expect that. No matter how much he does, it's never good enough.)

So, I think the one who is out of position at the end is Elinaliz. She needs to stay next to Rudeus.
Geese also did nothing in the second fight, his duty was to watch and flee if the party was wiped out. If he had helped. Paul might've lived but geese might've died
Geez’s job is to run if they all got wiped and tell everyone what happened.
When the hydra is one head remaining, it went rampage and attack with all limbs even the ones that the heads are cut off. So Elinalise is busy defending herself and Talhand is busy defending Roxy. Only Rudeus is left undefended and Rudy just could not keep up

but you miss the part where rudy was the one who inform the whole party that to kill the hydra you need to burn the wound after you cut a head.. So the whole team would be dead.
They wouldn't even reached the Hydra withou Rudy.
Without Roxy they couldn't beat the Caterpillars on floor 3. Paul and Elinalise couldn't kill them and Talhand couldn't do anything to them aswell.
Shierra and Vierra are not strong enough and couldn't help either. So, without Rudy they couldn't even rescue Roxy. They would very likely all have died if they tried any further.

The real answer to saving Paul was bringing in a better equipped party to fight the hydra. We needed more skilled swordsmen with swords strong against armour
All they could maybe have hopeful was shields styles - but I agree. They had the time to go back and get extra help even if they were lost in the fight - it would've been possible for them to not have run into the situation. As for the sword, it was rare - and he was the only one with it.
Good luck with that. S rank fighters are scarce to begin with. They are either out doing their own business and would not care less about somebody's wife. They will surely cost high to hire. In which they do not have endless amount of funds and resources to begin with.
@@jonglopez5400 Well money was never really an issue as they had access to mana crystals - something already rare and worth money. Let alone they could've solid them later from the raid. The problem was simply the issue of man power for sure, but I dont think they had to get S rank, but for sure, that was all they could hope for in this case was just cannon folder. Granted, base off what we saw - it might have been more than enough to get through it.

Ngl, I think Paul would have died immediately because of how he immediately ran in when he saw Zenith had Roxy, Rudy, and Elaneilise not been there. He'd have kept angrily swinging, cutting off heads until he got caught in his blind rage.
I don't think he would die immediately, but in a war of attrition he would have lost against the regenerative ability of the hydra.
sooner or later he would have gotten tired and slipped and get hit hard by the hydra.

Elinalise jumped in because she had to save him there. So it didn't take that long. Which made it so then Roxy had to save them after that, or they would have gotten wrecked.
Roxy would not be there if not for Rudeus, and Paul was lucky she is one of the most skilled and experienced mages in the world.
The heads regen really fast too.
He selfishly risked the lives of everyone. Which is sadly a typical Paul move. Among others.

His presence in Begarrit allowed them to save Roxy and later Zenith albeit she is in a vegetative state(at least they think she is, but she's actually not. We find out much later). With the book he borrowed from the magic university that maps the entire labyrinth they were able breeze through all the floors. With his knowledge of the tale of Hercules and the hydra, they were able to come up with a way to defeat the hydra and with his own power, most of them survived the fight, except for Paul.
If he didn't go to Begarrit, Roxy would've died(that was obvious enough given her predicament. Rudeus literally saved her just in the nick of time.) They were short on firepower without Roxy and struggled to fight through the 2nd and 3rd floors. They would've needed a year or two more before they reached the 6th floor, in which there are 3 decoy teleportation circles that teleports them randomly. They would've never found out that the real teleportation circle is under a secret staircase. But lets say they managed to find out anyway, there's the hydra. Paul could cut the heads, but no one knew about its weakness but Rudeus. They likely would never be able to defeat it or worse, all of them would fall in battle and Zenith would remain crystallized for a long long time.

