If you use fine vermiculite to cover you’ll likely have fewer issues with dirt shelf and cleaner greens. Soak your beet seeds for an hour, drain and rinse. You’ll likely have a much better grow and yield.
Nice... like the before and after of the product. Ill use your link to make my tru leaf orders.. you have inspired me to try growing beets again. They have been my albatross for years.
Adam Federer They can be difficult for sure. Harvesting is actually the hardest part because I do my best to make sure no seeds end up in the final product.
Thanks Corey, over the holidays, I grew my first Bull's Blood Beets and revisited Rainbow Swiss Chard in a split tray (cover half the tray with newspaper, seed, flip paper, seed). As they get to a fair height, I will brush the tops with my hand. This start to loosen the hulls. Over a couple of days the hulls are minimal. But mine did not like as nice as your crop. Great job Corey.
I’ve been using weight on top for germination and have been having problems but now you’ve got me thinking. So my question is, if you don’t stack do you literally just plant and put a upside down tray on top with nothing on the soil? Or do you use a tray inside with no weight?
Just an upside down tray used as a humidity dome. I usually will weight them down until I see some germination then cover with a upside down tray until they are all germinated.
Thanks for the great video,we had not previously heard about too much soil and the punnets we grew the beets in looked like a mini volcanic eruption with soil spurting up and the beets hanging tenaciously from the sides.(we had seen a previous video of yours with the beets)This explains our mistake and equips us to try again,,,Do you use the beets in salad mix or sell separately.
For beets, Do you have to get all the seed hulls off before putting into clamshells? I’m wondering if the seed hulls are too hard and might be a problem if a restaurant customer bites one. Or is it like broccoli seed hulls, which are very soft and not a problem?
Paul Giblin I make sure there are no beet seed hulls in the package. I might miss one occasionally but I try to remove them all. It takes me a long time to harvest beets sometimes.
Wow, 80gr for a 1020 ? That seems like some hefty overdensity. I'll have to try that on my next tray. Ive had great results oversowing broccoli, but ive never tried oversowing beet.
Corey, your videos are great. Fantastic channel. Question(not about amaranth). When you stack your trays, do you unstack everyday to mist with water?? I’ve been doing this and have been getting terrible germination due to seeds sticking to bottom trays and getting lifted up 2x a day.
THE D Yes you can use coco coir straight up or mix it with perlite, there are many options for mixing your own. Unfortunately I don’t have a specific blend I recommend at the moment.
Thanks for the info! When seed hulls do stay on, do you take take them off before harvest? Or do you cut your crop and then discard the beets with seeds still on them? Reason I ask is that when the hulls stay on my beets they are typically very difficult to remove without ripping the leaves off..
...lmbo..."A winning water".....hard laugh from a guy in Atlanta, a very good one though....great videos....my first pack of microgreens is Detroit dark red beets...wish me luck...
This is my first time trying beets. It was pretty much a flop. But some grew. Would you even bother giving these out for a sample? Trying to figure out how to add a picture. Guess you can’t
Forage Forage Just water in the bottom tray like any other Microgreen. About once every other day, I should have specified to bottom water in the video.
Ponderous Reader Here is a link to some high quality trays amzn.to/2W2SIO6 the ones in the video are from a friend in Australia Pepe Fassos. I spray my seeds with hydrogen peroxide to prevent mold when I plant. The best thing to do is keep a lot of air flow.
I want to see you grow this on your mats, without soil. I have tried many times.... I have given up trying with any seed that looks like that.... Chard, beets.... Can't get them to grow. Out of a tray I get about 15 seeds to germinate.
Hi Corey! I am about to make a purchase at true leaf market, is there a code or something I could input that will benefit you? Also, what would be the reason that you don’t use your lands soil? Why do you buy your soil? Thanks!
Fernando Saguier You can use my affiliate link in the description or this one www.pjtra.com/t/SENJTE1HTU5DR0xKS0ZJQ0dLSUdOSw thank you for wanting to help out. Soil from my land just isn’t ideal for Microgreens.
hi cory i sent you a photo about my radish 1/2 have come up and are already 1" high the other 1/2 are just seeds that have sprouted should i have covered them with soil i have had them under lights
john hopper It’s not the temperature because my grow area is also 65F. Maybe humidity, mine is less than 50%. Or seed density, I planted a lot heavier in this video than I normally do, time will tell if it works.
CoreysCave humidity is possible on rainy days it can be at 70-100 it's normally at around 50. Plant 20 seeds in a 10x10 in coco coir / pear lite. Lighting is unifun 40w grow light. I had this same issue over the summer outside is miracle growing plant mix and a 12 in pot. I managed to get 3 plants to grow in my raise bed large and taste leaves , although the beets themselves were very tiny long and a slender like a carrot.
p.s. I am in the UK so won't be able to get the seed delivery on patreon $10. Do you answer questions there? Thinking that would be worth the money to me just starting out
Great videos, only problem is the camera is only covering about half the tray it's hard to see exactly what you're doing. Otherwise great work man you should be proud of yourself.
@@CoreysCave Thanks for the clarification. I jumped the gun and didn't calculate by larger purchases. Glad to hear they're more affordable. They look great.
Beets can absolutely be a first time gardeners crop, this was mine, and i grew massive beets.
Fantastic info again, Corey. Thank you for sharing so freely

Good episode Corey

Hello nice video. Mine when they grow up they lie down. Do you know to tell me what should i do please?
Giorgos Georgiadis Laying down can be from too much water, too little water or too dense of a soil.
A very informative video. Thanks
Ronnie G.
Thank you!
Thanks Corey. i am looking forward to tryin beets
Hi Corey, thanks for the great video. Where in Australia did you say you got the trays from? I need to get some, thanks
These were from a friend in Australia, I don’t believe he ever sold them.
Thanks Corey, really informative - going to grab some and try next seed order.
RJ B You’re welcome and good luck!
Can you grow with just window light in the spring/summer times?
Absolutely

Thanks for another great video man!
Michael Graceffa Thank you!
You don't pre-soak the beet seeds? I'm finding conflicting information about pre-soaking beets...
adam basanta I don’t but many others do. Try both ways and see which one you like better
hi cory can you tell me about the baby greens how do you grow them to get them with big leaves plz
Ruth Green I grow them like Microgreens only I use a lot less seed.
Hi, do you know where I can get durable and affordable shallow trays?
tehere gibbs These are the best that I know of but affordable they are not amzn.to/2NGz9ZG but they will last forever.
Hi Corey my bulls blood grow with curly stems not straight up, any advice, I get a good crop just awkward to cut
Philip Shaw That is actually pretty typical of beets, mine are like that as well.
What mix are you using for a medium? thx
Ginger McLeod I like Promix, Sunshine mix, Black Gold and others. I like a fluffy well draining mix.
@@CoreysCave Me too! Thank You for getting back to me so quick!

What you have in media? Coco+perlite?

John Galvin Thanks man. Hell of a year for those Chiefs!
I'm assuming that you continued to provide water or a nutrient fluid from the bottom tray after the 4 to 5 days of darkness?
Forage Forage Just water in the bottom tray like any other Microgreen. About once every other day, I should have specified to bottom water in the video.

Is it because of nutrients?
Fernando Saguier Yes in part but mostly because the bagged soil I but is super fluffy with a lot more ingredients that just dirt.
Thanks Cory
