I took the Tamron 70-180 2.8 for Sony E Mount and the Sony 70-200 2.8 G Master out for a spin to get some sample images. Due to the current circumstances, I was only able to capture a few running photos with a dog as well as some portraits. Normally I would have probably taken photos of a baseball game or some sort of sport, but this is the best I could do right now.
With that said, I think I got exactly what I needed to get to do a comparison, especially knowing the price difference.

I’d rather spend 1,200 and get basically the same quality images

“I prefer longer” hate when they tell that.

I am still holding out for the sigma to release their Sigma 70-200 2.8 for e-mount. IDK HOW MUCH LONGER I CAN WAIT

Your neighbor has beautiful eyes...wow... Like always, great review... Amateur here with A7iii, should I grab that Tamron 70-180 or wait and see what Sigma comes with, then compare and make decision. I am in no hurry. Maybe that Tamron is just so good, anything else won't matter.

I think the Tamron looked slightly sharper.

Tamron image quality honestly looks superb, in my experience with the G-master, it's rather soft at 200mm when you aren't within its sweet spot focus range. Even in these photos, the Tamron looks a bit better to me. Let's hope for a masterclass v2 for the G-master, hopefully of the same quality as the 135 1.8!

Same image quality ! More savings! Less heavy! I never take out my Sony70-200 out because of the weight! It’s just too much unless you use it on a tripod. So tamron all the way for sure!

I’m a sports shooter. I sold my Sony GM, and have this tamron on preorder. The 70-200 is never my “primary”, and I am usually shooting it one-handed on my second body (primary is on a monopod held with my other hand). It’s light weight will be welcomed. (I use only primes for indoor sports, btw.)

By the way, I really appreciate that you use both imperial and metric units in your videos! Keep up the good work.

The Tamron may in fact be one of the first examples where a Mirrorless camera setup finally sticks to its laurels of being lighter and smaller than equal DSLR setup. The fact that this doesn't require a tripod collar mount may be a first for a 2.8 in this range. Bravo Tamron, and I'm waiting for mine to finally arrive from Amazon.

I own both...the GM for the important shootings and the Tamron for travel...both are doing a fantastic job. Keep up your great content, Jared and greetings from Germany 🙋‍♂️

Very nice review! I would go with the Tamron for the much lighter weight and huge cost savings. Your sample photos clearly show the optical quality is totally on par in the real world with the Sony.

Going with the Tamron since I am trying to find away to afford the Sony mirrorless system on a tight budget. Thanks for deciding it for me. Excellent presentation. Comprehensive but not a chore to watch. Appreciate the information.

I'm definitely leaning towards the Tamron on this one. Thanks, this video has helped me think outside the box in terms of lens purchases.

no mention on how the camera bodies IBIS work with this lens. Thats the one thing I am interested in, can i shoot at 1/60 hand held, like I can with a 200mm lens with built in IS

I haven't noticed any focusing issues with my GM...in fact, I love using that lens on the rare occasion that it's appropriate for what I shoot. Its a really sharp lens.

I have used the Canon 70-200 ii, f/2.8 on the a7iii with no problems and yes it is heavy but does that make it a reason to switch to the tamrom
