    After watching the trouble with the back pocket zipper facing I just wanted to share a trick I use (and have yet to see anyone else do, surprisingly) when doing stubborn pieces like that. Instead of using cotton I'll use a piece of wovenfuse (or SF101, etc) with the zipper box carefully drawn on the glue side - sew with the glue side UP so that when it's flipped to the inside the glue is now face down. When the panel is pressed open and into shape for ironing it glues into place and won't shift around. For any quilters who use something like pellon's Wonder-Under it makes a decent homemade alternative to using up wovenfuse (etc). Well, hope you find this useful in any future projects where such pocket panels won't stay put.

    • @sewdat
      @sewdat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. I’ve also been doing these welt zippers. What I do is cut the whole entire piece as one pocket that folds in half it makes it so much easier instead of adding it to the small strip of zipper. Then you sew the zipper on and fold the pocket up and sew around! Much much easier🥰

    You’ve just inspired me to buy yet another Kandou pattern. I’ll be making this for my 5 year old Granddaughter who saw the larger backpack I made and instantly wanted one for herself “but not in birdies Gran, I’d like unicorns please” .. now to source some unicorn canvas. Thanks for such amazing ideas and for your detailed explanation on making these bags. I’d be so lost without your visual representation x

    Hi Jess. Thank you so much for everything you do. You just give joy in all your videos, you are an amazing person. I never felt so much admiration for a person. I admit our common passion for making bags draw me to you but it was your joy and vulnerability-being so honest and true- that made me become a true fan. If I lived in America I would have loved to work for you :) But who knows maybe one day we can collaborate even from UK to US :)

    This video was so extremely helpful. I bought the pattern and was so confused with how some of it was worded and wished there was a video to follow and was elated that you made one. I just finished making two of this backpack; one for the granddaughter (Minnie Mouse) and one for the grandson (Hot Wheels). I used cotton, but I took every piece and quilted each one, which made the backpacks very sturdy. Thank you for the tutorial. It helped me when I got stumped with the written pattern. Also, since I quilt, I always have extra binding in my stash. I used the binding and attached it as written in the pattern.

    Would you consider one day on doing a tutorial on how to cut out a pattern from printed pieces on fabric. Your pieces look perfect. When I try pinning a piece of pattern and cutting around it it looks like a wonky mess. Surely I'm missing something lol. And if I have to cut multiple pieces they all vary at then and and don't match, whick in turn makes sewing a biatch.

    So with the straps, I broke my machine with the thickness of the layers where the cotton webbing meets the backpack strap/fusible fleece (I made my own webbing substitute with canvas), I ended up using a rivet to keep the strap/stitching edges together, mostly because I’m on a deadline for my daughters birthday (this Wed). Love your channel!

    I love your tutorial and just finishing a bunch of Christmas presents made from your tutorials!! And they were big hits! I am making this one for my 5 year old grandson. My question is, I like how you used the waterproof canvas, I plan to do that. In the one you did for the video you used fusible fleece on the main panels instead of foam you said. Is that your preference...since using the waterproof canvas for the lining? Thanks in advance going to be sewing this in a couple weeks! ❤❤❤

    Hi Jess ! Beginner sewer here ! I’m looking to challenge myself a bit and your tutorial is so well explained I’m feeling confident. Quick question can I make this using my at home sewing machine ? Or how do I find out if I can or can’t? Or do you absolutely need the juki machines ? Thank you in advanced 😁😁

      i made a similar bag (i will post a comment with exact specifics of how i made it/what i did when i finish because i didn’t pay for this pattern but made my own) and i used generic 100% cotton for the outside and lining as well as a mid-weight fusible interfacing on the inside of the fancy fabric and a lightweight interfacing on the inside of the lining. i didn’t use a zipper foot or walking foot (though it would have been much easier if i had) and i used a generic singer needle (90) with my singer quantum dsx (a generic machine from i’m guessing the 90s?). i wasn’t paying attention at one point and accidentally sewed over the metal stopper part of a zipper and ended up needing more needles and i went with a denim heavy weight needle for the rest of the bag. in my experience, though, both needles worked. i too was worried my machine wouldn’t be able to handle the layers, but it’s done fine. but then again, i didn’t use waterproof canvas.

    Jess, do you think it would be especially challenging to use cork for the bottom gusset, front pocket flap and top handle?

    • @OklaRoots
      @OklaRoots  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I think you would be fine with those pieces. Let me know if you try it!

      Backpack came out great using the cork! I should have put some decovil light on the top gusset pieces to stabilize it more but it's cute nonetheless