Kind of sure things would be worse without Rudeus but he probably should have called in more reinforcements.
The Hydra, like a dragon, is intelligent and also changed its pattern to make it difficult for its opponents and when it saw Rudeus helpless, it didn't think twice and went to kill him.

they wouldn’t have had the book
they wouldn’t know that fire stops the regeneration
they wouldn’t have strong enough mage to defend from the breath even if roxy was alive
and they might not even been able to kill the hydra. we know that the last head was bigger and i’ve heard that in the novel it was considered “immortal”. we don’t know if anyone was even able to cut it down and even if paul noticed that eyes are more fragile, could he do enough damage with a sword?
Roxy would be dead, they wouldn't reach the hydra until probably years later. Unless they die before that, which would have likely happened. And the hydra... yeah. There was so much happening in that fight, you can add a lot of things to that list.
Paul's sword is special though, OP vs high defense targets. They should have mentioned that. It's sort of, the stronger the defense, the stronger the sword is. So it's garbage vs easy to cut things. Which is why he got it for cheap, due to seller ignorance. (I don't remember that part of novel but pretty sure how it was more or less)
Roxy would have died without Rudy, the party wouldnt have found the right teleporter and would eventually have to give up. Paul would have emotionally shattered and go to Rudy and his sisters. That way they still have to look after a mentally shattered parent. Rudy would be guilt ridden by Roxy's death and the what if about his mom. No spoilers, but light novel readers I think we can imagine what the death of someone like Roxy would do to Rudeus

But I think ultimately it would have been best for him to go, since there is a stark difference in "losing one parent by doing nothing" and "losing one in the process of saving the other"

It is making me so upset that people on the internet just sh*t on Rudy so much for not being more experienced and all that stuff. This is why I don’t want to ever take those kind of isekai fan seriously. It like they just hating on him because they can’t insert themselves onto him and ignore how much he contributed to the whole operation for the last few episodes.
Those are people who couldn't care less about good writing and characters. Why you have certain animes topping the charts based on no merit.
Irrespective of the outcome, judgement of whether something is a good decision or a bad one should be done perspectively and not retrospectively.
Additionally, Roxy living and Paul dying seems to be like a good trade rather than the inverse.
The author should do a small what-ifs with some of the decisions rudy made with the man-god’s advice
He does, when rudeus gets trapped within an illusion by a demon slime, it shows an alternate timeline of if he listened to man gods advice.

Paul and the party would have either died trying to reach the bottom of the dungeon without the books help or they would be able to get there but would not figure out the last teleport and do a coin toss that had no way of paying out and they would never find Zenith.
That Dragon Breath attack in the boss room was a Party Wipe for sure. Otaku Spirit said (his video of cut content from the novel) that not even 10 magicians would have been able to defend against it. Rudy saved them time and wrong choices (the book on the Teleportation Labyrinth, and the 3 Teleporters in the last room before the boss), I can't imagine how they could have survived mentally and physically. You could see that Paul was struggling to keep it together when Rudy and Elinalise arrived in Rupan.
you should have looked at it differently, if rudy didnt come then paul very likely would have never even made it to the hydra. They were stuck on the 3rd layer without rudys book, and lets say even if they somehow made it to the 5th lsyer, they for sure would have never found the secret circle which leads to the hydra without rudy.

Rudeus will blame himself for everything, even if he wasn't actually at fault. He's an unreliable narrator, and most of what he monologues about is limited to his own experiences. Blaming him is unfair due to his role in the team and his limited physical capabilities in comparison to people with battle armor. Blaming him also takes away from Paul's individuality since he would have charged in there on his own even if the others had retreated.

But Rudy also realizes (in the novels) that the mangod knows how to manipulate his decisions. The mangod knew Rudy wouldn't betray sylphie for one of the beast girls. So he wasn't going to take half of his advice anyways. Rudy in the novel seems to think that this is actually what the mangod wanted him to do.
Rudy is also extremely inexperienced in labyrinth adventure, but even if he was experienced Paul's death was inevitable which is sad af man

It's not though. Rudy was stunlocked, got saved, and rather than go immediately move to make himself capable of dodging, stayed stunlocked again INTENTIONALLY to "assess" what he needs to do. that assessment needed to happen while he was on his feet and moving. It was a huge ass blunder on his part and to say it isn't is simply incorrect.
Yes there were other mistakes that ultimately contributed to this, and yes mistakes will happen in a large fight like this. It doesn't change the fact that his 2nd "stunlock" for no reason is what lead to Paul dying.
The only way to ever "get better" is to reflect on what you did wrong, and in the case of Rudy, that was the major wrong he did in the fight.
You're correct that Rudy was stunlocked, however You're wrong for blaming Rudy. Magic eyes are difficult things to actually handle. Even Gislaine had to wear an eyepatch to avoid overloading her mind.

