I've met Neal Adams a couple times, and the second time around he shared this story during a panel and gave me some great advice for my own comic illustration career. He's a great guy.
As an African-American I LOVE this. He made a character based on real black people not stereotypes of black people. As a college educated black man myself I am so tired of people thinking we ALL only fall into 2 categories: basketball playing rappers or, white-washed blacks like the 90's version of Carlton from " The Fresh Prince of Belair"
This is what Neil Gamian talked about the GL corps having lots of potential; people such Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Katma Tui,Arisa, John Stewart, etc each brings their special skills & perspectives to using the ring.
I remember being so confused and dissapointed as a kid when watching Green Lantern content and not finding John Stewart anywhere. He was my first Green lantern thanks to the series.
As a mixed dude Jon Stewart was my favorite green lantern growing up, and he was in the cartoons that were amazing so I still read him over Hal Jordan or guy Gardner
That's why I've always supported and loved stories that neal Adams had a hand in. Thank God for the redesign of the Pre-crisis Earth-One Batman suit. Long live the Legend Neal Adams
The wonderful thing about Green Lantern is anyone can be a Lantern since they are a Corp. You only need to overcome great fear to do so. It is why the GLs are my favorite part of DC. This sign “forced diversity” crap you hear these days. This is all natural and appropriate.
One thing l like about earth lantern is that they are all different ethnic and origin Hal is a causian American Guy is a red haired irish John is a African American Kyle is hispanic American Simon is arabic Jessica is latino woman They added a black woman is far sector They introduced a Asian boy too The only thing l find weird id is that all lanterns are located/live in America
Cool interview but the movie didn’t do bad because of Hal, it did bad because it wasn’t good. Doing Hal and John together in the next movie was a great choice.
This was a great video. Love the honesty and dedication he showed. Sometime people are so scared to offend that they end up creative offensive works. Well done!
In all fairness, the GL movie didn't die because they used Hal Jordan. It had plenty of other fatal problems built into it from the start that even John Stewart wouldn't have saved.
I think John Stewart is DC's first Black superhero. DC tried to introduce other black superheros like Black Lightning or Bumblebee but I don't think they were as successful as John Stewart and Cyborg.
He’s not lying. I was completely shocked the Green Lantern was white in the movie. That guy would later become an amazing Deadpool though.... eventually lol
@@xodus1914 nah the 3 l cited in my comment were the ealiest dc's popular black superhero and onntv John was dc's first black hero and gain in popularity thanks to the jl show Vixen was going to be the first black female hero to get her own comic, gain in popularity in animated show and got her own animated mini series Black ligtning is dc's first black major hero to have his own comic and he later got his own live action series.
lmfao holy shit, you have a bad history with Asians, you have Hals' friend who is Asian, and you call him , PIE FACE. lmfao hahahahahahaha. DEAD. holy shit I wish I had seen more of Neal Adams before his passing. What got me also was when he said, who is Guy Gardner , I don't read the comics , I was like WTF ! Neal Adams didn't hit the standards, he made the standards .
I don’t think it was the character that made the movie bad. Bad movie is bad movie… if they had done Parallax with John Stewart I’d still be coming out that movie dissatisfied and disappointed
Neal Adams stood his ground...Black heroes are simply heroes, as well...
milster no
@@johnathanclark79 lol cry racist cry
And Asian
As a Blackman this was the funniest conversation I've heard from a comic book artist 😂

Andrew Skinner he really is and he's very funny as well. I have tons of unused footage of some of the funniest things he's said to me.. lol

Rest in peace Neil Adams! The Best Batman artist and Green Arrow and Deadman!
This is what Neil Gamian talked about the GL corps having lots of potential; people such Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Katma Tui,Arisa, John Stewart, etc each brings their special skills & perspectives to using the ring.
I like the way this guy thinks. He was way ahead of his time, even back then.
Respect for Neal standing his ground! I've always look up to Green Lantern John Stewart and he is still my favorite lantern 💯💯💯#forevergreen
LOVE THIS! R.I.P. Neal Adams! You were the BEST in so many ways than your amazing art!

Surprised that coward Ethan van Sciver hasn't tried to sick his rabid comics gate dogs on neal for being a quote "SJW"

Just went back to this video after hearing the news. Rest In Peace Neal Adams.
These interviews are as interesting as the comics more often than anyone cares to admit. This IS fun to listen to, regardless of political views.
Neal Adams is one of my all-time favorite comic book creators. I have even more respect for him after knowing this. Thank you, Neal!
Him and Dennis O'Neill are in the same league as stan lee and jack Kirby as a legendary creative team in my opinion
I have the first appearance of John Stewart and Neal did a great job of designing the character...
As a mixed dude Jon Stewart was my favorite green lantern growing up, and he was in the cartoons that were amazing so I still read him over Hal Jordan or guy Gardner
Neal was very outspoken in the later years . . . it sounds like he always was behind the scenes.
This is a deep story.
Hugh LaRoche yes it’s one of my favorites

He was right my first exposure to dc was the justice league show. He was my first green green lantern and my favorite

Bzo office has nothing to do with quality you absolute clown
Rip neal one of the greatest artists in the industry probably the closest thing DC has to their own jack Kirby he will be missed
Bravo to you Mr. Adams!

Wonderful. Well done Neal Adams 👍🏽
@ 8:40 "I think they've been offended for about 50 years"
Umm...try 400.
There weren´t comics 400 years ago.
Give what happened 400 years ago was hella offensive...

Solid human, this guy.
Rip legend Idk Hal but I knew jhon from show was spot on.
I think John Stewart is DC's first Black superhero. DC tried to introduce other black superheros like Black Lightning or Bumblebee but I don't think they were as successful as John Stewart and Cyborg.
"What if I gave you an Asian Green Lantern?" -- And then in the 90's we got Kyle Rayner. ;)
Rayner's Mexican-Irish, dude,
They all look alike.
John Stewart is the GOATED green lantern
Neals a good guy

I won't lie, John Stewart is who I think of when I think Green Lantern then Kilowog!!!
Beautiful drawing. 🙂
And here we are now with a group of people that WOULD be 100% be offended by him saying "black people look like black people"
At the time john was a 70s blackploitation caricature
Good Guy!
Lincoln Washington?
Not me....not me. It was Julie.
John Stewart looks like Dion Sanders
My trinity of dc dark skin heroes ate john stewart, black ligtning and vixen
Nah, it's Nubia, Mr. Terrific and Icon/Val Zod
What about my boy cyborg

That there is a diss to trees there is no need to put them down there not stupid
All the stereotypes of others were under Jewish editors at National Periodical aka DC it later to be called.
And?
Adams was really into white self hatred. The more I hear about him since he died the less I like him.
Neil Adams likes the smell of his own farts.
