Good to see you all again! Hope you enjoyed watching the Olympics this year as much as I did. If anyone is interested in the historical accuracy/inaccuracy of Chariots of Fire, this is a decent place to start: th-cam.com/video/zox9Q_Ljtiw/w-d-xo.html
I have watched this movie since I was a little kid. It was one of the few VHS tapes that we had when I was growing up. This movie has always held a special place in my heart and has always shown me something different every time I have watched it through the seasons of life. I haven't seen it in years, but my mom gave me a copy for Christmas this past year and watching it through my older eyes was like watching it for the first time, but it means so much more with life experience behind you.
As a proud American who happens to also be an immigrant and minority, this movie holds a special place in my heart. There were so many times where I felt that Harold was putting voice to my own feelings - in some ways it's almost a movie about the immigrant experience disguised as a sports movie. And I loved the way he stands up for his coach as well. "I am an Englishman, first and last."
Outstanding - top shelf work. Only problem is that as much as this review (and the film) inspires me, it also highlights how much our culture has fallen. 😢
I've never cared about sports, but this essay helps me have some deeper appreciation for it. The guy who set the Olympic weightlifting record this year with a total of 404 kg (Nasar) is Bulgarian, and interviews with him giving glory to God and reciting the Psalms are going around. Quite a sight to behold.
I first saw this film upon release when I was in my late 20's. It has held special meaning and resonance throughout my life. Almost 30 years later, as a much older man approaching 70, on visiting the UK from the US, I walked the holy ground of Saint Andrew's beach. It was all there as it had been in the film. Virtually nothing had changed. Thank you for your literate, profound, and moving analysis! I am deeply touched by it.
I was a child when this film came out. It released with another film that year called "The Quest For Fire". For some reason I always had this vision in my mind of cave men running with torches along a beach in slow motion with the song from Chariots of Fire playing. I had this delusion that Chariots of Fire was a movie about cave men running with torches until I was almost in college.
A joy and a pleasure to hear the intelligent and heartfelt language that narrates this very well produced documentary. Thank you so much for your passion and heart in this.
Amazing analysis. The conversion by Harold in the 30s may unfortunately have had other more proximate causes, but refracted through the film the story of his life still a beautiful one.
Absolute masterpiece of an essay. I have watched and loved this movie since I was a child and have never heard the sentiments I felt put into words in such a beautiful and meaningful way.
The only sportsman I ever heard talking so much and so fervently about Christ before this video, was Ayrton Senna, a man who not only seeked to evolve himself on track (to the point where he’d be considered a “modern Samurai” by Honda engineers. But seeked to help underprivileged people in his own home. He is still the only sportsman I admire
I never saw this film before yesterday. Watched it just to have a point of reference for watching this analysis video. Good stuff (both the film and your analysis of it).
So speaking of films set in English history and deal with matters of faith … and also can be eerily timed with the present day … I would love to see your take on A Man for All Seasons.
Why wasn't Eric Liddell's heroic death in China mentioned. Surely this was as worthy an achievement that Harold's conversion? Apart from that a truly excellent video. Thank you.
Non Nobis Domine comes to mind. Are you going to look at all the movies in the Vatican list? + I enjoyed your philosophical essays as well, are you still interested in those? btw I'm not watching this essay since I haven't seen the movie...
Didn't even know there was a Vatican list... but I just looked it up. I may talk about some of those eventually, but I basically just go off of my own interest at the moment. Glad you enjoyed the more philosophical videos; I do too (!), but they aren't that popular, and for the time being I'm just trying to pay bills, as sad as that sounds. Thanks for stopping in to comment anyway. I appreciate you being here over the months-maybe years at this point...
@@EmpireoftheMindHey man its tough out there, Im working now and wondering how Im ever going to sustain a family... It must be from even before you started Kubrick lol. It's kind of crazy how my whole outlook on life has changed since then, no small part to you! ❤ from a European friend
The scene mentioned here 3:50 of the disfigured WW1 veterans helping the two freshman students with their luggage has been omitted in the Blu-Ray 30th Anniversary Edition. Maybe for its anti-war emotional impact? Pitiable. It's one of my favorite scenes of the movie. Only cowards or militarists would cut such a scene.
Yeaaaah Let's get this video to a lot of views in the first hour so that it gets love from youtube Algorithm bless this video which i liked even before watching it because it's that good Seriously, sometimes i end up pissed off because i can't like it again after watching it, fix that youtube Lots of words lots of engagement, yadda yadda
It's fantastic how this can be construed as a narrative of differences between Lucifer and Jesus. Harold forgets himself in aiming for something beyond him, whereas Eric is always mindful of honoring that something greater by being who he is at the cost of what he *could* be. It's the lesson of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, which Satan uses to project his own self-hatred on us. It's also the lesson of Jesus to the peoples of Israel, who claimed to be in God's favor without taking the always and as of then very present opportunity to *know* Him.
22:51 - It's not trivial at all. That's a very important part and I think it was one of the most prilliant scenes and moments of this brilliance of a film and character, which truly showed who is who and what they truly believe in.
One of the most ridiculous aspects of institutional Religion that a mythical god of the Hebrews dictates to everyone one they have a day of rest & it is a different ‘sabbath’ in Judaism & Christianity
OK, I get it! This channel is called Empire of the Mind, but actually it relates everything to Christianity! Concerning this movie, do Christians actually believe that Sunday is the Sabbath rather than The Lord's Day? How misguidedly or purposefully ignorant could any group of people be about the fundamentals of their own faith? If I'm wrong about this, please correct me!

