Mine did the same but destroyed the inner teeth on the 5th gear clutch cone and my retaining clip got beat up a little. Did you just replace the retainer clip or did you take other measures to prevent it from coming off again? Have you had any other problems with 5th gear or the counter shaft since this? Thanks!

The first 3 times I just replaced the clip. One universal clip, the next two were OEM. On the fourth failure I decided to look a little closer at what caused it, which can be seen here th-cam.com/video/NxGb27V3Vvo/w-d-xo.html
I haven't fixed the problem. I have bearing shims and new 5th gear idler bearings, but I don't have the 5th gear nut socket or a torque wrench to put it back at the 650ish ft lbs it's supposed to be. I don't drive the truck on long enough trips to justify it either, so i've been using 4th gear for the last year and 4,000 miles.

What happened when you lost the c clip

Instantly lost 5th gear while driving. Putting the shifter into the 5th location causes subtle hissing noise due to 5th gear being pushed against the rear case. Otherwise it feels like nothing is there and it does not pull.

Hate that it's 2 yrs later..
but I just realized (12/5/20) upon stop in driveway a..
best way to describe it is
An occasional "intermittent Ring/Ding/Cling , as she idles in neutral , if I shake side to side shifter as to "confirm" nuetral seems to "agitate" it again, unfortunately I only noticed when in spot for the night, so got the "oh damn! puckered arse" feeling and at least it's home 🤦🏼‍♂️ but any one point to a direction...is it safe still to where it won't scatter? (97 /DRW /NV/ 2WD 12V) Any guidance sure appreciated, thanks in advance. "Stop the Steal"
