    🐢 so far I’m loving the repti bark
    🐢 still needing suggestions for substrates!
    🐢 I could not wait to take out the moisture barrier bag, bc blue WOULD NOT stop pulling it up! Hahaha
    🐢 I think it turned out nicely!

      Lori’s Hartland try using plastic gloves when you clean blues cage so you don’t get the dirt and dust on your hands. I do it and it works great🐢🌴

      For a moisture barrier you should try coroplast. It’s what most people use for guinea pigs.

      I agree coroplast is awesome. We use it for our Russian tortoise. Our substrate is cococor and orchid bark. We put a couple gallons of water into the enclosure about once month (more as the weather becomes drier).

      For substrate, I would put a lawyer of sand in the bottom, potting soil in the middle and reptibark on the top but there is something I would mix with the potting soil that I forgot Ik it’s dusty though xD

    Lori , I love your channel! I got a Herman’s tortoise from a breeder in July. I have learned a lot about what I needed for my new hatchling. I did lots of research before getting Scooter. He / she is just adorable and has grown, he is about 5 months old now. His table is 4 ft. By 2 ft. I lined the table on the inside, the floor and sides with a vinyl waterproof contact paper. It works really well and keeps the wood dry when I mist it and I also have a fogger to keep the moisture up, while he is still a hatchling. I look forward to your videos about all your animals especially Blue.

    I am using (for a Russian) Zoo Med Excavator on part of the enclosure, and Reptile Prime for the rest of the enclosure. The excavator is great because you can remove the animal and use a steam cleaner to clean the excavator substrate after spot cleaning. Kills bacteria. Reptile Prime is better IMO than Eco Earth alone. I steam that as well. Best advice I found - the steam cleaner method.

    • @sug6188
      @sug6188 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I googled on your steam cleaner method for substrate but I really cant find anything.. could you please elaborate? Is it something that u can use regularly without replacing the substrate? thanks a lot!

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sug6188 Just an inexpensive steam cleaner I got off of Amazon. You just run it over the substrate after you spot clean. You will need to change substrate at some point, but not for quite a while.

    Hi Lori, I know this video is a couple years old. I was wondering how you felt about the Repti bark? I have a Russian Tortoise and he is currently in the coco coir .. but like you mentioned it's extremely dusty and we live in Michigan so he's inside for the cold months. I just recently bought the Repti bark (it's still in the bag) and I'm trying to determine if it'll be alright to use. I've gotten alot of slack on Facebook about getting it, so I'm not sure. When I first received him, that's what he was living in for many years before I got him. He doesn't eat his substrate, and he's extremely picky about his food, so I don't think it'll be a problem. But I'm researching before I open the bags. Thank you.

    • @fairlessdave1834
      @fairlessdave1834 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Crystal. Lori hasn't answered you yet but maybe I can help you. I have a 10 year old Hermans and I have always used plain soil mixed with sand for the substrate. I am about to change from soil for the same reason Lori says about eco earth, it is way too dusty. That being said, I'm surprised she is saying the eco earth is dusty. I use it for tree frogs and I see no dust at all. So, you find that to be dusty like she says too? That just surprises me. As far as Reptibark, I have never read anything good about it regarding tortoises but I can't really remember why. One thing I would not do is something Lori does in the video. For a Hermans or Russian, never add any water to the substrate. These tortoises come from arid climates where there is little to no humidity, so I'd keep it as dry as possible. So, if you want to change substrates try using plain topsoil with about a third sand. Good luck.

    Just a warning, I used eco earth for my tortoise and it was indeed very dusty but when I made the switch to Forest floor bedding he got one of the wood chips lodged in his little leg pit. We almost had to take him to the vet to get it removed it was so stuck. Now, my tortoise LOVES to dig, so that may have made him more prone to getting a chip stuck. I would just be careful and check his leg pits daily, and if he doesn’t dig he probably won’t get any chips stuck.
    I made the switch to Majestic Earth 100% organic sphagnum Pete moss and eco earth mixed together. I used 3/4 of the Majestic Earth to 1/4 Eco earth. ( I got the Majestic Earth from Lowe’s if you were wondering)

    I read turtles carry bacteria. Should be wearing gloves , as you clean? 😮
    In the far future, I am planning on get my first turtle.
    I heard rental places don't enforce booster vaccinations yearly on non mammal pets. Also I don't have fight with vets in our city with declawing like did with my rescue declaw cat.
    Yes, my city enforce only renters to booster vaccinate for rabies each year.
    I think turtle be best for me.