I never watch the Olympics and from what I have heard I missed very little but cultural vandalism. And I see enough of that on a daily basis...
At last, a film analysis worthy of this beautiful story of faith and courage.

I love this movie. As a freshman in college, I began to truly seek and follow Jesus in part because of the movie. Thank for your analysis.
The algorithm really didn't like this video! But I still did. Congrats on getting to 100K subscribers!
Brilliant analysis and essay, symbolically shaking your hand. Finally someone did a great job on it, I was kinda waiting for this for decades.
Beautiful movie taken from a book titled, ‘The Flying Scotsman’, based on a real life human story.
Deserved every award it got.
Absolutely stellar.❤

So glad you enjoyed the video!
For years I've known of this film's existence but only after your essay have I now the desire to actually watch it for myself, thank you!
You will now regret it. Such a wonderful, one-of-a-kind film.
the best subjective pov on the film so far...in addition, the narration voice over fits the theme of the film.

Good stuff (both the film and your analysis of it).
Your analysis is extraordinary. Please do American Psycho (novel & movie), A Man for all Seasons, and Network. The internet needs this!
Network would be nice.
Very beautiful video. Thank you very much for your analysis.
Good video!

That's a film I've been meaning to see. Looks good.

There is so strong a desire in me I find myself crying. Like Eric Liddell I wish to run my life in a way to feel Gods pleasure.
Man, awesome video as always!
I disliked Chariots of Fire when it was released and now I am compelled to watch it again. Thank you.
Bravo. Great as usual.
Brilliant and illuminating analysis.
Beautiful ❤
Great analysis, makes me want to rewatch this film
Great video.
Thanks for sharing :)

Engagement comment
Truly excellent and insightful analysis, i greatly enjoyed it.
And to tgink that they took that to make a Mr Bean skit at the London Olympics...
I always liked Abrahams drive to win for personal reasons juxtaposed by the aristocratic team driven way of competing
Yeaaaah

The only movie I ever fallen asleep during in a theater.
I remember this being on HBO in the 80s and thinking it was a snooze fest
So Abrahams had gone from Judaism to Catholicism. From the frying pan into the fire, so to speak 😬

Great British 🇬🇧 values on show that sadly are dissipating everywhere I look
