I just wanted to say that the content of this video is priceless! I just encountered it for my B2 exam, nearly 3 years ago, and now I am reviewing it again for my C1 Speaking, that I have today! Excellent video, not only is it useful to acquire some nice and extravagant vocabulary, but it is also great to remember some engaging grammar! [especially, piece and quiet, hustle and bustle, or keen on/opt for, would rather, ...]. Thank you Katerina! From Barcelona, Spain💖
Priceless tips and videos. The best I’ve seen on the TH-cam for this matter. Simple as that, the question-the answer. I would agree with the others, we need more of your videos and tips on CAE or any other subject concerning English. I became your fan since I had come across your channel. Thank you for your work.
I suppose she refeared to that language as boring, or basic level language, from the point of view of the examiners in the C1 advanced level speaking test. It should be boring for them hearing the same old phrases 12 times a day.... You might be surprised to find out that Cambridge has its own tools for measuring our English at each stage of learning, such as: www.englishprofile.org/wordlists/evp
The examples are certainly undoubtedly outstanding. Bare in mind, though, not to memorise any answer or else the examiners will alert you not to talk using speech you learnt by heart. I wish I have helped.
Please share your tips with us! Your videos are awesome)) Thanks a lot)) What's your next goal about English? Maybe CPE or TKT test? Btw do you teach English?))
Yes, I work as an English teacher, which is one of the reasons why I took the exam in the first place, it seems like nowadays a university degree isn’t enough. As for CPE and such, I’m not planning on it in the foreseeable future :)
You suggest some nice sentences but those sentences usually wouldn't come to my mind as an English learner. Also in my opinion if one uses a lot of idioms etc. it can easily come across as unnatural or studied by heart. So it would be more helpful if you presented ways to respond spontaneously without having to think of a sentence first rather than suggesting to learn sentence structures by heart.
The given examples are intentionally packed with complicated structures, since I wanted to show some ways of making your speech more "advanced". In real life you obviously wouldn't use ALL of them at once, but it would be nice to include a few whenever possible.
I know first-hand that if you are asked where are you from or where do you live, it wouldn't be a 100% appropriate answer start narrating if you like or don't like the place you're living in, or if it has some features or others, or if you prefer to be in the hustle and bustle of a big city... That's not fitting or suitable. Examiners from Cambridge told me... But to each your own.
when they ask "what hobbies dou you have?" don´t you are supposed to answer exactly what are your hobbies instead of saying in what you are interested on? or is that answer okay?. For me is a little confusing because a teacher told me that we must response what we are being asked, even if we do not have a precisely answer, we have to "lie."
Nicolas, if by answering exactly your teacher means just giving a list of activities, I'm not sure such an answer will get you a high score. The whole point is to prove that you can give an eloquent and complex answer to a simple question, so instead of saying: my hobbies are 1,2,3... you can and must use synonyms, after all, aren't interests closely related to hobbies?
You are completely right Katerina, i will use your tips for the speaking test that is going to be the next saturday. In 2 weeks i'll have use of english and reading test, and i have problems with transformations because there are always some phrasal verbs that i don't know. Now, i am reading the material that you attached to one of your videos, but i cannot memorise all the phrases, can you give an advice about it? Thank you very much, and greetings from Argentina.
You don't have to memorise ALL the phrases! Choose like 10 favourite expressions that you feel comfortable with. Saludos desde Rusia! Que te vaya bien el examen!
It's an example of inversion when we change the word order. Inversion is required in negative sentences beginning with the following negative adverbs and adverbial phrases: never; never before; not only...but also; not until; no sooner; at no time; on no account; under no circumstances. Inversion also takes place in sentences beginning with the following adverbs and adverbial phrases used in a negative sense: rarely; seldom; hardly; scarcely; little; only when; only after; only then...
Agnieszka Duda - Aga, inversion should not be overused in speaking, it’s extremely formal. However, as far as an academic writing is concerned, placing the inversion phrases Katerina mentioned above is considered very sophisticated and classy as well as you can count on extra points. All in all, It’s worth using the inversion in creating some formal pieces of writing like essays, articles, reports, business letters, etc. Peace ✌️
Hey Katerina and everyone! I came across a difficulty trying to answer those questions myself. I just post it here and hope someone would be able to help. When the examiner asks "where do you come from?" Is it the question of where i came from today or my nationality and a place of a berth? I was born in one country, but i live in another for a while and i'll probably take the exam in that country where i live... Don't know how to reply and not to look silly..
Hi Alyona! The question refers to your origins / residence. Don't worry, it's just a warm-up question, they don't really care that much about your biography :) You could say "I'm originally from ---- but I've been living in ---- for a few years now" followed by a couple of sentences about the city :)
It can be followed by a to infinitive or an ing form, the latter is used to talk about general preferences, as in "I would prefer being alone to being with the wrong person".
right. it can be used to express that you prefer some thing over the other, but if we have 'would' isn't it correct to use just a to infinitive form? as far as i understand "WOULD prefer doing" can be used in conditionals "If I had enough money I would prefer investing it to wasting it". i've never came across this structure, i mean 'would+prefer+ gerund'.
Katerina - as far as I know, WOULD PREFER shouldn’t be followed by GERUND, it’s an erroneous thinking. Only TO-infinitive must be used afterward. What’s more, ‘D PREFER is intended for more formal structures (e.g. academic writing). Thus, native speakers prefer using WOULD RATHER + bare-infinitive on their daily basis. Btw. Love your AmE-sound pronunciation. Awesome! Beside, you appear to be a grand person! Greetings from your western neighbor 🇵🇱 Peace!
Hahaha I like your response to what place would you like to visit?? It's so literary and overdone...It's a nice one to say in the test if you want to make a wise ass or high-flown of yourself
You can have the A level but your accent is utterly annoying. It is not needed to use the word pursue to prove the level of your language since this is totally improved by the fluency you have and such a lot of other factors which, trust me, you don't have. до свидания bella!

I am wonder why you wrote " Not only AM I fond of tennis.... ", instead of " Not only I AM fond of tennis" ? (you can find it at 6:57 sek.)

Isn't "I'd prefer" followed by a to infinitive?
It can be followed by a to infinitive or an ing form, the latter is used to talk about general preferences, as in "I would prefer being alone to being with the wrong person".

Katerina, nice to meet you! Where did you come from? (Request from China).
Hi ! I'm Ukrainian.
Where did you get your flawless native English accent?
It's far from flawless, but thanks for the flattery :) I just try to imitate, that's all. I have a good musical ear.
how many questions are going to be asked in part 1?
Top top top
Are you currently tutoring students? Could you help me with my speaking for CAE exam via Skype on a regular basis? I am from Moscow, Russia.
Hi, I'm afraid I can't help you with that, I have a lot of work as it is.

He's jealous, you're too good at English! I'm jealous of you as well, but I'm not a hater ;)
Wow, you suck.