Is there anyone here who played Darksoul or Eldenring? Then you should understand why Rudy can't react, because of shitty camera angle.
You know what this reminds me of? Those really intense, top level fights or matches in sports. It's the highest level of that sport possible, and still, some of the best players make mistakes, some mistakes end up being critical. People start getting angry at the guy who did the critical mistakes forgetting that human error is inevitable, hence match outcomes are a probability. This one mistake might have been critical, but of course, people have to over analyze it while being armchair fighters.
He had to go but if they had went and grabbed Ghislaisne before entering I'm 100% convinced no one gets hurt.
Also if Rudy hadn't gone to help, not only Roxy would have died, but Paul and Talhand would have succumbed too.
if he doesnt leave, Roxy dies, Dad hates him for not going mother is "dead", sister hates him also. IF he leaves Roxy is alive, mom is "saved", dad is gone, sister loves him.
Other key points...
-They wouldn't have got to the mom so quick without Rudy book about summons.
-They wouldnt have known if fire would work at such close range
-They wouldn't have known about that lower level teleportation circle
So not only did Rudy save them time and resources. He also probably saved other members of the crew from dying.

I think one thing that you forgot was that Rudy was the person who came up with the idea to burn the heads, which came from his past life. I do not think Zenith would have been saved if Rudy was not there.

What if Rudi did not go?...well, first of all, Norn would have gone instead of him. She would probably have parished on her way to her father. if Elanalise would have acompanied Norn, she might get there, but like you mentioned they would be verry late. Secondly, Roxy would be dead for shure. No questions asked there.
3rd, The party around Paul would NEVER have found the way to Zenith. They did not have the book that Rudy braught with him, and neigther did they have Rudi to figure out how to accass the hidden teleporter.
4th, IF they somehow managed to find the teleporter, they would all be dead. The reason they evan could defeat the Hydra is because of Rudi. He came up with the idea to cauterise the wounds to prevent the regeneration. this was streight isekai knollage there. Nobody would have come up with that. Since Roxy would be dead, they had no mage to protect them from the fire breath attack....yes, maybe, paul could have dodged that attack, but i highly doubt that anybody else in that party could. Paul on his own would be killed by the Hydra eventualy on his own.
The most likely cenario would be that paul and his party would search for years on end in that dungeon. Norn if she survived at this point would have been grown up enough to acompany her father into the dungeon. The party would be eigther A disband after years of searching, B some party members parish inside the dungeon, C the party disbands after years of searching without success and probably several deaths. D Norn would probably be killed somehow, and Paul would go insane, take his own life after her death blaming himself, or die protecting her just like he did with Rudi.
Should've, could've, would've makes no sense in this case though. Roxy would 100% be dead and their party would take a really long time to even get to the hydra. Paul or someone else from the party would've probably died as well. You're not taking in consideration the fact that Paul lost it when he saw Zenith and just charged in. Situation could've been worst or exactly the same. Blaming stuff on Rudeus makes no sense cause the fact is it could've easily went the same route or worst if he wasn't there. The risk was still the same no matter what. That’s why Geese sent the letter and why they were struggling, it was no easy task and everyone knew the risks.

With hindsight in mind:
1) Rudy had 2 choices. Stay at the academy, marry a beast girl and lose his Paul, Roxy, and their entire party including Elinalise. Paul probably gets to live years longer because it’ll take Elinalise longer to get there and it’ll take the partly significantly longer to figure out the dungeon. Rudy never knows what happens to his mother and Paul would hate him from the grave for eternity. Also Norn will never forgive him. It’s worth noting Rudy wouldn’t be too invested in finding Zenith. Lilia may not make survive the journey to live with Rudy and Lilia safely after Paul inevitably dies.
2) Rudy goes and the events play out as shown. The consequences are that he doesn’t marry a beast girl, Rudy loses a hand, and he now has to take care of his vegetable mother while raising a child. This shouldn’t be too bad, because I’m assuming Lilia will help Rudy with Zenith. This is also the best chance for a positive relationship with Norn.
The biggest losses from choosing option 2 are not getting a 2nd wife, maybe misses his first child’s birth, and losing a hand. The benefits from choosing option 2 are he definitely gains Lilia as a maid, many family friends are alive, Roxy his goddess is alive, and he has a better chance to have a good relationship with Norn.
I don’t think option 1 is really an option. Rudy does have significant losses by going, but the losses from not going are way worse for Rudy IMO.

