The way I always had to lower the action on my acoustic guitars was to take out the saddle and sand in down. This always resulted in a big loss of tone and volume. I now have a Taylor 814 and I found a certified Taylor tech to shim the neck back slightly. I am really looking forward to seeing how this affects the tone and action. I am looking for a sweet spot and want maximum playability without sounding like a sitar.

I found the same thing with my guitar, what do you mean by shim? truss rod adjustment?

@@joshuabalraj Taylor use two thin pices of wood, shims, under and behind the neck, to adjust the neck angle. Choosing the right thicknesses of shims is what it's all about

Is that Brian guy with Fender now? Seems like I saw him at the 2018 NAMM Fender Acoustic booth.

Actually, most Taylor guitars' necks are not glued. They are bolted on. Now I am confused.

don"t go for what people says , test , play the guitars , than you make the decision .not every body like"s Martin not every body lik"s Taylor .

What is the magic spot for a perfect neck angle?????

    • @josephliptak
      @josephliptak 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

johntrik its different for each guitar and player. I have 6 Taylors and they all have different neck relief, string action, saddle height, and I set them to how they feel best for me, not what Taylor tells me specs should be.

Most acoustic guitars feel great at .08 thousands of an inch capo at the first fret and use a feeler gauge at the 6th fret while fretting the 12th fret with your right hand

Hi. I have a brand new dreadnought guitar and the bridge on the base part is a bit higher the the treble side. I shaved the bass part of the bridge to make it equal to the treble side. My question is since i shaves it off, using the straight edge from the neck, I see about 1mm of space between the bridge and the straight edge. Some videos says that is sould landat the top of the bridge, some says it should have a bit of space. Is that okay? Or should I replace the bridge? What is your thought about this?

Action in acoustics guitar have always been a pain in the @ss for me. I have a Taylor that I barely play because of the high action. And yes, I took the guitar to a tech but he told me that If he lowers the action more there is gonna be a tone loss but the action is still freaking high 🙄

Hi Guys, so what neck angle do you generally shoot for on a guitar and would you want to set it different on a acoustic vs. an electric or would that be more a preference in string action and so on? And this might be a lot to ask but would that get into the bolt on / set neck debate? Sorry, still learning and doing repairs not quite to the building phase but I am always looking for other luthiers insight. If it is quite a long topic I can ask via email. Thanks.

So, after putting a new shim in my big baby Taylor guitar and after tuning my strings, the neck moves down or up if I use more force and as I understood from the video that is okay right?

Sorry folks,, ,, but I have to disagree with a comment that was made here... If the neck was pitched up and the saddle and bridge were lowered to compensate for action ,, you would typically lose over all volume of the guitar ,,,NO power !!.. A well setup acoustic guitar needs to have a nice slope from the bridge down to the nut.. You'll get a more tight crisp feel with max volume.. If buzzing on the frets becomes an issue , that would typically be corrected using the truss rod adjustment to ensure the proper neck bow is set... Its all about physics kids,... Cheers

I hear what you are saying. When Bob made the comment about more power based on lower saddle , I had to do a double take. He is 180 degree wrong.
I own a couple of Taylor guitars and they are fundamentally great guitars. They were all improved on in my shop.

I guess the adjustment changed the scale of the guitar that makes difference in a already built guitar. but if you compensate from the very beginning, to make two guitar have equal string length, I assume what he said will make sense.

Just hate when people complain about how crappy a guitar is because it's too dry and action is messed up after owning for a few years. It's made from wood and take care of it especially if you spend big bucks on it.. You have to keep your guitars in a controlled climate, for any guitar no matter what type or cheap it is. Yes laminated guitars are more resistant to climate but still need to be in controlled environment because most have solid tops. I have a 1997 Yamaha DW-105C from day 1 new and still plays like the day i bought it. The tone has aged but not the condition it's in. Best controlled environment your guitar case with a humidifier but watch the humidity too much is bad to.. I don't treat my cheap Yamaha any different then my Taylor.

@ipmala It's all in your hands. It doesn't matter if you buy an expensive guitar or a cheap guitar it all comes down to your hands. If you can't make a $100 guitar sound good, then you're not going to make a $5000 guitar sound good.

I have a 2004 414 CE, I keep the humidity at the suggested %, no top bulge, no saddle raise, neck is straight, action too high and it plays like shit. My cheap acoustics play and sound much better.

You guys are annoying the way you explain things. Stay with the guitar and forget the rifle analogy. You are great guitar builders, but lousy teachers. I doubt that the fellow you're explaining to knows anything more than he did at the outset. He looked lost thru the whole explanation.

i just bought a lightly used 214ce and even with light gauge strings the action is horrendous. thank God the neck is fairly easy to adjust. I've only played electric guitars for 25 years because I've never found an acoustic that played worth a damn, at least not in my price range
