The unit width v move distance mechanic was in the Large Battles appendix of Arty Conliffe's, Shako (1st edition).
It's a mechanism I like, I owned shako, but never got into it.

Its a really workable set of rules that give a playable game but it does not feel or look like what I imagine a civil war battle to be.

A good idea, but I am not technological enough to edit together right now. I could do a series of short videos over a battle.....