Chibi, I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t agree. You’re being way too optimistic about a lot of stuff.
TL;DR: I think Rudy going generates a net positive, but he does regret being the cause of Paul’s death and discovering Zenith’s dementia, which wouldn’t happen had he not gone
To start, major points Rudy contributed to the search party
1) The book about the Teleportation Labyrinth, which allowed Geese to get them further than ever in a 7 month standstill
2) Saving Roxy, which as you yourself said, only Rudy could do
3) The hidden staircase, which he was only able to find thanks to the Dragon God’s teleportation shrines
4) The hydra’s weakness to fire, which he thought about due to the Greek myth of Hercules, inaccessible to anyone who is not from our world
Without Rudy, Elinalise would get there 8 months after Roxy died to find Paul desperate and miserable, throwing himself and his party against the Labyrinth to no avail until everyone gave up or died, and she wouldn’t be able to contribute in any way as significant as Rudy. They would not get to the hydra, and even if they did, they wouldn’t know how to kill it.
So the point is, I believe Paul was dying in that Labyrinth no matter what. Maybe Talhand and the others eventually gave up, but Paul wouldn’t stop until he saved Zenith, which would be never. By Rudy not going, what would have happened differently would be
1) Cliff would not propose to Elinalise, who would leave him for good
2) Roxy would die
3) Paul would fall out with all his close allies, who would either die in the Labyrinth (like Roxy) or leave his side
4) Paul would die in the Labyrinth, without reaching the hydra’s floor
5) Zenith wouldn’t be saved
And while it would pain Rudy greatly to know all that, it wouldn’t have been his fault. So, by him going, all of that is changed, as in, Zenith and Roxy are saved, and Paul’s friends are alive. Paul dies in a noble sacrifice for his son, and it might be Rudy’s fault for going with them, but I think overall they came out better.
And then there’s Zenith’s dementia, which is another problem to solve, but that wouldn’t even be known were it not for Rudy, so maybe he regrets finding out.
Roxy would die if Rudeus didn't go there and Hitogami is suspicious.
Imho children of Rudeus and Roxy are threat to Hitogami, so he tries for them to never mate. He succeed in the demon continent (maybe if they met there, Roxy would be Rudeous first wife) but failed in the labirinth and now they both has feelings for each other.

Without Rudy there they never would’ve even found the Hydra. It’s only because he came by teleportation that he recognised the location and realised there was a hidden staircase. No one else in the history of that labyrinth had ever got some further.

Rudy saving Roxy leading to Paul dying is a huge leap of logic... As much as Paul dying was because he had to save Rudeus, if Rudy wasn't there Roxy would be 100% dead and there's a high probability for the whole party dying if they actually manage to reach the guardian, I doubt Paul would give up before reaching Zenith and they wouldn't be able to kill the hydra without Rudy and Roxy, even if Paul was "solo-ing" the hydra he wouldn't be able to KILL it. As a whole, I disagree with the premise of this entire video.

They never would have discovered the Hydra or even get to the boss chamber without Rudy getting the knowledge of the teleportation ruins hidden room, and the book to guide the party through the deeper levels of the dungeon. Maybe Eloise would have been able to bring the book to the party but that would have required him to have the foresight that it was the same dungeon as the one in the books when the intention of bringing the book was strictly for the teleportation ruins.
Without Rudy, probably many of the other party members would have died including Paul, if they where dead set on pushing through the labyrinth to find Zenith, unless they ended up giving up entirely, if no other external factor altered the course of how the labyrinth exploration would unfold for Paul's party.
Things to consider, as stated in the video Roxy would have perished, which would severly hampered the party's progress inside the labyrinth, but also without Rudy's book about a former adventurer mapping the teleportation labyrinth, navigating the labyrinth would be extremely difficult if not impossible. But the most important factor was the strategy to defeat the hydra, it was provided by Rudy by applying knowledge outside Mushoku Tensei's world to defeat a monster people in Mushoku Tensei's world have little knowledge about, the hydra itself. Without that massive insight in how to counter the hydra's regeneration ability, the battle of Paul's party against the hydra would have turned into dreadful battle of attrition where the hydra would have ended wiping the entire the party out, unless the party members manage to flee, since they wouldn't have the firepower provided by Roxy and Rudy, but specially because the party lacked a genious strategist or monster specialist that could come up with a viable strategy to defeat the hydra.
Imo it is the sudden confidence (not the first time it is used) he had when the fight was still on and the rest of the party were still fighting with their life in the line, that sealed his father fate.
At that point he could still see the attack(prediction skill) if he didn't lose focus.
But I wonder if he will lost even more....
Rudy had the book which helped them move so fast, and he was the one who found the alternative teleporter, and he's the one who remembered the weakness from the tale of Heracles.

