STILL to this day cant believe UM lost to Penn state about 3 mos later. They had about triple the yardage but coughed the ball up 5 times, cant do that in a national title game even though you are clearly the better team. What a run they had in JJ's last 4 seasons there. Had UM not lost to UT in the 86 sugar, PSU in the 87 fiesta, and at ND in 88, they would have likely won 4 national titles in a row. Had Johnson just kicked the PAT at ND in 88 at worst the canes are co-champs that season. And of course had he stuck around in 89 he WOULD have won a 2nd national title. Such great run reminiscent of the run Nebraska had from 93-97.
Well on the other side, Oklahoma probably would have won three titles or more in the 80s if it weren't for the Hurricanes. One of many teams that had their title hopes destroyed by Miami.
The problem for Miami's '85 & '86 teams centered around our QB and discipline. These were talented teams, but they lacked the mental toughness to win the big game. It all started at QB where Vinny could be rattled unlike Kosar and Walsh. Plus, Mark Seelig was a liability as a placekicker.

We were too cocky coming into that game. The military style outfits and other nonsense was a little over the top. I give Penn State a lot of credit for being disciplined and playing their style of football. Their defense bent, but it didn’t break and that’s all they needed in the end.

I missed most of the 1st half of this game. Actually most of the 1st half lived up to the hype. However from the start of the 2nd half, OU definitely did not play smart football. OU's special teams put their team in very difficult situations. And those blunders helped Miami extend their lead from a 7-3 half time score to 21-3 early in the third quarter. It's a team game, but I can only imagine the anger and frustration from some of those OU players on the sidelines. UM was a very special program back in the day.
I played little league football with the two Oklahoma offensive linemen Anthony and Jon Phillips in Oak Ridge, TN. I'm not related to them but we were friends. I've got our little league football pictures.

I was at the game when Herschel Walker plowed over Bill Bates in his freshman year at Georgia. Herschel didn't play the first half of that game but when he entered the game in the second half of that game he introduced himself to the world of college football and the rest is history.

If i would have known it would all be gone, i'd would've took more time to really appreciate it and brought a camera.
Yes, both teams were loaded. Just more skill at the skill positions, and back then Big 8 wasn't especially familiar with the forward pass. Great Sooners team that just wasn't equipped to play from behind. UM's O-Line was superior that day.
You also have to consider that Johnson & Switzer went way back together as coaches. Jimmy worked with Barry at OU before he went to OSU. He was fully aware of the intricacies of “The Wishbone” offense & how to counter it defensively. Miami was the only defense in the country that could shut it down.

... I played against Oak Ridge in high school. We (Dobyns-Bennett) won a tight one in ‘86 10-7 in Oak Ridge in an absolute deluge of a rain storm.
