Yes, I want to walk with Him in the manner our Lord and Savior is pleasing to Him... yes, Christian means Christ like.... and through Him and by Him, we can do it. Help me, Lord, to please You... Always! Jesus wants us to make it more than we do... our pastor says that to us often.
Another great lesson as Paul encourages these believers who was in idolatry and immoral living to live a life pleasing to God. He desired them to become mature in their faith.
Amen,Preacher. Another Great lesson. As the song we sung as children said, "He's still working on me" I haven't gotten to what He wants me to be yet,but I will according to His Will....Love you Preacher
I love when you explain the meaning of the words and pronounce them in greek. Even if I have heard them before, it is a good refresher every time! Paul liked to say something about how he would not have us ignorant. Thanks for coming down to the level where everyone can understand. May the Lord Jesus bless you and encourage you to keep Repeting these truths until his glorious return! Thanks for sharing your God given time and talent for the Lord!
Watched TWICE and learned! Great lesson! And what a beautiful backdrop. Such a pretty church! I am growing and God is working in me! Praise the Lord! And your lessons are helping me quite a bit!
Great study today, Dr. Bagwell! "Furthermore"/λοιπόν/loipon/finally. This does not mean that Paul is about to conclude his letter. It does not mean that what follows is inferior to what has been said earlier. This probably indicates a transition or a change in emphasis. Paul is switching from the subject of doctrine to that of duty. We will learn how to perform, obey and enact what we have learned. Paul will divide most of his writings 50/50 into doctrine and duty. This would also be belief and behavior. If you believe right, then you will behave right. "Beseech"/ἐρωτάω/erōtaō/to ask. Paul is stating that he wants to ask them to do some things. He wants them to follow through on what they have learned in everyday behavior. Paul loves the verb "exhort". "Exhort"/παρακαλέω/parakaleō/to call right beside, encouragement. Paul is encouraging them to do these things. "By"/ἐν/en. "Received"/παραλαμβάνω/paralambanō/to accept something that has been given to you, to receive mentally and excitedly. Paul is being the teacher and minister here. "Ought"/δεῖ/dei/necessity, a must. This for a believer is a necessity and essential. We must walk and please God. "Walk"/περιπατέω/peripateō/to tread on, to stomp on. This is a well-worn path. This "walk" refers to every part of our walk in life, our daily walk. We should walk worthy of our vocation. These Thessalonians were saved out of a background of lewdness and immorality. Now they live lives of moral purity. This is a big change from what they used to be to what they are now. Every believer should have as their life goal to please God. "Please"/ἀρέσκω/areskō/to be excited, to go up and down. This means that we excite the Lord and put a smile on His face. If we are going to have the right testimony we must walk and to please God. "Abound"/περισσεύω/perisseuō/to be so full that you overflow. To be saturated plus some. The New Testament is laced and filled repititiously with patterns of spiritual growth. Psalm 119, Psalm 101, the names of the sons of Jacob, Gal. 5:22-23, 2 Peter 1, Romans 8:29. God wants us to be little Jesus Christ's when it comes to our lifestyles and behavior. James 1:4. The Bible is filled with these patterns of spiritual growth. Paul is leading up to this with the Thessalonian believers. There is a pattern of "things you know" in Thessalonians. Paul does not want to come across as a "know it all". This is a move of tact and diplomacy. See John 14:15. Jesus said if we love Him we will keep HIs commandments. Paul is not speaking here about the commandments of Moses or the philosophers but he is speaking of the commandments of Jesus. "Commandments"/παραγγελία/paraggelia/this term is used in a military sense. You do what you are told to do and do it with all your heart and soul. The normal word for commandments is "entole". This means the end goal or point of maturity. God's commandments help us to grow up and mature. God's commandments are not to hamper our liberty. They are there to help us grow into the person God wants us to be. "God's commandments are God's enablements." "By"/διά/dia/to come from the medium of. Paul says he is not the originator of the commandments but that they came from the Lord. See Acts 20:20. Paul said he kept back nothing from them that was profitable. He showed them and he taught them. Paul helped them to learn the great things of God. See Col. 1:10. See Rev. 3:4. We are to walk worthy of our Lord. See Gen. 5:24. Enoch walked with God and God took him to heaven. See John 8:29. Jesus said He always did the things that pleased the Father. See Romans 15:1. We are not to please ourselves as Christians. See Col. 1:10. We should walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing. See 1 Thess. 2:4. We should not please men, but we should please God. See Heb. 11:5-6. Enoch had a testimony that he pleased God. See Romans 1:17. God is revealed from "faith to faith". See John 1:16. Right now we can receive power, strength and love from God. Grace for grace. See Phil. 1:9. Paul prayed for the Philippians that their love may abound more and more. See Phil. 2:13. God works in them to do His good pleasure. Phenomenal study, Dr. Bagwell! Thank you so much for doing these. Such a blessing!