Another thing to consider is would Paul's party have even been able to make it to the Hydra in the first place if Rudy wasn't there. He had the book that showed them the way. He's the one that found the hidden passage. They might have never faced the danger of the Hydra in the first place.
You're talking about fighting the hydra without Rudy but they wouldn't have found the teleporter to the boss room. In fact they couldn't even navigate the portals without the book Rudy brought

Rudy was the one to find the boss teleporter, without the book maybe the party would never or it would take a lot more years to reach the last room, also Rudy was the one that gave the party the knowledge of burning the hydra heads to stop the regen, in the end he traded a beast girl as wife for a Roxy and a wrecked Father(because Paul would be a mess with a few more years of no success) for a debilitated mother
Rudeus was a carry for this team
1. they wouldnt have known about the fire and head to stop it from reg
2. they most likely wouldnt have been able to find the portal to take them there
3. the 3 headed fire that the dragons spit out, even if roxy made it she doesnt have enough mana for that and she cant chant it fast enough
also other people dont have as much mana as roxy even if they found someone with more rudeus's mana pool is just wild.
4. the info and book he brought with him, even with the right info it still took them 4 days to get out and in, so think about it without the info
If Rudeus didn't go seem like more than just Roxy would have died. It would have taken longer to map out the dungeon without the teleportation book. Then it would be near impossible to find the hidden circle to the hydra. And even with all that, Paul's group would have to find a way to defeat it. Plus, Rudy would have to deal with the stress of Sylphy's pregnancy and Norn possibly running away to get back to Paul. Like the Man god said, Rudy would regret if he left or if he stayed. Rudy could have lost more. I always say, "I'd rather blame myself than others for the outcomes in my life, because that means I made the decision instead of letting someone else make it for me."
You can't really blame Rudy anyway. Paul was hanging out death flags like candy during Halloween.
Its complicated, paul definitely dies because rudy arrives, and roxy dies if he doesnt but its more complicated if he doesnt.
Rudy is the only one that knows how to fight the hydra (fire) and only because of his knowledge from his previous life. Without him roxy doesnt make it, and without either of them they dont have reliable, accurate fire to cauterize the heads, or to interfere with the hydra even if they know its weakness which i dont think they would be able to figure out before duing.
I think they all die if they even make it to the hydra. But I also dont think they would ever find the hydra without rudy pointing out that the room looks the same as the teleporter where they arrive.
The more interesting thing to consider, is do they simply all die to the dungeon without rudy? We see paul is growing frustrated with the slow rescue of zenith, and they no longer have roxy. This means they have no magic users to traverse the dungeon at all. They also dont have the knowledge of the dungeon from the book that rudy brings along with him which made their progression both faster and safer.
Roxy was a mage and even she got caught up in a teleporter, how long before someone else or even the whole party does the same? I think its more likely that the whole party dies eventually if rudy doesnt come along.
The man-god only says that rudy will regret it if he goes, not that everything will turn out all right without him.
Passing by the fact that Roxy explained what the Hydra was and magic worked close range ... If Rudy was not there they would not know there was a hidden portal. They would have not gotten to the Hydra room and would kept wondering the Labyrinth until Paul mental health crumbled.
They wouldnt have gotten to the hydra in the first place if rudeus wasnt there searching for the secret stairs too
Rudy's demon eye according to the author has 2 weaknesses 1. he needs to look at the target and 2. he can only see the future movement of its target but only within his field of vision he can grasp . He was in melee range of the hydra , he couldnt grasp its full body.
The other multiverse theory here: since Zenith is probably in a veggie state from being in the crystal so long, coming to save her later (at the detriment of Roxy's death) doesn't change much in her case, but if rudy has the beast girls' tribe support maybe they tackle the hydra with more power and Paul doesn't die and can rehabilitate Zenith. Just a intriguing way to think about what the man-god was really trying to achiever
Imma be honest I still don't trust this mangod. He might give good advice but I think it's all to influence things into going a direction that will benefit him.
One small detail that was missed:
The man god said that he would regret going there and regret not going.
He then said the best option would be what was mentioned.
But either way it would be bad so he had to decide.
The problem is that he got confused or over confident the fight was almost over.
This was the crucial mistake that got Paul killed, two other important details:
- He was rusty after so much time at peace ( and not adventuring), so his senses dulled.
- He has a lot of power, but is a bit dumb in terms of applying his power, he's too straightforward.
Yes, he thinks of the scientific aspects that no one in that world knows, but it was obvious the difference in magic prowess between Roxy and him.
If Roxy had his mana pool she would be much deadlier than him.

You forgetting a crucial detail. Without Rudy, Paul and Co. wouldn't have even found The Boss room and straight out died! Due to the Traps, that the Labyrinth laid out for adventurers. Since Rudy did know the layout of the room from the Ruins, which Orsted kept secret about and shrouded them with magic.
It dishonors the whole team & take away their agency to put the blame on Rudy. I mean they all chose to be there and did their best to rescue Zenith. No one knows when they are going to die, but Paul, went out saving wife & child. Paul, would likely punch out anyone blaming Rudy, if he could:)

As far i can see, he not going might not mean roxy demise, without the book , they would need to try their luck and might end up where roxy is, they delayed the return because rudeus arrived, he is not experienced in dungeon diving and the book need to be studied.
Without the shortcut, he would not arrive in time and he would also not recognize the layout and they would not find the boss teleport on the first try. Also it seems only i find it amusing how the party says it is ghislane, a beast woman , who uses instincts to find the correct way and hitogami says to rudeus to marry one.
it was rudeus who gave it hope with burning the necks, without it they would need to return and plan out better. Could be interesting to have ruijerd and/or baudigadi to join in, since both should have experience dealing with it.
but what really bothers me is rudeus not using his trademark quagmire, they not trying to make the hydra move out its locations
In the novels they couldn’t even get back to the floor Roxy was on let alone be able to get to the bottom of the labyrinth. He was the deciding factor on then clearing and killing the hydra imo. He got staggered by the hydra and lost focus for a second trying to figure what it was doing and that was enough for the hydra to attack

I think the party wouldnt even found the hidden teleportation circle. So they wont fight the hydra. But whats bugging me is why does geese know from the first place that an adventurer saw zenith there in the labyrinth seeing in the anime the hidden teleportation circle were still hidden without any signs of people have entered?
The moral of this story for me is life is way too short to focus on regrets. I hope Rudy understands that even though his father passed, his presence allowed him to accomplish two things, First he was able to compleat his quest to find his wife and save her and second he was able to save his son's life. To protect one's family and friends is what a hero does, and even with all Paul's shortcomings, he is indeed a hero. The greatest weight in our choices is we only get one of countless many possible outcomes, unless you have done something truly vile regret is pointless.
What I love about this series is that it is neither kind nor cruel.

Roxy and the teleporters were in a separate area from the main path. Only Rudy would be crazy enough to bust through walls in order to find her. If Rudy had arrived a few second later, she would be dead.
Counter argument, all they had to do was go back to town pick up a few other people and/or more shield people and they would've been fine. If anything its Pauls fault for wanting to go back in there so soon. All Rudy did was provide what information he had and support for his family/dad. The only thing Rudy could've done different - MAYBE - was put up a shield/rock thing but from how its read, the thing is razer sharp so the chances of it helping would've been low anyways.
AS for what would;ve happen, sadly, his father would've not mad it either way. He was drunk on saving his wife and roxy at that time. He would've lost half the party and the dad either way along with Roxy. So more or less, they traded the dad for his mom and roxy - and all be told - that was an ok trade by paul. He didnt want his son to grow up without his mom nor dis daughters. So for him, he did the best option. Saved his son and the whole family. Over all - you can't ask from a man anything more important than that. His life.
They probably would have taken a couple more years to even make it to the 6 floor because they didn’t have the book that explains the dungeon till Rudy brought it to them. Also Rudy found the stairs leasing to the Hydra.
It was unlucky universal coincidence, It's Rudy's first dungeon run, meaning a massive lack of experience, and it had an SSS Boss. It's the same with any RPG/MMO dungeon/raid. Your 1st run is extremely different from your 2nd, which is extremely different from your 10th
That assumes they find the gate below the false ground. If they didn’t, Paul would have drank himself to death or committed suicide by monster. Zenith was the most important person to him. He essentially abandoned the rest of his family to save her.
